They both are Arthur.

Nice and short how we like them Dirk. Well done.
-
Many thanks to everybody.
Kris, the substrate is a mixture of loam, peat and perlite. At the moment the upper layer is very dry and I do not trust to myself yet water to give. The right winter still comes certainly. Maybe the blossom at later time in March would have been a little bit bigger.
Do you give water in winter?

My first Juno nicolai
-
Very nice form.

After an unusual stormy weather we had during the last 10 days, I. palaestina 'Blue Form' is blooming again.

It brings sun in our very grey weather of today. Great plants Oron.
-
Fantastic form, Oron!
Here first Iris persica starts to bloom.
-
Fantastic flowers Oron and Hans.
We have to deal with colder weather first I'm afraid.

Beautiful selection of I. rosenbachiana Steve. My first Juno is just starting to flower, I. nicolai from Hissar Mts. Must get a photo soon.

Many thanks Arthur and Otto.
I just wish I could grow them as well as you guys!
-
Great Pictures, fantastic plants!
While a bit higher in the mountains there is a lot of snow, in the garden a seedgrown Iris persica flowered for the first time, and one which already flowered in the past.
-
Nice images and a lovely plant Hans!
Is there snow on the Serra de Tramuntana?
Here is my Iris rosenbachiana "Tovilj-Dara" in flower:

Hans and Steve thanks for sharing these beauties :P

May apologies for being late in letting you know that the British Iris Society was holding a spring show today at Pembroke Lodge Richmond Park.
However, here are a couple of photos from Kit Strange - soon to be the Speaker at the SRGC Dunblane Bulb Day - from Kew, of Iris being tended in preparation for that show .......

Seems so...... from @Unmondejardins on Twitter

I thoroughly enjoyed my day at Pembroke Lodge. The sunshine brought out crowds for Richmond Park so parking was difficult but worth the struggle to see Kit's display from Kew, many grown from seed.
-
Seems so...... from @Unmondejardins on Twitter
Bizarre!!!
I have only ever been there in the baking heat at which time the prospect of snow (or even rain) seems vanishingly remote!
-
Here a picture taken near Lluc taken two days ago- annual precipitation is about 1500 mm there (more than in most areas of germany)- nearly all in Winter.
-
Back to Junos - here the clump of yesterday flowers now completly open. :)
-
Amazing!!!
I remember watching Black Vultures and Booted Eagles near the monastery.
They would be hard to spot in a white-out! ;)
-
A lovely Iris persica Hans!!!
-
Thanks a lot Steve, you had good luck spotting Booted Eagles - at the right place it is easy to see Black Vultures (and also griffon vulture), but there are only very few Booted Eagles around and even living here I do not see them very often.
-
Hans,
Wonderful I. persicum as always... :)
-
I've grown Iris nicolai 'Varzob' form for several years now, but did not repot it for several years. On doing so last year I discovered that it had formed three bulbs and obviously it has responded well to a bit more care. I have already removed four faded flowers for the photograph.
-
How did you get that two-dimensional effect, Peter - the image looks like a hyper-realistic painting.
-
It's just photographed against a matt black background (black velvet) in my studio - known to my wife as 'the conservatory'. ;)
I used diffused lighting - i.e. the vertical blinds were drawn. ;D

Ah, "just" that then......... ::)
-
Now that you mention it..... I seem to remember that I was experimenting with some LED lights (similar to ones Jon Evans has been using at AGS shows) to give the picture a little sparkle in the shadows.
Looks like it worked. 8)
-
This should be Iris persica from the Jenny and Jim- 592.522-, sown 2004 - first flowers 2015.
-
Nice photograph Peter. Let me guess, camera on a tripod; a focal length of about 100mm, aperture f18? f22? Low ISO so shutter speed of about 1/2 second?
-
Not a bad guess - the camera was on a tripod. The EXIF data shows focal length 55mm, f11 @ 1/20th, 400 ISO (would normally be lower, but I forgot to change it!)
-
Nice plant Peter
Here is Iris persica from a forumist.
Also iris rosenbachiana that i've tried to kill
-
Fantastic Ian! Wish I could grow Iris rosenbachiana!
One which grows well here: Iris x 'Sindpers'

iris bucharica

Thank you.
Steve, this yellow Iris I also got from Frank Schmidt. I think Luc's opinion is correct. It is probably a slender shape of the Iris bucharica.

Don't be jealous Jan you own a nice collection, serious grower in the corner ;)
Yann, I'm just a small grower.
-
Two small species that came from Jan Jilek in 2013.
I'm not 100% certain of ID as both came as "sp." but I think the names are correct.
Both of these species have only been described in the last couple of years.
Sadly the first was not in flower on Valentine's Day! ;)

The late Hans Höller, who was so respected and loved in this forum and others, is well remembered in this very beautiful Iris hoellerii.
Hans was a great plantsman and is much missed.
-
Steve stunning photos and of course the subject.

I apologize for the bad translation.
It is not Juno narbutii
:'(

I have something similar from Afghanistan, a little more color.
Afganistan, Namukab Mountains, 2000m

Thanks Jan, you're right of course. It's Iris nusairiensis. It was my error

Ebbie, it happens. I did not mean any harm. :-[

After 21/2 months without a computer I'm finally able to post photographs again. Got quite a backlog, but here is one from yesterday: Iris magnifica 'Agalik'.
-
Also, by Frank Schmidt "Juno Afghanistan violet". Does anyone know its name?

