The Mid-Anglia AGS Bulb Sale is always a popular event - a reminder here both of the date and the fact that all are welcome to attend!

Should anybody have forgotten, the sale takes place this afternoon.

I would really have loved to have gone. Last years was wonderful I got some really nice
erythroniums. Any photos or videos hint hint David?
What unusual purchases?

We are not long back from the Mid Anglia Bulb Sale, it was a lovely occasion in a great setting. Many forumists were there and it was good to see everyone. Others might wonder why we make such a fuss about it, galanthophiles would understand as there were hard to find snowdrops in the auction (amongst other things including two loungers). Here was your chance to pick up 'Green Tear', 'Carolyn Elwes', or 'Castle Green Dragon' to name just three. The members bulb stall had still more bargains (I came away with Erythronium 'Winifred Lorraine' which Val Bourne then told me was one of the best in her garden ;D), and there were more sellers there including the guest nursery - Sarah and Julian Sutton from Desirable Plants, Matt from Riverside Bulbs and Richard Hobbs and Sally. To add to all that it was free admission which included tea and cake. Now I need to pot some more snowdrops (now there's a surprise) ::)
-
Was a great couple of hours , well worth the drive (not that I was driving today ) . Was nice to see friends out of their winter woolies . Should have got there a bit earlier and taken more money !
-
I'm merging the two pages with this subject. ;)
-
Thanks Maggi :-*

I think David has a few which will find their way here, he had his long lens so got some good candid shots ;)

And we are now finally home,a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon,if a trifle expensive ;D ;D,I even had to raid Jans purse, great to see so many forumists there, quite a sociable event, helps make the autumn/winter days pass faster before we all meet again,I did buy a couple of snowdrops in the auction, some erythroniums and Jan added a few more nerines and colchicums, tulips for the garden,so pleased that we were finally able to make this event, after our failed attempts over the last two years
Not forgetting a wonderful gift from a forumist
-
It was a very nice day at the mid anglia bulb sale!
I have met many forum members, meet lots of new people and got a lot of new stunning plants :D :D
-
It was a Colchicum's harvest ;)

As Brian said I had a nice long lens on yesterday so here are a few pictures from the sale.
1. The buying frenzy has started except for one who can't decide whether to buy or keep his cash.
2. Jo Hynes (centre) talking to Sharon White (left) and Val Bourne (right). A nice pic Val?
3. The Riverside Plants stall.
4. Jane Leeds.
5. Cliff Curtis (centre)
-
Five more:
1. Joan Curtis (right) talking to Margaret MacLennan.
2. Wol Staines.
3. David MacLennan.
4. Sharon White.
5. Margaret MacLennan.
-
The third five:
1. Emma Thick
2. Wol and Sue Staines and Emma Thick.
3. Brian Ellis and Jan Whight.
4. And then it rained. From left Sharon White, Cliff Curtis (back to camera), Carole Smith talking to Mark Smythe and
Chas Whight (head only between Mark and man in bule shirt).
5. Christine Mole (snowdrop nails in February) talking to Margaret MacLennan.
-
The final five:
1. Rod and Jane Leeds.
2. Ann Broscombe. Ann likes Clematis and had her nails painted, each with a different Clematis, for a convention in Europe.
Pictures 3, 4 and 5 are her painted nails.

... except for one who can't decide whether to buy or keep his cash.
I did better than that! I had brought along a few bulbs for sale (on a 50:50 basis) and the early snowdrop bulbs that are the focus of my attention at present (and that I don't already have) were thin on the ground. So I achieved the unheard-of feat of going away with more cash than I arrived with! This year only!
-
Glad to hear it was sunny for most of the time - so nice to see the galanthophiles without 150 layers of woolies and waterproofs !!
-
5. Cliff Curtis (centre)
The gentleman to the left of Cliff Curtis in IMG_5315w was buying snowdrops so enthusiastically that I wondered who he was. I take it that you don't know either, David?
-

Well believe it or not so did I! The ones I was looking for on the sales table had already been sold (someone must have been quick off the mark) so I had very few purchases and someone wanted a particular snowdrop from me so I was in the same monetary position as you. No we don't recognize this gentleman and his wife? either. There are lots of people we recognize by sight but just can't put names too!

The couple in question are Doreen & David Jones.
-
Thanks, Mike. It was just idle curiosity on my part but one generally comes to recognise ones fellow galanthophiles if they come along to events like this one. I'm really terrible with faces myself but I asked a couple of other people there and they did not know/recognise the Joneses either.
-
...they did not know/recognise the Joneses either.
But were able to keep up with them?
;D
cheers

Never been so embarrassed!! I kept throwing bulbs in to box I was handed at the MAAGS stand. Dandered around and bought here and there. Went back to pay at MAAGS ... £500!! Had to quickly decide what I really wanted from not

Not sure why that's upside down! He wasn't at the time .
-
I expect the experience was quite "upsetting" Emma! Have fixed it!
Is that Ray Drew looking uncharacteristically dour?
-
yeah he's looking a bit angry. He had to count it, I removed items, he had to count it, I removed items ...
-
They hold an auction an hour after the sale has started. I just found this picture on my camera.
-
I found it strange that Jane Leeds and Wol & Sue were bidding for snowdrops
-
Think they were just bumping up the price to make the most for the ags
-
You can see the events programme of the Mid-Anglia AGS Group here: http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/groups/Mid-Anglia/programme/ (http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/groups/Mid-Anglia/programme/) . They get some good speakers, some of whom travel long distances. Wim Boens spoke in January and SRGS's own Ian Young in March. They manage to do this because of the funds raised from the Bulb Sale. Actually, I should say 'we' because I joined the Group earlier this year.
In the auction I think sometimes people bid to push-up the price if they think an item seems to be going too cheaply but the risk of that is that you end-up buying it. And there must be just a few snowdrops that the Leedses or the Staineses do not possess.
-

I would have thought the most modest thing to say was 'the group'. Personally I always talk of the groups I belong to as they are not mine but belong to the membership as a whole. Particularly pertinent I would suggest if one is a new member.
-
Sorry, David, I'm missing the point you are trying to make. Since I was commenting on the Mid-Anglia AGS (and have been to their Bulb Sale possibly every year since 2012) I thought I should mention that I'm no longer a disinterested party. No modesty or immodesty intended, just a statement of fact.
-
...............Personally I always talk of the groups I belong to as they are not mine but belong to the membership as a whole.
Doesn't your first word illustrate the point? :P
