Title: Narcissus August 2017

Hi
Fermi, I thought I would post a few photos of some of our tiny daffodils. As you will see small is a relative concept.
Occasionally we overdo the short stem and the flower opens at ground level.
One of the problems with such small flowers is that the only way to know if they have a defect is to take a photo of it and blow it up on the computer.
Our MMM's are so small that someone with bad eyesight would probably not be able to see them. This presents a difficulty if the person is the show judge!!
I like Lawrence's viridiflorus seedlings and must get some off him at some stage. How do they hold up in the frost?

Hi
We have had an usually large number of very tiny seedlings flower this year. As you can see from the attached photos one of the ferals is a tiny miniature 1W-Y seedling. The seedling with the edge of the trumpet yellow is also quite unusual.

Hi Graham,
there are some real beauties there! I especially like the 1W-WWY ;D
Here are a few from you which are in flower now in the garden:
KB-M-6WP-2-15 (6YY so not quite as named!)
'Snook' clumping up nicely
KB-M-31-2000 x 1 (6YY);
KB-M-2YO-1-17 x 2 (a jonquilla type?)
cheers

HiFermi, there is a lot of  difference between a 6W-P and a 6Y-Y so expect some extras with next order. A lot of 2Y-O are jonquilla hybrids. It is nice to get two heads but usually it is only one. As you have too many heads I will give you a single headed one as well.

I think it is one of the sturdiest little jonquills I've grown, Graham, so I'm not disappointed in it.
Here are some pics of some daffs I got from Glenbrook:
Narcissus tazetta bertolinii;
Narcissus hispanicus
and a comparision between it and N. jacetanus

Hi Yann,
apparently it's sometimes listed as ssp aureus:

Hi
The narcissus gods have smiled on us. While I don't remember having used our N. asturiensis var. vasconicus as a seed parent where the pollen was from something else at some stage something white has to pollinated at least one of our N. asturiensis var. vasconicus because two of the flowers in our pot look like being very miniature whites with all the best attributes of N. asturiensis var. vasconicus. The two white seedlings are slightly taller.

Hi
The weather has limited hybridising activities as it has been very windy, wet and cold.
Here are some photos of the daffodils flowering in our gardens.

Hi
Weather has continued to be quite unfavourable. Very windy and cold. I have had to resort to doing my crosses in one of our tractor sheds.
As you can see from the photos the two seedlings from N asturiensis var vasconicus have turned white. They are very valuable for breeding.

Hi
We try and collect different species seed from different sources. The photos show that sometimes there is quite a difference between the plants. The Salmon seed has produced a very small plant and flower while the Archibald seed has produced a much larger plant and flower.
As you can see from the last two photos we have nice seedlings of our own breeding to use as seed parents in our miniature hybridising program.

Hi
The weather has been a bit warmer today and the wind was not as bad so I was able to do a bit of daffodil work.
Some species photos first.

Two very nice daff seedlings opened here in the last few days.
The miniature cyclamineus hopefully will grow out to be 6w-w.
This intermediate first time flowering sdl is Lady Diana x snipe. It is 56mm x 30 cm tall.

"SRGC-decorative-6w-w-intermediate-seedlings " are very cute with those very frilly trumpets.

Hi
Maggie, while they are not exhibition material they are very attractive so I will keep them. I suspect one of our species trumpets is the factor behind the trumpets.

Hi
Lots of miniatures and intermediates in flower now. The main beds of intermediates and standards have not started flowering yet.

Hi
The 2W-O and 2W-YYO seedlings are two highly coloured intermediates that will be used for breeding colour into our miniatures. They are flowering for the first time this year. The miniature 6Y-Y seedling is from our breeding down program. It is a very good seedling.

Hi
Final batch of photos. I have taken a lot of photos but my enthusiasm for editing is starting to wane and I am not even into main season yet!!

Hi
Lots of hybridising using the 2W-O and 2W-YYO pollen. We are in the fortunate position of having lots of miniature 1W-W and 6W-Y seedlings so hopefully something good will eventuate.
The split cup is of the form where parts of the cup disappear as well as split.

Hi
Some more photos.
The minute 1W-W seedling is flowering a little later than its parent N. asturiensis var. vasconicus which makes it far more valuable as it is close to show time.
