Thanks!

Thanks Carsten for your nice compliments! :)

Kelly, I have Hepatica planted both in pots and in the ground here, and they require less maintenance in the ground. I like to make crosses, which is why I keep many in pots. Hard to cross two plants in the ground on opposite sides of the yard. :)

Can anyone tell me how to get hepaticas to release their pollen? I have lots of plants just begging to be pollinated but even if plants have functional stamens, the pollen won't seem to shed, even in the warm weather we have at present.
Title: Re: Hepatica 2019
Post by: Carsten on February 22, 2019, 03:10:54 PM
Dear Anne, I´ve been told that you can extract the pollen by cutting the fully developed stamens with a scalpel. The pollen then should poor out directly. That does not mean that the pollen is fertile in any case. Good luck!

Gunilla showed her beautiful dark blue Hepatica xschlyteri the other day. In 2015 I did a cross with Hepatica maxima, too. One with Hepatica nobilis 'Bavarian Blue' and one with Hepatica nobilis var. 'Touyama shigure' witch are both spotted cultivars. Unfortunately the flowers of the crosses are plain-colored. I wonder if the F2 cross could show the desired form? Any ideas?

Beautiful Hepatica's Carsten! Your F2 crossing looks very promising. You probably now that flowers still can change during the first years. So you need to be patient, but that makes it exciting.

I don't know but it is worth a try.  I would have thought that something of the blue from the spotted forms would show in the crosses but apparently not. I think your plain coloured are nice but a big spotted Hepatica x schlyteri would be spectacular  :).

By the way, Carsten, do you think your crosses are fertile? Most Hepatica x schlyteri are not.  Some of my seedlings from the cross between H.maxima and H. noiblis have lots of pollen and others have undeveloped stamens with no pollen at all. They may all be infertile, it is impossible to know until you have tried to pollinate them.

If you want a spotted cross and if your plants are fertile it may be better to back cross them with the spotted nobilis again. I am just speculating  ::).

There was also made a small garden with Hepatica japonica.

I love the small show garden with Hepatica and logs and mosses.

Carsten, you have really nice doubles and semidoubles and H.japonica seems to thrive outside in your garden, such big clumps!
H.nobilis 'Finnish Flag' is something which is not known in Finland. Last year I asked around and no-one had heard of it here, but it proves that it could be possible to find that kind of plants here in the nature. I have to keep on looking. :) Perhaps populations where there are both white and blue forms could  give that kind of spotted flowers? Although white ones are quite rare here, I know only one place in the wild with white ones.

Herman, thanks for your impressions of the show. Very aesthetic presentation!

Leena, the japonicas do work very well for me in the garden. But this is only the second winter outside and therefore you can´t be sure how it works in the long run. I lost one plant out of some 15 and those remaining developed much better then those in pots in the greenhouse.
'Finnish Flag' should be from Mikael Ahlgren from Finland. I got it from a generous forumist from Sweden and it is also called 'Finska Flaggan'. In my view spotted flowers are not a combination of the two colors, e.g. white and blue, but a mutation that often stays stable propagated by seed.

Gunilla, back crossing might be a good idea. Thank you! But in this case only 25% of maxima will remain in the cross.
There are fertile x schlyteri crosses but many also won´t work for further crossings. I will try to find the fertile ones between my seedlings  ;)

Title: Re: Hepatica 2019
Post by: Carsten on March 26, 2019, 04:24:52 PM
In my view it´s quite easy to satisfy the needs of Hepaticas. They are classic woodlanders of deciduous habitats, even survive in quite dense coniferouse forests. They often grow on slopes and seem to like good drainage. This in mind they will grow easily under hedges or deciduous shrubs and trees. They respond well for a frequent topping of leaf-mould. They will show their full beauty in a sunny spot in spring before the new foliage appears. After flowering they like to be shaded and can cope drought if fully established. They like humidity and are best untouched in their spot - self sowing is more likely as if you clean the area to frequently.
In pots give them a free draining compost and repot every year with the new roots starting to grow after the summer rest - Sep-Nov. I start to shade the greenhouse in February and finaly up to 70% in late March when the new foliage developes - so much earlier then outside.
John Massey of Ashwood Nurseries published a small leaflet of the culture of Hepaticas with is consicely and especially for the UK grower. He recommends a mix of equal parts of John Inns No. 2, bark or leaf-mould and perlite. My compost consists of equal parts of 'Einheitserde' (peat based standard mix), shredded and composted coniferous needles/branches and pumice. I use deep pots like those for Galanthus and add some drainage of pumice, lava and zeolite. (I know that this kind of drainage is controversial) Whatever mix you use, it must be free draining and don´t compress the compost to firmly when repoting. The buds should be above the compost but not too high as the new roots grow from the base of the bud every year. Older plants grown outside in a tidy garden often grow out of the ground as new organic matter is removed.
Maggi, if I was a Hepatica, your garden would be the right place for me  ;)

Thank you Carsten to putting together the requirements of Hepatica.  :) Most of it I remembered but I hadn't thought of that the new roots grow from the base of the bud every year, and I should also check the plants growing outside that they don't grow out of the ground. Though I don't tidy too much, usually I add more mulch every year, and I think I may have lost self sown seedlings to putting too much mulch on top of them/on top of the seeds. When the seedlings are bigger they are easier to see.

