I was very happy to be able to visit the Harlow show yesterday and despite the heavy storm and the therefore very long and bumpy crossing :-\ it was more than worthwile. The attendance was very good indeed - the plants superb. Of course, it was also an opportunity to fill the trunk with new plants ;D
Here are some pix from the show - sorry if the quality is not always what it could be - but it was a cotinuous battle with shades - sunrays - flash or no flash - etc.... - I did my best to get the names right too - please let me know if anyone observes a mistake.
I hope you enjoy them ;)
Here they are :
Corydalis macrocentra
Corydalis oppositifolia
Crocus dalmaticus - were they put in the fridge by the exhibitor to hold them back ??
Cyclamen alpinum (first)
Cyclamen coum (second)
Cyclamen pseudibericum
Some stunning Dionysias :
Dionysia - a three pan entry
Dionysia - another three pan entry
Dionysia curviflora
Dionysia Göteborg - my personal favourite
-
despite the heavy storm and the therefore very long and bumpy crossing it was more than worthwhile.
It certainly was, Luc... and we are more than pleased you are sharing with us...... see the "Weather" page, though, to see what the storm did to Hans in Austria! :o.... you will feel sympathy with him, I think!
What great plants... a difficult task for the judges 8)
-
My God Maggi - it wasn't as bad here and on the Channel as Hans experienced (I hope all turns out well for him !!), but it was quite rough - the crossing from Calais to Dover took us abt 2 1/2 hrs instead of the usual 1.30 hrs but we survived ;D
Here's some more pix - and I agree Maggi, the judges were not to be envied having to decide on all these gems.
I'm a great admirer of these magicians that can grow Dinoysia's to perfection and to enormous sizes, so here's some more :
Dionysia 'Monika'
Dionysia Microphylla x 'Hannie'
Dionysia viscidula x freitagii
Dionysia xxxx (sorry missed the name)
Dionysia xxxx (sorry missed the name 2)
Draba molissima (why do we see so little of this great genus lately ???)
Eranthis 'Guinea Gold'
Fritillaria gibbosa
Fritillaria pudica - sorry a little blurry :(
-
Batch three.
I couldn't let our galantophile friends down... ;D
Galanthus plicatus "Sophie North"
Galanthus 'Trym'
Galanthus viridapice
Some hepaticas :
Hepatica 'Appleblossom'
Hepatica japonica
Hepatica japonica hybrid
Ipheion sellowianum (one of my favourites)
A three pan Narcissus entry (missed the names...)
Narcissus cyclamineus
Narcissus henriquesi (?)
That's it for the moment - I'll try and post some more tomorrow.
-
Beautiful Show Luc, I presume we all have the feeling being just beginners, seeing the plants.
I see Ipheion dialystemon has a new name!
Well that is good news isn't it?? >:( >:( ::) :'(
-
Luc
Thanks for sharing your visit to the Harlow show
I wonder how much the pot of Galanthus Trym is worth? 25x 40 GB Pounds each = £1000
Out of interest what is the most expensive plant ever at a show?
-
Luc, lovely pictures thanks for sharing the Show with us. I thought about you on Saturday morning and was glad I wasn't on a ferry.
By the way, I think the yellow Ipheion (I spelt it right this time Maggi) should be sellowianum. BUT it seems to be a crazy mixed up plant in any case see

Sorry about the last post folks, I hadn't appreciated that the Link was longer than the 'Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire'

I've corrected the name of the Ipheion David - thanks for letting me know, I hope the teachter didn't notice I had it wrong again :-\

Thanks for the edit Maggi, I just panicked. See, it really needs a good strong woman :o
-
Wonderful plants!! That Dionysia 'Monika' :o :o :o
One day I really have to be in England at the same time as a good flower show.
Chloë
(who was once on a 7 1/2 hour crossing from Boulogne to Folkestone ...)
-
Many thanks, Luc.
Great plants and great to see them from afar.
Paddy

I see Ipheion dialystemon has a new name!
Oh David, I just saw you have a new name too. ;D ;D ;D
There seems to be some anabaptist in the Forum?
-
:D I have a new name too!! :D :D
Chloë

