The last month of 2015 started with Narcissus cantabricus var. foliosus :)
-
Narcissus Hatsuyuki. Its one of the largest flower hoops I have :)
The third picture: a pot in the middle is N. cantabricus var. foliosus as posted yesterday, right is Hatsuyuki and left is Shirayukihime (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=13715.msg345403#msg345403).
My hand pollinated hybrid seeds from crossed with either side of the picture are now listed on the 69th SEED DISTRIBUTION (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange) as 2812 Shirayukihime x Hatsuyuki' cantab/rom hybrid ;)

I'm still waiting for activation of my password, so I'll apply for your seed ;D

Hoping you get some of them, Fermi! Good luck :)
I'm trying another pairing by using stored pollen from N. cantabricus var. petunioides with these flowers this season.
-
Narcissus ‘Lima's Green Goddess’ :) Its florets fade paler and become icy as the day go on.
And I noticed a kind of propitious sign :)
-
Wow! a double -header - that is good.
-
Just a few flowers out here.
First, one form of N. romieuxii mesatlanticus is just going over but I wanted to show you the size of the bloom!
Also, N. r. 'Hat', new from Rob Potterton this year and a good, almost petunioid form.
N. 'Lemon Flare' from Brian Duncan via Anne W - had to have this one after seeing Anne's photos last spring.
Also from Brian via Anne is Narcissus BD 03/53 - a hybrid between a Moroccan bulbocodium and hedraeanthus - clearly it's character owes more to the former, but the colour and perhaps that fluted/ruffled corona hints at an influence from the latter?
-
Hi Matt. Narcissus season has just arrived your bulb house :)
Your large flower one is interesting. Is it your own seedling?
Perhaps N. BD 03/53 has inherited its blooming season from hedraeanthus. N. bulbocodium are usually late bloomers I think.
I'll ask 'Lemon Flare' to Anne next summer :P

Very nice hydrid Tatsuo!

Narcissus papyraceus MS.427 Spain, Antequerra
It's a real Spanish sacred beauty :D 8) Please do not ask me its smell :-X
-
Narcissus romieuxii subsp. albidus var. zaianicus ‘Taiyo’ “taiyo” means “the sun” in Japanese.
I'm still not sure whether I should use “albidus”. According to a nursery owner I obtained this plant it’s an intense yellow form selected from zaianicus seedlings.

Thanks' Yann :)

Es un placer para ayudar, Tatsuo or should I say それは助けるために喜びです :o ( thankyou , google translate!)

Narcissus ‘Craigton Chorister’
I longed for this Scottish beauty :) :) :) Thanks again Ian and Maggi of Aberdeen :-*
-
Narcissus ‘Craigton Chorister’
Wow. That's much further ahead than here!
Your large flower one is interesting. Is it your own seedling?
Hi Tatsuo. This mesatlanticus originally came from Pottertons.
Cheers,
M

I am very fond of Narcissus 'Craigton Chorister' - and it gives great pleasure to see it giving others pleasure too. Thanks, YT!
-
Wow. That's much further ahead than here!
I thought you must see the flowers earlier than me. Growing same clone at different places is very interesting!
You are lucky to get good mesatlanticus, Matt ;)

Yes indeed, Maggi :) Sharing plants with friends is sharing joy with them.
-
Your Hatsuyuki is very fine, Tatsuo!

Narcisus papyraceus blooming after the autumn narcissi in the same land in Cádiz. Then a couple of pictures of the same species blooming in Sevilla near Alcalá de Guadaira. And finally the same species blooming in the garden, quite earlier than in the nature, by the way.
-
Very beautiful.
-
very nice Rafa, I always enjoy your photos of the plants in the wild
-
Thanks for sharing wild narcissus pictures, Rafa.
Those pictures are the best advices to grow them in our gardens or pots.

another papyraceus absolutely hardy, probably not described dwarft subsp, with very long and prostrated leaves.
Edit by Maggi : quote from post by Cyril in Feb. 2016 http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=14006.msg350732#msg350732 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=14006.msg350732#msg350732) " Rafa grows a similar compact plant from a collection from Tarragona, a port city in northeastern Spain’s Catalonia region, of a residual locality that has definitively disappeared (he thinks due climate change). It has long and prostrate leaves, not erect like in N. papyraceus subsp. papyraceus, also they are very wide at the beginning and thin at the end. He thinks it is a subsp. of N. papyraceus probably not described yet." that page has other forms shown too.

