Title: Primula in window boxes
Post by: Gellytroch on April 26, 2019, 10:33:04 PM
Hi folks

I haven't posted for a good while but I thought I would share a couple of pics of my primulas in window boxes. A bit of a random selection here. All plants originally came from Susan Tindall's excellent Timpany Nursery in Spa, Co. Down.

Those are so lovely - such a good use of a windowsill!

Thanks Gail

That early splash of colour always gives me a lift in the Spring.

They're beautiful Dave.  Do you grow them under glass then move to the windowsill for display?  Very effective.

Hi Ashley,

No, I don't have a greenhouse and they stay on my east facing windowsills all year round. They're semi-plunged in sand and the sand and pots are topped with grit. I would plunge them deeper if my window boxes were bigger but I knocked those up from scrap packing wood about 6 years ago as it was all I had at the time and the plants seem to do ok like that.

All the best

Dave

Ashley,

I do have another 2 window boxes on another sill and I swap the plants round a bit at flowering time as they come into flower. Between the marginata's, pubescens' and the auriculas they give great colour from early March right into May.

Dave.

These are my 'change-out' boxes, if you know what I mean!

A lovely splash of colour, Dave.  I must start looking after my primulas better.

Primula not 'Blairside Yellow'.

An unnamed hybrid from Primula 'Rumbling Bridge Strain'

[attachimg=2]

I pricked out some self sown seedlings from pots neighbouring this plant.  (There were no other primulas nearby).  All the seedlings which have flowered are a reddish purple shade.

Really lovely and interesting plants Roma. You've inspired me to collect seed and grow some new plants myself!

Have a good growing year

Dave  :)

That yellow Rumbling Bridge hybrid looks as though it would be highly scented Roma?  Great leaf colour too!
