Hi all
here is a pic of a true Gal. caucasicus ( ex Georgia )
This plants have also a single mark ,grey leaves and a volute vernation
...patience Anthony ....I have to wait until we have wether to make pics ....
-
Hans, do you know what the latest thinking is about what the morphological differences are supposed to be between Gal. elwesii monostictus, alpinus and the more recently re-discovered examples of wild caucasicus? (apart from where they're found of course).
-
Martin : I know you have written before some days that G. elw. ssp. monostictus has different chromosomes than G. elwesii
Do you have further informations ?
-
Another Galanthus caucasicum, I think ::)
-
Rafa :
I fear no !
do you have a location ?
-
yes... you are right Hans, it could be Galanthus alpinus... they came from Russia.
-
Rafa ,
it is also not alpinus they have a more ligth ovary
...I suppose it is a G. elwesii v. monostictus - they have such green ovaries
-
I received two specie from my friend in Russia but I lost the labels... could it be Galathus cabardinicus?
*cabardensis
-
Could you look for the vernation please ?
G. cabardensis has a applante vernation ( similar like lagodechianus )
If you would know the locations.....?
-
a leaves detail
-
Rafa :
and the location ?
please ask your friend
-
Those are definitely applanate vernation. Looks very different from elwesii.

Hans, the average DNA mass measurements are: elwesii 55.3 pg, elwesii monostictus 59.1 pg, so monostictus has more DNA than elwesii. alpinus is (average) 62.2 pg.

Martin - thank you for this informations -really interesting .
In my eyes is also a difference between G. elwesii and G. elwesii ssp. monostictus :
monostictus have more green leaves
and the multiplication is more vegetativ -the bulbs splitt always very quick
-
Hans did you notice the extra pic above?
-
Anthony ,
I have it seen later - now my text is changed ....

Hans,
Great to see the true species. I'd heard it had been rediscovered, so nice to see the pics of it. It's rather pale in the ovaries as well by the look of it. Thanks for posting these pics to show us what the species should look like. Hopefully it can be kept pure so that it doesn't go the way of the original collections and hybridise with elwesii to the point of loss of the true species.
Thanks again. :)
