Hello from France ! i am retired engineer, near Dijon, in Burgundy. Please, excuse my bad English ! After three years of failure, I hope ! I planted two packets of seeds (packets one month in refrigerator, then in a container in special mixing, placed in the garden in winter and, in february, then in greenhouse, 50°F ..after 1 month 1/2 only ONE birth !, long growth. After cotyledons : hairy little leaf ! yet long growth, 2 little leaves almost on standby, then ,after transplanting in the garden, very good growth, 6 or 7 leaves, now about 6 inches ! ( I do not know how to send a photo )..The plant is protected day and night against slugs ( no use of poison !! ). I now await the winter, I think the leaves will fall ( ? ), Then the spring..green shoots ( ? )..blue butterflies..Scotch whiskey !
Best regards to you all !

Hello Jean - welcome to the Forum - and good luck with your blue poppy - I'm sure you will go on to grow more!
And thanks to Mark for his help with posting a photo :)
-
Thanks very much Maggi ! I watch over him; marveled at the gardens of Scotland !
-
Jean: Yes, we are so luck here to have a climate that benefits the beautiful blue poppies- even today, when it is dark, a gale is blowing and there is so much rain!
-
best blue poppies we every had were planted below the rain downpipe off one of the greenhouses - it was well drained but always damp

Hello Jean, I am sure your healthy Meconopsis seedling will survive the winter it is M. baileyi used to be betonicifolia so hope it will flower next year like this, cheers Ian the Christie kind

Hello from France . My one and only blue poppy (seeding) is still green. (I put a picture Oct. 13). Will it fade with the first frost? And then if he did not die during the winter small leaves in April? Thank you very much for your answers
-
Hello . A little answer ? I'm quite beginner! Merry Christmas
-
Your poppy leaves will turn brown after the first frost but there should be a bud deep in the leaves which will start to grow again in February/March. The new leaves are hairy and look like rabbit ears to start.
Hope you are successful.

Thanks very much Susan. On the small picture your dog is a pug? Happy holidays
-
Heather is a border terrorist ;D and killer of rabbits
-
The little head resembles that of our 4 pugs .Thanks Susan, I'll wait until the first frost !
-
hello from France ! my only blue poppy (?) seedling appears healthy after winter. In Scotland when will they bloom? thank you for your advices. sincerely
-
It's looking good. Don't be tempted to water it from above especially if it is hot and sunny. This can cause mildew. They flower in June in Scotland.
-
Thanks very much !

Hello from france : it was really a dream : seeds Blue Poppy from Thomson and Morgan, last year, great care and ...a little, little pink flower ! very sorry I am !
-
What a pity it's not a good blue. Sometimes the weather can affect the colour a bit but it looks like you have had a poor seed batch. Now you know you can grow them then try with some SRGC exchange seed. Meconopsis x lingholme is a good blue and puts up side shoots so will survive a few years. What you have is Meconopsis betonicifolia, it doesn't look as if it has a side shoot for next year.
-
Thank you very much Susan ! please, what is : " some SRGC exchange seed " ? I thought that " meconopsis betonicifolia " was the "true blue poppy " Not ?
-
This forum is run by the Scottish Rock Garden Club(you don't have to be a member to join the forum) There are details on how to join the club rather than just the forum on a link on this page. You then get acces to the seed exchange, 2 magazines, shows and meetings in Scotland.
Meconopsis betonicifolia is the blue poppy but there are others, the best perennial is Meconopsis xlingholme. There is always seed of both in the exchange in November.
Hope this helps. Any questions about joining ask Maggie

-
Jean - good to have you join the SRGC - I have some "blue poppy" seed which I will send you.
-
Many thanks Susan; should I put them in the refrigerator for planting in 2016 or can I plant now?
-
Jean - I would sow the seed as soon as it arrives.