Yes, Joakim. That is my experience too.  H. transsilvanica 'Elison Spence' starts as a dark purple bud and then gets more light blue as it matures.

For some years I have grown a double Hepatica nobilis called 'White Eye' . The flowers have been all blue and I couldn't understand why it was called White Eye.  This year I know  :)

The transsilvanica seedlings from your seeds are doing very well :) they didn't flowered but next year for sure. They started to grow in the garage together with some japonica seedlings in late February and I had to use LED lights but it's been a good experience.

Before the natives start flowering I should post few pictures from my mini-collection of japonica and nobilis - all started from seeds received from a kind forumist 3 years ago. I am very happy not just because they flower and are beautiful, but also because I know now it is possible to grow and flower them well. Some flowered inside my frost free garage and few that were left in the cold frames outdoors are flowering now.

This year not many fluctuations.Spring started may be a week ago. These hepaticas are early. I have a few more still developing flower buds.
Unfortunately we can't grow H.japonica here. I am anxiously waiting for the Hepatica seeds I got from you to germinate..

Yes, that's what I knew Kris. Just that the transsilvanica made me think otherwise :)
The blue one with patterned leaves is a H. nobilis actually. It is nice to have one extra month of flowering Hepaticas! The LED lights are very efficient and economic, I highly recommend.

With patience the seeds will germinate. The H. acutiloba - pastel mix and the pure white are just starting to germinate outdoors and few other seeds samples I placed under lights are long germinated (not that I need more seedlings....).

Mine has never formed so tight clump, but it is also the first to flower here and spreads well.
Two H.japonicas which were flowering in my polytunnel. I'm going to plant these outside this week end now that the coldest nights seem to be over. These are so so pretty! Out my own seed grown H.japonicas are in bud and have survived outside now for four winters.
Also H.nobilis is already flowering in the warmest spots but in my woodland bed they are still in bud.

Yes, I will most surely plant some of the seedlings in the ground. Growing from seeds gives us this great opportunity to try/keep the plants in different locations.
I also do this with other species when I'm not that sure what conditions they like.

Can anyone tell me what are differences in H.nobilis and H.americana (how they look)?
Leena, it is not easy because there are a lot of different leave forms.
Hepatica nobilis the lobes are more heart-shaped

Hepatica americana (Hepatica nobilis var. obtusa) the lobes are more kidney-shaped.

Thank you Herman for the pictures of leaves! I have some H.americana seedlings waiting to be planted, and I was wondering if I plant them close to H.nobilis, am I going to identify them later or am I going to mix them up if I forget which one is which.. :)

Sorry I didn't see this Leena. I think I've posted few leaves images at one time.
Things are not that simple; leaves in Hepatica americana can vary greatly in size, lobes shape, pubescence (can look just like the nobilis Herman posted it).
I would say to plant them well labelled. Here's the description for H. americana from Flora of North America.

Thank you Gabriela and Maggi.
Hepaticas seem to be quite difficult to identify, but all are beautiful!
This May has been colder and so even today there are still some flowers in my H.nobilis (grown in woodland bed) and at the same time the earliest seed pods in the same plants are ripening any day now. I have put small acryl bags over the seed pods to help catch the seeds. :)

Our Dryad Nursery fresh seed list containing hepatica and galanthus seeds should be ready by this evening and will be sent to all those on our email list.

Some of the plants of Hepatica pubescens ex 'Hohobeni', planted last spring, have put up single flowers now.
I hope they still prepare themselves for the winter well. This is so pretty, I can already imagine what it would look like with lot of flowers. :)

Leena, it is very pretty. The one I have (maybe a sibling?) has also started to flower and I am very pleased with it  :).

Gunilla, it looks just the same.  :) Funny that these both had flowers already now, maybe it was the move in the spring.

Haven´t been online for a while.  Dear Leena und Gunilla, very nice to see that my seedlings do so well in the north.
Mine are more reasonable and wait for spring  ;)

Carsten, they are so nice! All other of my Hepaticas also wait for spring, but almost all H.pubescens- seedlings have tried to put up a flower in the autumn. I think it may be that when it started to rain in August after a very dry summer (and planted out in spring, though I had watered them), the plants think now is new spring. ::) Next year they may flower more in the right time  :). Now I'm hoping for a mild winter, and when the cold comes I will put dry oak leaves around the plants to protect them.

Carsten, they are lovely and I hope they will flower in spring also. I have no idea why Leena's and mine both flower at the same time out of season. Apparently something has triggered them to start early.

Most of my plants out in the garden are covered with leaves now, ready for the winter.  When I looked under the cover I found buds and flowers on several H. transsilvanica.  They are not as well behaved as yours  ;).

Shelagh, I think your plant is Hepatica japonica 'Hoho Beni' and not Hepatica pubescens 'Hohobeni'!