Luc
Thank you for capturing some of the special plants at the Show. I managed only a very brief visit, looked for fellow Forumists, but did not spot any.
I am surprised that you did not take a photograph of another snowdrop that took my breath away. Like Trym it did not have an armed guard, but could have done. I am referring to a superb pot of 'Primrose Warburg' At least as many as Trym, but twice as lovely.
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone - I have some more pix left and try to post them later tonight. Watch this space David, some excellent Primula in there... ;D
I'm not a Galantophile Art, but I did spot 'Primrose Warburg' - I also took a picture, but alas it was too blurry.... :(
The Dionysias were absolutely stunning Chloë - truly wonders of nature.
As to the mysterious baptising that's been going on - I'm quite happy with mine, but Channel Hopping wasn't exactly the right expression for my Saturday's experience... ;D
-
Luc
I look forward to your further pictures.
Hope someone else took a photo of 'Primrose Warburg' as it was a really wonderful potful. Like you I am not a Galanthophile, but I did treat myself to a single bulb of this particlar snowdrop at the Show.
-
'Primrose Warburg' as it was a really wonderful potful. Like you I am not a Galanthophile, but I did treat myself to a single bulb of this particlar snowdrop at the Show.
Huh! :o
-
Here 's some more :
Orphys tenthredinifera (what a name ???)
Here's some Primulas :
Primula allionii 'Air'Edit : P. 'Pink Aire'
Primula allionii 'Gilderdale Glow' (not sure about this name ???) Edit:this plant previously Primula from Hartside, known as HNG12, renamed as 'Gilderdale Glow'
Primula allionii 'Mary Berry'
Primula moupiensis ssp moupiensis... catching some sunrays
Saxifraga.... (missed the name - but it was a real giant !)Edit It is indeed a giant... it is Saxifraga 'Tenerife' a wonderful dome in a 36cm pot! Shown by AGS stalwart, David Hoare, who was kind enough to get in touch to clue me in on these details. M
Obviously also some Teco's :
Tecophilaea cyanocrocus 'Leichtlinii'
Tecophilaea cyanocrocus 'Violacea'
Some well filled benches
-
To end this series, here's the Farrer medal winning entry :
Cyclamen libanoticum
Same in close- up (sorry for the blur)
The last one shows what accompanied me on my way home... ;D - I got some Pleione as well - but they're not on the pic.
It was a very worthwile Channel hop - despite the storm ;D
-
Super thread....many thanks Luc!
Good to see that you bought at least one Ranunculus!
-
The "right" one, too. ;D
-
I hope I can get it going...
-
Great pictures Luc will you be braving the North sea again anytime soon? It is Loughborough on Saturday and I intend to be there
As far as Ranunculus Lyalli is concerned I have one from the same source.. Perhaps I can find the right place for it this time :-\
-
Hi Luc, as usual lovely pictures. The first primula is, I think, Aire Mist-wish mine was as good as the clone on show!
-
Super pics....many thanks Luc!
-

I'd love to Ian - alas, can't make it as often as I'd like to... and Loughborough is yet a bit further away than Harlow... :-\
It's the pictures from Ian in New Zealand that made me go for Ranunculus Lyalli... New Zealanders (the plants I mean) are not all that easy out here.
I thought you'd be having a special interest in the Primulas David - some very good plants there ! Amazing how some people can grow them as perfect as that.
-
Super pics....many thanks Luc!
Glad you like them Franz !
-
The last one shows what accompanied me on my way home... ;D - I got some Pleione as well - but they're not on the pic.
Looks like Keith Lever did well out of you Luc! :D
Super to see the pics, thanks for showing them

See you there Ian (pub at lunchtime ???). Let's hope we have some plants to show.
-
Ah, Saturday pub lunch at a show. I think I miss that more than the shows! So it's polish the pots of some mediocre plants, pack the car, Loughborough here we come. Warning to those who can't come. The post show photographs will all be a funny colour due to the lighting in the hall.

Uh huh, the thought of a pub lunch (with a possible glass or two of amber liquid) has woken Martin up.
Of course my plants will definitely be mediocre but the pub lunch and associated banter will justify the early start and lack of red stickers! And then there's always Blackpool to look forward to ... (with possible Scots invasion, but it's an even year, so AGS rules apply, no corydalis or cyclamen in bulb classes ;D ;D ;D )
See you there.
-
See you there Diane - mine is a pint!!

Primula allionii 'Air' Edit : P. allionii 'Pink Aire'

I congratulated David on his lovely plant of Saxifraga 'Tenerife' and asked what size of pot it was in.....36cms is the upper size limit for pots in AGS shows.... this plant, which won a Farrer Medal for David a couple of years ago, is now living happily in one of Len Cheeseman's bespoke pots... a gift for this particular plant. I believe Len has given up making these fine pots... more's the pity, I say!
Many thanks to David for taking time to give me these useful details to enrich our "virtual" expereince of the show ! 8)
-
Thanks for enlightning me Maggi ! ;)
And have fun all those going to Loughborough next week-end ... I wouldn't have minded a pint either. ;D

Primula allionii 'Air' Edit : P. allionii 'Pink Aire'
Of course it is, I looked at my picture of 'Pink Aire' and still typed 'Aire Mist' :-[
-
Who was selling Eranthis 'Orange Glow'
-
Hi Mark,
Hythe alpines sold it - three 3 year old seedlings in a pot.
David,
I had doubts about different names after my return - but on this Primula I'm quite sure it just carried the label "Air"... ???
-
Luc maybe Air waves ?
-
No Ian - it was marked just "AIR"
Though I saw plenty of waves on the ferry.... ;D
-
There is I think, a variety P. 'Aire Waves' , but I am assured by David Hoare, whose plant this is, that it is 'Pink Aire' 8)