Iris hippolyti ??
-
Iris hippolyti ??
Looks a lot like my Iris magnifica - see previous post.
-
Thanks Luc and Ralph.
Iris hippolyti is according to Buried Treasurs by Janis "a very dwarf species, reaching only 5-8 cm tall ...". My plant is more than 30 cm high.
At the Iris magnifica I have already thought. But irritates me the origin of "Afghanistan". But maybe Iris magnifica is also present there?
-
Thanks Luc and Ralph.

I bought a yellow Juno sp ex Afghanistan from Frank. Because it was from Afghanistan I assumed it had to be something exotic, rare and unusual ........it is however, Iris bucharica.
I would agree with John that your plant looks like Iris magnifica -the natural range of which extends south from Turkmenistan/Uzbekistan into northern Afghanistan.
-
Boys, Juno magnifica flowers have wings. ;D ;D ;D
-
Here you have the whole group
-
I had a moment to look, that's exactly it.

Yes, this is it. But is it Iris magnifica?
I see no wings on the falls as magnifica should have.
-
Ebbie, It's Juno vicaria from the mountains Chulbair, Uzbekistan. At 105% ;D
-
Then the child has a name now. Thanks Jan.

Iris vicaria Sina

what happens when you leave a green house grown Iris outside for bees to pollinate and it rains hard and the wind blows over night .....
Iris 'Russian Kavalergard'
-
Hi,
a couple of shots of Iris magnifica alba currently flowering in the garden on a sunny south facing bank.
There are 12 stems some with 12 buds.
It grows in quite a sandy soil.
I would like to divide it later in the year - when is the best time to do this?
thanks,
David
-
Having just received a few seeds of Iris galatica, can anyone please give me a few pointers as an "Idiot's Guide to sowing Junos..."?
Sow now or later in the year? Surface sow or at depth? Leave the seed pot outside or under cover. Regular sowing treatment or do they benefit from cutting? Any tips appreciated.
Thanks!
-
Unless there are any suggestions..? I'm going to sow them now, conventionally and on the surface with just a covering of grit. Someone shout now if I'll be making a mistake...
-

I'm not up to speed on such matters - I thought all Iris seeds germinated better when cut?
-
Thanks Maggi.
The seed are quite small so it could be fiddly. I have a dissecting microscope, which would help but as we have a moving date (we can start moving boxes etc after our return from the Aberdeen show) I'm not sure I have the time to be cutting seeds and all the patience and hygiene that would entail right now. A bit of research on this forum has suggested that I could try sowing naturally, which does not risk catastrophic losses and if nothing shows up after a while try forced germination by retrieving and cutting (some of) the seeds later on. I like the idea of reducing/spreading the risks, so they'll go into a pot for now.
-
Hi Matt,
I have recently sown a variety of Junos seed, from what I have read they are best sown in early Autumn on the surface with a thin layer of grit over them.Only water once and not again until there is some sign of germination.this is the way that I have sown mine and it is also a first attempt at Junos Iris by me so time will tell.Best of luck with yours,
regards John.
PS mine are under cover.
-
Thanks for the tips, John. I'll bear these in mind when deciding what to do. Cheers, M
-
this Juno grew among the bulbs of Iris aucheri. Any idea of what it is?
-
Oleg,
Looks like Iris bucharica.
-
Thanks, Oron. Most probably, it is
-
First Juno here is Iris planifolia - first time to get it to flower in a pot, the ones in the ground are a week away from opening,
cheers
fermi
-
Fermi, absolutely wonderful Iris. I haven't tried junos yet but I'll get to it.
-
Fermi and Jamus , after seeing your contribution I went down to my bulb beds at the bottom of the garden and found Iris stenophylla ssp. allisonii in flower ,beautiful and thank you Marcus for your generosity .
-
Oh wow that's a ripper Otto, nice colours. I will grow these but I have too much on my plate right now with the oncos and the rock garden and everything else. There is time...
-
fabulous Iris Otto and Fermi stunning colors, I am green with envy,
Regards John.

Beautiful Fermi. I have these on my list for the future.

From SRGC Seedex 2010, Juno Iris magnifica (ex)'Agalik'
cheers
fermi
-
Great marking on the flower, fermi.
-
Hi Fermi,
what sort of mix do you use for your Junos in pots.
Cheers John.
-
Hi John,
I use a quick draining mix - usually normal potting mix with about a quarter more by volume of coarse sand or grit. However the bulb itself is not in the potting mix, just the roots. I surround the bulb in sand/grit and the tip of the bulb is about an inch below the top of the pot.
cheers
fermi
-
Thanks for the information Fermi, I have some seeds of Junos Orchoioides germinating now still a very long way from being potting size bulbs though.
Cheers John
-
Previously, in 2011 we heard from Janis that he had thought to have Iris atropatana but this proved not to be the case when Tony Hall at Kew examined the plants given him by Janis - see these old posts :
http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=6439.msg198022#msg198022 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=6439.msg198022#msg198022) - with photos of the mis-identified plants in 2011

Now I have seen on facebook this photo from Tamar Galstyan of what appears to be the true plant.

Art600 commented that the species is to be /has been (?) written about in an article for the Species Goup of the British Iris Society.

Such a beauty 8)
-
8) Cor, not a bad surprise for December, is it ?
-
I have only bought this plant recently - Iris stenophylla - and now it is already flowering. Such a beauty! But I'm a little worried.. Will it suffer from being up through the winter? Should I keep it frost-free?
These are all the same plant at different times of day
-
Vincent, a realy nice flower. If the foliage does not become too long, there might be no problems with light frosts.
-
lovely :)
-
Thank you Udo! Do you keep your junos in a greenhouse or in a bulbframe? You have a really nice collection, it's such a pleasure to look through the pages of the juno thread!
-
Thanks Vincent, i have only a small collection from Juno-Iris. All growing in a cold greenhouse.
