Beautiful. What a lovely start of Hepatica 2016.
Here H. transsilvanica 'Blumenstadt Erfurt' started to flower before Christmas. It is still flowering but today covered with a thin layer of snow.

Thank you! Now - plentiful Yukiwariso for the springtime dreams. :-*
-
We usually put a few Hepaticas on the Show Bench but they are coming much too fast this year. Here are 2 Hepatica japonicas no names because they were gifts from our friend Kimihiko.
First is a wonderful deep pinky mauve (doesn't show up very well in the sun (( shhhh. forget I mentioned that word it's the first time we have seen it for weeks)) with a silvery edge to the petals.
Second a wonderful double.
-
Thank you Tatsuo ;) how can they get so much amazing flowers... ? :D

Some hepatica seedlings are flowering for the first time.
-
My word! So many beautiful Hepoaticas - your seedlings are delightful Peppa - especially that dark red-wine one. You must be very pleased with those.
-
Wonderful seedlings Peppa, but like Maggi I think that last one really stands out :o
-
Really wonderful Hepaticas everyone! :) That red seedling is spectacular.
Mine are mostly our native H.nobilis, but this Hepatica 'Blue Eyes' flowered very nicely last year. I don't know if it is H.transsilvanica or a hybrid. Picture is from April 19th last year.
-
Just to say that I like them all -regardless of the colour and name :)
-
Hepatica 'Blue Eyes' is pretty, Leena!
Thanks for your nice comments! I was very surprised and extremely happy to find the red one; most of these came from the seed that one of my very generous SRGC forumee friends kindly sent to me a while ago. At that time, I had just started to get into Hepatica and I very much appreciate the chance to grow these.
-
Hepatica japonica yellow.
-
I like this light yellow ;)
-
A bit of change in colours is welcomed :) nice contrast with the anthers.
-
A yellow NIDAN-ZAKI is on an internet auction in Japan.
The bottom price is JPY 700,000 :o
Unfortunately the seller isn't available for export.

Michael's one looks much nicer.
-
And I thought Galanthus was expensive ...... ;)
I was amused to read on Google translation, right at the top:
'Nervous person please refrain from'
-
;D ;D Very sound advice!

That's a popular set phrase on web auctions in Japan.
But I don't think it works. You know mad people completely lack their insight ::)
;D ;D Very sound advice!
Why don't you put those words on the top of your website? ;D
-
Just to settle the nerves,I didn't pay anything for mine, it was a swap.

It's a beauty Michael. I thought you were seriously upping the anti ;)

Good idea. What is the Japanese for it?
-
It's only a joke. Sorry, Anne.

Two clones from a cross between H. transylvanica 'Lilacina' x pink japonica.
-
They look very promising! Hope they'll be as vigurous as transsilvanica.
-
Nice colour, Anne. Will they spread by rhizomes or stay compact, I wonder?
New to me this year is H. transsilvanica 'Pfauenauge'.
-
They are remaining compact. It would be easier to propagate if it were a spreader. :-\
-

A lovely large flowed hybrid, Anne. I'm interested in its leaves. Both have tri-lobed leaves, but japonica is smooth edged and transsylvanica is crenate.
New to me this year is H. transsilvanica 'Pfauenauge'.
A nice selection, Gunilla :)
-
I chose a marbled leaf form of japonica. Here is the leaf of clone 10. They are all quite similar.

I'm sure a lot of us were waiting for you to come out of the dark, John ;D You didn't disappoint us !
-
I was, too. They are just beautiful!!

After Tatsuo's Hepaticas from the Tokyo show I thought, this is 'as good as it gets' for Hepatica but I was wrong!
-
How old are your Hepatica John ? wonderful plants ;)
-
They vary from three to several years old.I rarely split them as I haven't been very successful in the past and have finished up losing the whole plant.
Any useful tips would be appreciated.
-
Back to the forum after a crazy week: Hepatica are in bloom :)
-
All lovely Yann. I shouldn't pick favourites but I like most the second one with the pink anthers.

The foliage on yamatutai x nobilis is wow! :o
-
I love everything that everybody posted!
Here is an H. nobilis that I got from my friend, I really like the picotee edge. And some nice H. japonica that I grew from seed that are flowering for the first time.
-
Congratulations on your seedlings, Peppa!
-
A lovely selection of seedlings. I'm tempted to try growing some more from seed when it becomes available.
-
All beautiful Peppa!
Growing Hepatica from seeds is the way to go!
-
They are all lovely, Peppa. I wish I could grow H. japonica. The variation is amazing.

