Meconopsis have had a difficult time here this year with several flowers frosted however we have a few flowering pictures that I post show one flower bud that is quite distorted probably the frost and miserable weather, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
Hello, I have taken more pictures today of the strange flower on the Meconopsis which has two flower spikes both very different in all my years I have never seen anything like this still convinced it is weather related in one picture you can see flower buds inside the other flower, any ideas, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
Hello again sorry posted the same picture twice here is the other spike, Ian
-
Meconopsis racemosa, sown last year from arisaema's seeds (Trillium.no) is blooming now. I have lost a lot last year and even one just before blooming (it has totally rotten in a few days !). Nevertheless, I'm very happy of these as they are the first himalayan poppy that I grow ! These have white anthers.
-
Meconopsis cambrica : maybe very easy and common but such a light in shadow ;D
-
Hello again we are now getting ready for gardening Scotland quite a few Meconopsis are in flower so will post 2 pictures of Meconopsis Mop Head one showing 6 petals also Meconopsis Ascreavie white rare hybrid from History one Meconopsis Marit a fairly recent white form Meconopsis sheldonii the back of the flower to show it has no purple then pictures of Meconopsis punicea Sichuan Sil the perennial form, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
next M. sheldonii, M. New White seedling M. punicea Sichuan Silk 2 pictures
-
I went down the garden to take pictures this morning to find that the wind had blown the flower spike of M. Ascreavie White over broken in two a bit mad should have staked this however it has allowed me to photograph both flowers together M. Marit is on the left both pictures and I also post another picture of the Mec with distorted head, cheers Ian the Christie kind

The blue of Meconopsis and the blue of Gentiana must be the two best blues in the plant world for my money. Stunning.
And as for that huge white seedling flower - what a stunning whopper! Love that one.
-
I really like all the Meconopsis. Thanks so much to the SRGC who made me discover this genus. I'm definitely planning to plant Meconopsis somewhere in my garden
-
Ian posted these in the Flowering now pages but I thought they bear repeating here.
"We used to have lots of the beautiful small Meconopsis delavayi growing in our troughs and raised beds but the slight increase in our average summer temperatures have pushed it to the edge of its tolerance and now we struggle to keep it going.
Now we have to pin our hopes of building our stocks back up on this pot of seedlings now flowering live in the cool seed area."

Just to add that the Meconopsis delavayi flower pictured in Ian's post above is a darker purple in real life - and it is just a little one - about 5cms tip to tip across the flower - what a diminutive charmer!
This is how our Mec. delavayi used to grow

A lot of my Meconopsis were damaged or broken with the wind earlier this week and a couple of weeks ago.
Looking good Meconopsis 'Glacier Blue', a seed raised strain of amazing colour
I still think of this one as Meconopsis x sheldonii 'Cruickshank' but believe it is identical to Meconopsis Sterile Blue Group 'Bobby Masterton'
-
Meconopsis are such wonderful looking plants. :)
I sowed seeds of Meconopsis 'Glacier Blue' from seed exchange seeds and they germinated very well in May after keeping the pots outside in snow and freezing temperature all winter. :) The year before I kept the seed pots in the cellar where the temperature was above zero and there was no germination in the spring.
-
Love the Meconopsis delavayi only have a few non flowering seedlings all the big blue Meconopsis are around 2 weeks late some not starting to flower yet a few recent pictures, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
I only have a single plant of Meconopsis delavayi. Hopefully it will survive having flowered! ???

My meconopsis have been badly damaged by wind and rain. Leaves shredded and some stems broken. Meconopsis rudis/prattii are a bit tougher.
As far as I remember these were all seedlings from the same pale blue flowered plant. There is a white one with unmarked leaves and a couple which have the spotted leaves of rudis.
Meconopsis x beamishii is also in the first picture
-
Hello Roma yes the weather has been very unkind for Meconopsis this year and our big blue poppies are only now at the best probably 2 weeks later than usual we have31 German visitors on Sat so they will see them just a bit hot should not complain but a shower of rain would be good tonight. I post a few pictures no names just Blue poppies, cheers Ian the Christie kind.
-
Another Meconopsis prattii has opened. It is pale blue like the parent
Meconopsis baileyi alba from seed (thanks Gote). 6 or 7 white plants and one blue
-
It's so beautiful a shame our climate is not Meconopis compatible >:(

Yann - The price to be paid is hefty, it's 22nd of June and 16c, overcast and a good stiff wind blowing. And we dream of Albizias....

A picture this morning of Meconopsis baileyi Amy's Dream it is later this year but very happy it has survived,( the original plant was fro Cyril Lafong grown from seed,) cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
Interesting flower, Ian. Are there any other fully double Meconopsis?
-
John : yes i know, today 34°c 8) quite impossible to maintain this fascinating genius in my land.
-
Impossible here too!
-
Blue poppy time on the coast. Grew these from seed in 2012 as betonicifolia and if we had been smart we'd have planted them out straight away. Instead kept them potted another year when many "bolted" and fizzled. We now presume they are ex a 'Lingholm' that originally came from Ian the Christie kind. Thoughts?

Hi
I can grow only a few meconopsis species on my balcony.
This one comes from the seed exchange.
Meconopsis cambrica / double flowered orange form.
This is a pity the flowers only live just a little more than one day...

Hello John superb plants and I guess that I gave you seed of some of the odd fertile plants we have well worth trying to keep going not Ling holm good, luck, cheers Ian
-
Ian
This was from seed off a plant that a friend got from you at your nursery in atumn 2003. So I reckon the same as one of your fertiles eh?

Meconopsis chelidonifolia
Meconopsis wallichii
-
The second Meconopsis walichii is flowering now. It is way above my head. The first one has flowers at eye level now which are easier to photograph. I measured one at 9 foot a few years ago when I removed the dead plant. Much easier to measure when it is lying on the ground ;D
-
Hope some seed ripens before it falls over completely.
-
That must be getting on for 7 feet long now, Roma?
-
I think it is, Maggi. I will measure it when I remove the corpse. The other one which started flowering earlier is a bit shorter with smaller flowers so I particularly want to get seeds off this one.
-
This was a surprise yesterday. I hadn't even noticed the flower spike developing. Unfortunately too late to get seed.
Meconopsis staintonii
-
It's still flowering :) 8 flowers open yesterday before the wind got too strong. Then there was heavy rain so it looks a bit shredded today. The seed pods look fat but i'm not sure the'll ripen now.
I pulled up the 2 plants of Meconopsis wallichii today. The little one was over 6 foot and the bigger one about 8 foot 6. The seed pods on it do not look promising but I collected a few and hope there are a few viable seeds among the dust.
Meconopsis staintonii
-
A gorgeous color, Roma, and quite a treat to see at this late date.

I think so too
Meconopsis (infertile Blue Group) out of season, out of focus
-
Most Meconopsis are now dormant we are concerned about this very wet Autumn the ground is saturated roots will maybe rot as we approach the shortest day and head for Spring look forward to better weather next year. I have several Monocarpic Meconopsis rosettes just now look great will post . M. staintonii and M. superba. cheers Ian the Christie kind.
-
The warm soggy weather cannot be good for any of us - or our plants. The over=wintering rosettes won't enjoy it much either I suppose., even though they look so pretty with their rainy "diamonds"
-
Hello Maggi, I would be very happy and so would Santa to have a decent snowfall with some frost to kill all the bugs that attack our plants in winter, we send all Plant Enthusiasts special greetings for Christmas and New Year, cheers Ian the Christie kind.
