P. allionii 'V W Rollinson'
P allionii a seedling from Wharfedale Superb from Gerd Stopp
P. 'Lindum Prima'
-
Lovely Primula, David. Most of mine are outside, so a little way behind, but I have a couple of P. allionii under cover. A small plant of Anna Griffith is in flower now.
-
Thanks Matt, I expected to have a bit of a struggle with the Prims this year after all last Summers problems. Nice Anna Griffith.
-
Couple of Barnhaven Primula polyanthus from last May.
These have been hardy here (so far) while all Barnhaven Victorian polyanthus died the previous winter, which was very bad with very cold and hardly any snow in January.
'Daybreak'
'Paris 90', different colours from seeds, I love most the darkest blue. In the second picture the Corydalis on the left is C.panda, also survived that bad winter.
-
Good plants from Barnhaven.

'Lepus'
great display of plants Sue
Where did 'Lepus' come from as that is a really nice form and colour?
-
Hi Graeme
Lepus came from Aberconwy. I do love the allionii primulas but struggle to grow them unfortunately - even in well ventilated alpine house as soon as they get to a decent size a little bit of rot sets in. Just have to enjoy them as small plants!

Thanks Sue - I will hopefully be able to get one at Loughborough in a couple of weeks time
It can be very frustrating when you get a decent sized plant and you then loose half of it - however this time of year it is great to see the small ones flower
-
This picture is from last June, Primula sieboldii 'Manakoora' seed from Barnhaven. Most of the plants were white but this pale blue is really pretty and my favourite of them all.
-
Catching up with a few from the greenhouse:-
Primula allionii 'Neon'
P. a. 'Marjorie Wooster'
P. a. 'Lindisfarne'
P. a. 'Eureka'
-
Some Primula hybrids:-
Primula 'Joan Hughes' an auricula x Linda Pope cross
P. 'Stradbrook Charm' a marginata hybrid
P. 'Lindum Heavenly'
P. 'Clarence Elliott' an auricula x allionii cross
P. 'Wharfedale Superb'
-
... and to end.
Primula 'Maria Talbot'
P. 'Lindum Wedgewood'
There is a tale about the last one. It was given to me by David Hatchett and his wife Julie. David is well into his 80's now but still hale and hearty. One of his posts, prior to his retirement, was as Head Gardener at Cornwell Manor in the Cotswolds and indeed David wrote a book called Country House Garden, about a year in his work in the garden there (published by David and Charles 1983) and it's a very good read and you can pick it up very cheaply. During this time his wife, Julie, worked as a propagator for the famous Joe Elliott at the equally famous Broadwell Nursery. The plant was a self-sown seedling in one of Joe Elliott's plunges. So, for me, it has the label 'Primula JE ss sdlng.
-

P. 'Janet' a marginata hybrid

Primula 'Wharfedale Bluebell'
Primula 'Cowichan Red'
-
Primula hirsuta 'Dark Pink'
Primula rosea 'Grandiflora'

Nice set of Primulas Wim. I've tried Kusum Krishna (note the spelling!) a number a times under glass and failed every time. Perhaps it was telling to grow it outside?

Thanks for the correct, David. I've changed it in the original message. Over here it's been growing well outside in a trough for the last 3 years...Very slow though!
-
I like your Primulas, Wim, especially the ones with darker foliage (I have two plants grown from 'Jessica' seeds with also bronze foliage, but yellow flowers, which is a nice combination, too), and the blue one is stunning colour. :)

Thanks you, Leena...two more from today:
Primula 'Francesca'
en Primula 'Sneeuwwitje'

Primula 'Francesca'
Each to his own ;D
-
No, the green one is Primula 'Francisca', not Francesca. Found by the late Francisca Darts on a compost heap at a garden centre in suburban Vancouver, BC. She was a fabulous & generous plantswoman.
Of note Galanthus elwesii 'Rosemary Burnham' almost was named Francisca Darts until we caught the mistake and made a number of frantic phone calls. Thankfully John Grimshaw came to the rescue just in the nick of time. That wasn't yesterday...

I have also 'Francisca' (bought as 'Francesca'), it is very hardy Primula and survived winters when many Barnhaven Primulas have died in my garden.

Thanks John, over here it is sold everywhere as Francesca, I'll do some re-educating ;-) My label has been changed already to Francisca.

I've always wondered what Miss Piggy says about taste... ;D ;D :P

Primula auricula - I think this was from wild collected seed but this is the only one left after a few years and the label has long gone too
Next is a mystery - Bought from Kevock as 'Blairside Yellow' many years ago and the first time it has flowered for a long time
-
I get lots of self sown seedlings. Most are unremarkable but I do get an occasional star
A very floriferous white polyanthus. I like the smaller flowers.
A seedling with 'Dark Rosaleen' in its parentage. The flowers are paler and the foliage not as dark
Primula 'Dark Rosaleen'
-
Primula 'Tipperary Purple - an old Jack in the green type primrose
The plant on the right of this picture is a jack in the green seedling with bigger paler flowers
Primula 'Belarina Yellow'
-
Nice collection Roma. Why don't you think your x 'Blairside Yellow' is true? I think you've done well to get it to flower I've lost it many times.
-
David, I think the colour of not 'Blairside Yellow' is wrong. It's more of a mustard yellow compared to the real one and the bronze or purplish colour of the tube does not seem right. I must buy another 'Blairside Yellow' if I see it for sale to compare the flowers. It is a long time since I had the real one and I don't think I had them both in flower at the same time. I did mention to David Rankin (Kevock ) when I bought it that it looked different bit he had no explanation.
-
Hi Roma,
I'll email you a large file of my plant from 2014 if it's any use.
-
Roma, very nice primulas! :)
I didn't know that 'Dark Rosaleen' can set seeds, now I have to watch it carefully this year if I can get seeds from it. :)
-
Leena, this was a self sown seedling so 'Dark Rosaleen' may have been the pollen parent and not the seed one.

Roma, your plant certainly looks different to the one I have as 'Blairside Yellow'. Mine has nice clear yellow flowers, rather lighter than yours and the tube is concolorous with the petals. Also, I note the leaves on your plant are very definitely toothed at the margin, whereas in mine they are only slightly toothed. I will strike a couple of cuttings for you and bring them to the late bulb event.

Thank you. I don't get many self sown seedlings from primulas, but I will watch out for them.

Thank you Matt. I would like that. I'm afraid only two shoots on my plant so none to spare. It is recovering after being poorly (or neglected) for a few years. If you fancy anything else I grow just let me know.

Auricula 'Spring Meadows'
Another neglected primula which has not flowered for some years. The label has faded. Can anyone help with a name? I think it is a species.

Pity it clashes with the Aberdeen show. Not possible to be in two places at once :-\
-
Love the Auricula Theaters - only learned about them from a friends blog a few years ago.
I got this hybrid Primula from a batch of P. veris 'Sunset Shades' seedlings of two years ago. I'll take more pictures if the rain stops, but I'm excited about it.
