Visited on 25 May to catch the scented Rhododendrons in flower.
The variety Roylmad has always been my favourite . A cross between Cinnabarinum roylii x Maddenii and with a beautiful scent.

The Edgeworthii "Logan Dream" has beautiful markings and the scent you associate with edgeworthii. However,it does not seem hardy even here with obvious damage to the foliage although this one seems to be in perfect condition.

Last few. The dalhousii seems to be rather sickly looking. There was a very large specimen of this in the walled garden but it finally died after years of cultivation. This one may do better if it is put in it's place

Visited the gardens today to catch up with the Maddenii group. Due to the warm weather they had flowered earlier than usual but we still managed to get a good sniff at them.
Photographically they do not make good subjects as all you see are white flowers but the scent makes all the difference. Pity there is no way of combining that with a picture.
Anyway the garden was in pristine condition. Only one complaint, the labeling is rather hit or miss. Some with no labels and one red lily labeled as Mec. Slieve Donnard.
The gunnera put on growth at a prodigious rate. The picture taken 3 weeks earlier gives an idea of the growth.

Crikey - could that Philesia magellanica be any bigger?
-
Maggi
I would estimate it at 8 feet x 3 feet.
