Hi
Only two photos today although there are many more daffodils flowering at the moment. We have extended the flowering season well into October by our hybridising.

Our season is rapidly coming to an end now as we have a burst of hot weather along with hot winds today. I should have done some hybridising but have run out of energy. With the hot weather it has been necessary to water.

Hi
Final lot of photos. It is time to fade off into the sunset for another year.

Hi Graham,
we're about done with the spring daffs as well, here - just a few more to go.
Today the first flowers on this tazetta hybrid opened.
It's supposed to be G.Mitsch & the Havens' hybrid between 'Matador' and N. jonquilla, called 'Sparkling Tarts' an 8YO, though it looks more like an 8 WY at this stage - perhaps it darkens with age. On Daffseek they show them looking white-yellow but also like yellow-orange!
cheers

Now to hope that your hybridising work this season pays dividends, Graham!

Maggie, as you would well know it will be at least 3 years and up to 5 years before I know what worked and what did not. I have concentrated on a number of things and would be happy if they work. There have been some amazing new seedlings flower this year from work done in years gone by.
It is meant to be a long hot summer so that will mean looking after our trees and shrubs. The bulbocodiums should do better than ever next year.

Yes, but I would hope you'd at least have a good seed crop in the nearer future!

Hi
Maggie, if I had a particularly good seed harvest I would probably have in excess of 50,000 seeds. That would be a punishment rather than a success as I would have to do a lot of work to plant the seed out. I know as one year that was the harvest. In recent years harvest has been around the 15,000 mark. And I would be in trouble with both my wife Helen and my daughter for going outside my allocated bulb area. Last year I planted out hundreds of camellia reticulata seeds and quite a few tree peony seeds so room in our shade house is at a premium. And like any plant person I keep seeing crocus, fritillaria, trilliums and galanthus that I would like to grow!!
