Title: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 01, 2019, 07:24:03 PM
We had 2 cloudy days so no new pictures were done and due return of some frost (tonight up to minus 9 is proposed) I worked with pictures.
Crocus adamioides was published by HKEP and it is distributed in NW Turkey
Crocus akdagensis is another HKEP species from Ak-dag in Turkey
Crocus alexandri is old favourite growing in Greek Macedonia near Mount Falakro where it blooms side by side with C. chrysanthus and both occasionally hybridize.
Here 2 pictures of such natural hybrids.

Crocus bifloriformis was published by HKEP from NW corner of Turkey in Asia but could be found in European part of Turkey, too
Crocus antherotes is one of my favourites from W coast of Turkey (near Bergamo) - corm got from Dirk.
Something similar is Crocus fauseri from very SW corner of Turkey
and then follow 2 unidentified/still unnamed gatherings from more to the East in Turkey
Crocus biflorus gr. S of Balikesir  and  another from Crocus biflorus gr. W of Lake Van

I'm very impressed with Crocus fauseri - and not  just because  I am so fond of Otto the man!

I'm very impressed with Crocus fauseri - and not  just because  I am so fond of Otto the man!
And the seeds are now “allowed” on BICON so can be imported - if someone has seeds to spare!

In this entry 4 various acquisitions of typical Crocus biflorus from Italy - localities in picture captions.
The last picture - still  unidentified, but most likely Crocus mawii, but could be concinnus, too - both are so similar that I most likely would not separate them...
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019

Now 2 species
The first 2 pictures are of exclusively beautiful Crocus bowlesianus, collected just at locus classicus (or close to it, because localities given by HKEP are very, very approximate and not always correct) but it completely respond with description
And last 3 represents 3 different acquisitions of Crocus caricus, the best of them comes from Labranda, but locality is almost (or completely) destroyed by invasion of wild boars, who plough up the mild slopes in search for crocus corms.

The first two pictures represents Crocus chrysanthus sensu lato from W of Turkey, the creamy plant is single between yellow ones which all has the brown flushed outside of flower segments.
On next picture is the smallest crocus in my collection. It is Crocus danfordiae sensu lato (Ruda-099) from E part of area
and then and in following two entries are selected forms of Crocus gembosii - numbers given at picture captions.

Again Crocus gembosii selections
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 02, 2019, 06:32:29 AM
The last entry with Crocus gembosii (may be some will come out later - still more than 300 shots must be sorted and labeled). On the 3rd picture is not SUNSPOT.
Today morning started with minus 7 C, but seem that day will be partly sunny, so the temperature in greenhouses will rise up and more pictures could be done again. Next days are offered around zero but cdloudy with some rain and snow. The last year at this date we had minus 20 C, and crocuses still were under cover.

Still 2 more from Gembos Yaila - the first is white with yellowish back of flower segments (last year it was more impressive)
Next is cross between Crocus gembosii with black anthers and Sunspot with black stigma.
Fo9llowing are two different acq1uisitions of Crocus ionopharinx - the first from mits authors, the next from my Turkish friend
The last in this entry - Crocus kartaldaghensis

Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019

Outside is very dark and it is snowing. The snow could and at midday when some sun is offered for few hours and again will come snowing. Not the best season to view crocuses. So I can continue to show plants from my collection.
Now I will start with Crocus mawii - both are plants received from Erich Pasche, and then one of my own selections which I regard as belonging to Crocus mawii. It is crocus of special attention for me as after publishing of my book, I got letter from H. Kerndorff that plant on front cover isn't C. mawii at all. He accused me in commercial ploy for selling of plants, what of course isn't true. So you can compare first two pictures got directly from one of author's and can see how they are different in some of key features and actually in everything but colour identical with mine. But albinos are very common in biflorus group.
Then follow Crocus mediotauricus got from Erich and my own gathering of Crocus salurdagensis.
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 03, 2019, 06:32:05 AM
In this entry 4 pictures of Crocus minutus separated by HKEP from Crocus danfordiae. The key feature is white stigma which in typical danfordiae is yellow to orange-yellow. First two are of colours mentioned in original description - white or blue. The third is of striped colour form - not known in danfordiae sensu lato before; and the fourth is yellow minutus - this year it formed very short stigma, hided deep between anthers and not so easy to observe in some flowers. The last picture shows Crocus randjeloviciorum published quite recently from Bulgaria and adjacent Serbia. Earlier it was regarded as very distant C. adamii, distributed only in Caucasus (Georgia and Armenia).
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 03, 2019, 06:54:15 AM
Again some puzzle of names. The plants on the first 4 pictures were collected very far from place where C. mysius occur according original description, although I didn't find there any crocus similar to C. mysius. The first two comes from Ulus Dag and were collected without flowers as well as those two from Goldag. When they bloomed I could identify them only as C. mysius. Only this blue one from Ulus Dag looks something different, so I applied epithet - mysius aff.
The last picture is of Crocus simavensis HKEP-0911, got directly from Erich.
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 03, 2019, 07:07:18 AM
Now 3 pictures of Crocus nubigena - the first is from Turkey, not far from locus classicus and following two from Lesbos Island, identical with Turkish by key features, but, of course something variable. Last two are Crocus pallidus from Northern Macedonia and Serbia, the last shows 8 flower segments, but it is not permanent.
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 03, 2019, 07:22:45 AM
Crocus seisumsiana is growing on Samos Island, looks something similar to nubigena, but invariably has only black connective, whilst in nubigena all anthers are black.
Crocus from Asar-dag is still not identified. It looks very similar to C. brickellii, but has twice as large flowers. I tend to regard it as C. lyciotauricus although description not match in everything, but only partly.
Crocus stridii here is pictured form with stippled back of petals and with yellow anthers - black anthers has apr. half of my plants. They all comes from Wallis collections, as I didn't succeed to find it at locus classicus in very long grass.
The last two are from Iran. The blue one was collected by Jim Archibald W from lake Urmiyeh where according HKEP is growing crocus close to C. roopiae. It was described from Kars province, now in Turkey (former Russia) and its description is very fragmentary, only one feature - absence of yellow in throat is mentioned. But this one has pale yellow throat. My own gathering from "W of lake Urmiyeh" has white flowers with yellow throat. What is the true C. roopiae - I don't know. Another gathering from near Kars has yellow throat, too.
The last picture is Crocus sanandajensis, recently published by HKEP, but collected by myself, too in Iran.
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019

