Title: Narcissus in September 2018
Post by: fermi de Sousa on September 01, 2018, 11:47:20 AM
September is the official start of Spring in Australia and today is Daffodil Day!
In a raised bed in our garden this clump of 'Mitimoto' has slowly increased over the last few years.
It's another of Rod Barwick's "Little Detective" series
cheers

Some more from the garden:
1) "Decoy x Swagger" - one of Rod Barwick's "little breeders"
Now two which persist despite competition:
2) Narcissus cordubensis - how this came up through the impenetrable mass of the dwarf jasmine I don't know - it has seeded from a clump a few feet away!
3) A Div 6 which has a label somewhere under the mat of Dymondia! - I think it's one of BArwick's
cheers

PS Anne, when the minions are finished there you can send them down our way ;D

More daffs are coming into bloom
1) This came from our plant swap as Narcissus 'Charity May' but I'm not convinced!
2) Narcissus 'Bittern' 12 YO
3) one of the bulb beds in full bloom
4) A gift from a friend which she called "Springtime" but it isn't the same as the one on Daffseek! Most likely it's 'Quince', a sibling of 'Tête-à-tête'
cheers

We visited our friend Cathy today and I think she has the same daffodil - but she thought it was 'Tête-à-tête'! I think it's 'Quince'

1) "Campernelles" - Narcissus x odorus
2) a small Narcissus bulbocodium hybrid
3 & 4) 'Stocken' - a small jonquilla which we got from Glenbrook Bulb Farm in 2009 - according to Daffseek it's a catalogue name for a wild collected unnamed species related to N. wilkommii

Stocken must like your conditions, Fermi. Over (up) here it generally just produces a lot of leaves. Such pretty flowers too!

Hi Anne,
it must be the climate as I do nothing special for it.
I have a clump of something else which I've never manged to flower - lots of foliage and it multiplies. It was a bulb in a pot labelled "Narcissus cyclamenius" but i'm pretty sure it isn't! I've tried it in various spots but it may want cooler conditions!

While madly potting all the species today, it's nice to be reminded what is hiding in those tiny bulbs!
N provincialis (not easy - prone to basal rot)
N triandrus (keeping the same bulbs going is a challenge - keep sowing seeds!)
N calcicola ( surprisingly large bulbs)
N jacetanus (exotic frills)
N rupicola marvieri ( calling all workers..)

Here's a puzzle. If I sow seeds of some of my N watieri hybrids which are obviously hybrids eg they are yellow, how does what appears to be pure watieri turn up in the F2 and F3 generations?

Just luck I guess!

Isn't it simply that in the repeated crossing the  white gene  stands a reasonable chance of meeting another one and making white  seedlings?  Must say those in your photo look just like the straight species!

The ones in the photo are the straight species. In some cases all the seedlings look like watieri.

This is a seedling I raised from a hybrid called 'Romsey' 2YP (which was raised by a friend, Doug Bryce, who sadly died a few years ago) in 2004.
I no longer have the seed parent  and have no idea what the pollen parent was.
Initially flowered in 2014 and I recorded it as a 2WP but I now think it might be a jonquilla hybrid and so it should be a 7WP

Here in the Southern Hemisphere the cavalcade of daffs continue:
'Dovekie'
'Ruddy Nosey'
KB 10WY - probably the largest bulbocodium we've got!
The real 'Charity May'!
The unlabelled jonquil received with 'Charity May' is doing well!

Fermi
The 7W-YP is Jocelyn Newman.

The bulbocodium should have a longer number. We entered a 70mm bulbocodium that is to be called Dazzling Monty in the Canberra Show.

I must have been feeling really kindly to have supplied you with such a good NTT!! ;D

The 7W-YP is Jocelyn Newman.
I would've thought so, but it's twice the height! Could it just be due to different growing conditions?
The bulbocodium should have a longer number.
The bulbocodium is only labelled "KB10WY"because it came labelled as an 8WO! (see the thread from 2017).
I wonder if it's one of the ones you'd selected  for naming?
I must have been feeling really kindly to have supplied you with such a good NTT!! ;D
You've always been very generous! ;D

Fermi
If it is the biggest bulbocodium you grow you have done well at the end of the day.
As for Jocelyn Newman growing tall I suspect it is more to do with your growing conditions. Here it is usually fairly short-stemmed. What have you been feeding it with to get such extra height?

Hi Graham,
the other bulb I have of "Jocelyn Newman' came from you and is growing in another bed where it appears to be the normal height.
This one came as a dry bulb - one of 3 labelled 'Charity May' (the other 2 are true to name) from someone at our plant swap last December.
They were planted in a raised bed with other bulbs (mostly daffs) and they all appear to be growing normally.
It's a mystery to me - I'll wait to see if it is the same size next year
cheers

This one is a mystery.
After we had some earthworks done a few years ago this daffodil came up - presumably from well over 30cm down!
We did have daffs in the area before the earth-moving so presumed it was one we had missed when re-locating the dormant bulbs.
However I have no recollection of ever having had a "standard height" jonquil!
For the past 2 years it has produced 2-3 florets per stem and this year there are 2 flower stems, so it's actually multiplying.
Anyone have any idea what it might be?
cheers

1) Here's another look at the rather tall multi-headed yellow daff which I think is some sort of jonquil or has that in its breeding.
2 & 3) Narcissus 'Solveig's Song' originally raised by Rannweig Wallis and distributed in Australia by Marcus Harvey (though this came from a donor at our plant swap)

Hi Paul,
some nice seedlings there!

Here's a "standard" Div 3 daff called 'Calleen' which was raised in Australia in 1945. It's described as 3-W-Y but I'm not sure why it isn't 3 W-YR