Very early flowers, at least 3-4 weeks compared to 2014
Narcissus albidus SF110 x bulbocodium praecox Moulay Brahim
Narcissus-albidus 8853

Beautiful pictures Rafa! So interesting to see N. papyraceus growing in the wild! Here is much used for indoors flowers (forced bulbs) in the winter.
Delightful, but nothing comparing with the way the look in their natural habitat.
-
I agree, it is fascinating to see N. papyraceus in nature, and flowering at the same time as outdoor bulbs here in Kent.
Given that my N. pachybolbos turned out to be N. papyraceus, I wonder if N. pachybolbos exists as a separate species, and if so, whether the true species is in cultivation.
Any thougts on this, Rafa, (and other experts)?
-
I don't know what is really N. pachybolbus... every time I have a bulb of it or every time I see a picture of It what I see is just a Narcissus papyraceus. Narcissus pachybolbus must have an eliptic or round section in the scape, not "acipitada" like N. papyraceus. This is why in Flora Iberica they have synonymized N. tortifolius as N. pachybolbus, the plant described by Durieu in Orán, Argelia seems to be the same as N. tortifolius.

That's very helpful.

I know it isn't the first but N. romieuxii JCA collection is flowering in a very dull Bury. It certainly brightened up our day.

With the warm temperatures narcissus are giving their best
Narcissus 'Don Stead'
Narcissus 'Atlas Gold' x albidus SF110
Narcissus romieuxii 'Craigton Clumper'
-
a few more, the gracilis Narcissus albidus occidentalis SF15
-
So many December flowers!
-
Some of mine are making me smile too. :)
Selected seedling from N.cantabricus x Atlas Gold
Narcissus albicans
Selected seedling ex Atlas Gold
-
Is your albicans also a selected form, Anne? Looks a handicraft by its finely chiselled flower!
And both yellows are lovely, too :)
-
It's from seed collected by Rafa.

Narcissus 'Don Stead' in flower today

a question for English growers - are Narcissus cantabricus, romieuxii, rupicola vars cold hardy? I'm planning to add to my frames to deal with the over crwding in the greenhouse and thinking about what might go out in the frames.
-
Christmas Day on the Uists has brought the first calm, dry and sunny day we've had in a long time. What better present than to be able to spend time in the bulb frame??
Having been on my wish list for YEARS I'm so pleased to finally have 'Cedric Morris' in my collection, with many thanks to a kind Forum friend. Flowering right on cue, this bloom has been out for over a week and still looking great. I'm not disappointed either, he's a stunner.
Also out are 'Camoro', 'Limey Lass' (with many more buds to come) and Narcissus romieuxii mesatlanticus, as Ian showed us recently, opening creamy and fading whiter.
-
very nice Matt - bit of sun in the background makes all that difference

They are all beautiful Matt, but Cedric Morris is something special (and my favorite Narcissus to).
In 2011 I got 3 bulbs from Beth Chatto garden, and they have multiplied to 15. Last year I chipped one of them resulting in 8 bulblets. They all survived their first year and most of them have 2 leaves now.

You are a lucky man, Matt 8) A healthy 'Cedric Morris' bulb is still on the top of my wish list.

Hello friends!
This year we have very good weather in southern Germany. I show my blooms of this month.
Narcissus romieuxii "Treble Chance"
-
Narcissus romieuxii ssp. romieuxii var. mesatlanticus.
Evolutionary transitions in floral color. They start out yellow-green, then to pale yellow and finally white. Just wonderful!
-
Comparison between Narcissus romieuxii ssp. romieuxii var. mesatlanticus and Narcissus romieuxii "Julia Jane"

Nice set Emilio never enough to watch those pretty narcissus.

Fine flowers, Emilio and Wim :)

So good to see them growing in your garden Wim.
I wish we could grow them outside here in Aberdeen I think we would need to get a real summer every year for them to thrive.
-
hi, any answers re my query #47? As in can these been grown in a covered frame in the UK? Or do they need to be in an Alpine House?
-

Sorry Mark too many distractions but better late than never.
They have some degree of hardiness especially if kept on the dry side during frosts however they will die if the frost is persistent and the potting mix freezes through and into the base of the bulb.
-
thanks Ian - I can't remember when we last had such a frost! A few years back I think. Not last year - I think as I'm usually here I'd be able to move them if we were in for a long freeze.
-
In my experience, I agree with Ian. In our last very bad winter 2010-11, most plunged pots were fine down to -7C, but unplunged ones died slowly as their roots were killed.
-
Two rolled-rim hoops in flower now in my covered trenches outside.

thanks Anne, my plants will be plunged. Even so as the plunge will be above the ground it could in theory freeze - but as said I'd have time to move them.

Aren't they curious looking! Are they foundlings or seedlings of your own making, Anne?

With the weather we've been having in recent years at the "Flemish Rivièra" I'm thinking of growing subtropical plants from now on ;) Just kidding...the last couple of summers have been quite warm and dry and they really like that...'Clanger' is the "better" one over here, had a first flush of flowers about a month ago at 20 cm above the soil and now a second flush about 10-15 cm above soil.

Not sure I like them at all.

LOL, maybe I am...luckily there's quite some water in between GB and Be, so I'm safe...unless...I guess you haven't learned to walk on water (yet) :P :)

But Wim, you know how David is always complaining about the bad weather where he lives - I think he may be better prepared that you think....