The last entry for this morning.
The first shows you very unusual colour form of Crocus tauricus. It is not hybrid but wild collected plant during my last visit there shortly before Russia occupied Crimea.
Crocus thracicus was publish by Turkish botanists from Tu in Europe.
Crocus xanthosus and yataganensis were published by HKEP, xanthosus is my own gathering, yataganensis I got from Erich.
The last is mine Crocus zetterlundii from N Turkey, W and S from Lake Abant, collected at several localities but for the first time together with Henrik Zetterlund which name it is bearing.

We had very cold night. Temperature outside dropped down to minus 9 C. I still didn't visited greenhouse - I'm waiting for some rising up of temperature - today must be first and last sunny day this week. But still a lot of earlier pictures are not resized for Forum and I  continue showing of them one by other. Hope that no one was already included before...
The first is my pink alatavicus - now in full bloom.
Very beautiful is Crocus atrospermus. Here type gathering from HKEP.
Another from HKEP is Crocus babadagensis HKEP-9708, earlier known as white punctatus
Crocus baytopiorum is unforgettable for its unique flower colour
and last in this entry is unidentified Crocus biflorus group species from Alacbeli in Turkey, got from Jim Archibald
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019

Now two unnamed gatherings of biflorus group from Turkey - two pictures of each.
The first was collected by J. Person from Gothenburg SE from Avlan Golu in Turkey,
Next is mine gathering from Malatya province - very beautiful but still without name. Crocuses there are very difficult taxonomically - something different by DNA, but is it worth to regard them as different from neighbours?
And the last represents Crocus adamii group from Iran.

Yesterday we had some semi-sunny hours and more pictures were maid.
The first pair is the dark and the white forms of Crocus abantensis.
Crocus aerius JJJL-010 ortiginally comes from Zigana Pass.
Then white form of Crocus antalyensioides selected by Antoine Hoog
and Crocus Crocus antalyensis from Tuzla Beli

In this entry several of Crocus biflortus group gatherings which I still didn't identified.
The last from SE of Ardahan was received as C. roopiae and it comes from place where this species could grow, but according description roopiae hasn't yellow throat.
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 07, 2019, 04:44:05 PM
Still two more (3 pictures) unidentified samples from Turkey
Then C. brickellii - similar to danfordiae but note the stigma, which well overlaps anthers. In true danfordiae stigmatic branches this season mostly ends slightly over base of anthers and only rarely reach the middle of them.
And last in this entry - Crocus caelestis from HKEP
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019

As H. Kerrndorff put under doubt mine C. duncanii I this year repeatedly visited its locus classicus and few other spots where it was found before. Unfortunately we hadn't time to visit Crocus carpetanus wild populations, so for comparing here is used 2 gatherings of last in cultivation. You can easy note the difference in flower segment shape of both species. Flowers of carpetanus are round and "fat", whilst flower segments of C. duncanii are narrow and "slim".
Title: Re: Crocus March - 2019
Post by: Janis Ruksans on March 07, 2019, 05:13:51 PM
After blue, blue, blue now comes yellows
The first is typical true C. chrysanthus from locus classicus - Northern Macedonia. Note the stigma which very significantly overtops anthers.
In Greek Macedonia on Mt. Falakro growth another chrysanthus like crocus where stigma ends at tips of anthers. Unfortunately I haven't possibility to compare DNA of both.
On other side of Aegean Sea in Turkey all "chrysanthus like" crocuses has stigmatic branches hidden between anthers and they belongs to several different species, only few of them are recently published.
At first form from near Afyon in SW Turkey
And then two from yaila below Kaan gec in Central Turkey - the lighter was found as single individual between millions of deep yellow.