Next lot, forgot to say met Glen Shapiro at the show very special.

Nothing so smart here - but at least the sun is out so we can enjoy them!
-
Fantastic day today at Plant Heritage Hepatica day 2016. Morning look around Glen Shapiro's (north Lancs AGS group member!) superb national collection of Hepatica before plant sales by Edrom nurseries and two thoroughly entertaining and wonderfully illustrated talks by John Massey of Ashwood nurseries. Cracking lunch and a lively Q&A session. Thoroughly spent up also!

John Massey is a fantastic speaker - not to mention a natural comedian - all ingredients for a great day.
-
So many of them! I wish I'd been there...Thanks for showing.

This is the plant I grow as Hepatica nobilis glabrata dwarf. My original plant came from AGS seed in 1986 (!) which had been donated by Severin Schlyter as Hepatica noblis glabrata dwarf. In all the last 30 years, it has never produced a seedling that wasn't identical to the parent, even when deliberately cross-pollinated. If Schlyter termed it a dwarf, I wonder if it is a small form of glabrata? Since I've never seen anyone else's, I don't know. Does anyone know how big a normal glabrata is? The second photo shows the glabrata (white) in front of a normal japonica to show scale.

Karl K. says "Hepatica nobilis var. glabrata
There are several varieties of the European species. The variety; glabra, which has white flowers and light foliage and there is no hair. It is smaller and more slowly growing than the species." http://www.kalle-k.dk/hepatica%20English.htm (http://www.kalle-k.dk/hepatica%20English.htm)
and Gunhild Poulsen grows it too ,she may be able to comment.

But is it small, Gerhard?
-
But is it small, Gerhard?
My H glabrata is small, Anne, similar in size to Ashwood's H nobilis Pygmy Group (they used to sell it as "Compact Strain"). I'm not at home at the moment but will take a picture next week.

H.nobilis semi double, new material from Tsech Republic found in the Sumava region by Lenka Holubcova,

How lovely, Chris - Mrs Holubec has the same good eye as her husband!
-
H.nobilis semi double, new material from Tsech Republic found in the Sumava region by Lenka Holubcova,
Wow! Maybe other special forms await to be discovered in the woods - this is so exciting!
-
Some of the Hepatica japonica seedlings I selected to keep from those sown in the past years...
-
Some more....
-
And the last one, with an unwelcome visitor >:(
-
Beautiful ones, Wim ;)
-
All are highly attractive Wim - congrats!
Not having this huge range of colours is the only thing I reproach to the American hepaticas.
-
We have our Hepatica glabrata from a seed portion from Severin Schlyther.
Severin has spent Hepatica glabrata in some of his own crosses, we got a portion seed when it entered into. this plant is sterile. :(
Glabrata is not very large. I wonder if Hepatica prickel is a cross of glabrata because it resembles the little.
-
Since Hepatica americana flowering is coming to an end I will show a few pictures taken over the past couple of weeks. First images show the common habitat they grow – maple-beech woods, in combination with Quercus, Carrya, Tilia…rarely pine and spruce, at least in NW Ontario. Usually on rocky, steep slopes. This gives a good hint about the cultivation needs; they need a lot of light during flowering; the trees leaf out precisely when the seeds start forming somewhere in mid May.
-
The previous year foliage is still beautiful on some specimens. In the second image is a form with the smallest leaves I've ever seen.
-
I won't show here my all thousand Hepatica pictures ;D but there is one, most interesting found this year - a H. americana 'diversiloba' type. I noticed the leaves in late fall-winter (best time to scout for good foliage) and the flowering was equally surprising - they are scented and unisexuate; very few with reduced anthers.
-
Their variety is lovely, Gabriela - and it's great to see the habitat.
H. americana - small leaf form- that is a very little fellow!
-

It is very cute - granted there is space for improvement of the flower colour. I found young seedlings in the same area with the same small leaf, so the trait is transmitted through seeds, at least in some percentage.
-
Two early season H. nobilis double findlings.
-
Beautiful - great finds!