The first picture shows another pale yellow nutation of "C. chrysanthus" from Bozdag at W coast of Turkey.
Then another chrysanthus s.l. got from Norman Stevens
And then 2 hybrids - the first was grown up by me from seeds received from AGS as "artvinensis"and the second is hybrid raised by Augis Dambrauskas from Lithuania. It was named as 'Bronze Age'. Still saw it only in buds, flowers not yet opened.

I can't withstand temptation to show crocus named after me. Crocus ruksansii for the first time blooms so abundantly in my collection. I four times climbed up to top of mountains on Karpathos Island searching for this crocus and always returned with empty hands. Now my heart and leg conditions seem not more allows to make fifth attempt to see it blooming in wild. It was described by my Ukrainian friend Dima Zubov. It is something similar to C. nubigena, but well separable by several important features and flowers are the smallest between all former "nubigenas". Anther colour vary - mostly are with black, but sometimes are plain yellow, that individual with yellow backside of flower segments has yellow anthers, too. All flowers were pollinated and I hope for good seed crop.

Now 3 cultivars, all hybrids from so named Dutch "Crocus chrysanthus cultivars". The first, very beautiful 'Bronze Age'I got only last autumn, alas it turned virus infected, what you can see on flowers and was destroyed.
Next is mine 'Snow Crystall' - the best white ever seen by me
Then from Augis Dambrauskas 'Lemon Wine'- very nice
Cream coloured selection from Crocus gembosii
and unidentified species from Crocus biflorus gr. collected N of Golbasi, Tuirkey

Now 2 forms of Crocus concinnus - the first is mine selection, the next done by my Chech friend Vaclav Jošt
Then Crocus crewei
Light form of Crocus cyprius
And as last the single population of Crocus danfordiae where I observed together all 3 colours, although I'm still in some doubt, isn't there some unintentional mix made by mice in bulb shed. This spring I with great surprise found between mine, supposedly (and many years before being such) very clean stock of Bowles' White, few plants with blue flowers - typical wild Cretan: boxes with both were side by side in bulb shed.

I still continue showing some pictures of last week. They are arranged not by dates when pictures were taken but in alphabetical order and some today already finished blooming. Still new new and new flowers come out, but those I will picture next week.
The first is C. olivieri Albina found by Ibrahim. It well reproduces itself from seeds.
Then from reticulata group - C. orphei from Falakro mnt. in Greek Macedonia.
C. pallidus was collected in Serbia
Next I got as pseudonubigena from Norman Stevens, reported from Halkis Dag in Turkey, but is it correctly named, I still didn't checked. In this sample anthers are yellow.
The last could be true C. roopiae, although has pale yellowish colour in throat. It comes from Iran, W of lake Urmiye.

Now I start with C. antalyensis subsp. striatus. Is it worth of name, I can't judge. It is published from very small population of few hundred plants only.
Next is the best form of Crocus ruksansii, published by Dima Zubov.
Crocus salurdagensis JATU-047 was collected by me on Salur Dag, but published by HKEP
Next - Crocus sanandajensis 17IRS-081 - is another HKEP plant but in this case from Iran. Collected by my Czech friend, whilst I departed from group searching for another crocus from nr. Hamedan. Vaclav all corms donated to me. I was already almost finished with its description, when it was published by HKEP.
Crocus sarichinarensis I found and published from Sarichinar Dag, W from Antalya. Here its albino form - Alba

Three selections of Crocus tommasinianus.
Then Crocus tomoricus. It is published from Albania, but this was collected in Greece. At present I regard it as tomoricus, but could be new species related to C. veluchensis.
And last is C. vaclavii from Athos peninsula - Monk state in Greece, where it is growing just on seaside only few meters above see level, were are getting salt-water showers during strong storms.

Yesterday night greeted us with snowfall and in morning our nursery was painted white, but in greenhouse continued blooming. Richard Bloom from UK continued picturing of crocuses for AGS and RHS magazines. I maid few shots, too. On the first - two opposite colour forms of Crocus abantensis - very pale blue and very dark purple. Then Crocus scepusinensis leucostigma - pushing stigmas out of still closed flower bud, and the last is another white-stigma plant from Greece - regarded as form of C. veluchensis, but could be C. tomoricus if its area extends out of Albania into Greece.

Still few crocuses are blooming, although cvijicii only starts and pelistericus, jablanicensis just showed noses out of pots.
Still blooms hybrid ELDORADO raised by Augis Dambrauskas,
Crocus carpetanus
Crocus gembosii/concinnus hybrid selected by Vaclav Jošt (Czech Republic)
And spring blooming form of Crocus laevigatus from Cyclades.
Cultivar EGO - selected by Leonid Bondarenko from hybrids between C. reticulatus from Bessarabia and C. angustifolius from Crimea (Ukrainian teritory at present occupied by Russia) named by me as Crocus x leonidii.

Seems that those could be some of the last crocuses of this season
Crocus minimus Bavella - minimus (true, unhibridized always is the very last to flower)
and usually very late C. pelistericus.
Still some scardicus and x gotoburgensis are only coming out.
