68th SRGC Seed Exchange 2014-2015
We hope that many of you have already, or are just about to contribute seed to the SRGC Seed Exchange :)
Please send the seed to arrive Stuart Pawley BEFORE the 31st October - you can email him a list in advance of seed you are sending if you suspect it may be late in arriving. All details are below.
Your contribution the the Seed Ex. is much appreciated.
The Seed Exchange online ordering system will go "live" probably in late November - there will be a post here and on the main site when that happens.
Online ordering means your requests are clearly received by the seed team and makes the listing of seed included to you in order to comply with overseas regulations much more simple, and removes the need for members to make those lists when ordering.
As in previous years, in the online system there will be the chance to "click" to search info/images on the seeds offered, to help with those species with which you may be unfamiliar.
Those preferring to order by post may do so and still enter the system to make their payment.
Other Notes:
Seed exchange charges remain unchanged
As was the case in 2013-14, all members will have to pay for all seed requests.
We have decided to keep the rates unchanged; this means that all members will pay £5,
€7 or $10 for their main seed request in 2014-15, and the same for each order of
25 packets in the surplus distribution. Full details of how to pay will be included in
the Seed List and online, and you can pay online for both online and paper
requests. We can only accept cheques in sterling from a UK bank, and can accept
sterling, Euros or US dollars in cash.
Autumn 2014 Seed Donations
Please send seed donations, individually packaged per variety, preferably in a
paper envelope, and cleaned of all seed cases, debris, insects, etc to:-
Prof. Stuart Pawley, Acres of Keillour, Methven, Perth, Scotland, UK, PH1 3RA.
Please include your name and address and a clearly written alphabetical list
of the seed you are sending. Please don’t be put off if you only have a small
amount of seed of a species, or only a few species to send - it may be the small
amount of seed that no-one else has, and that someone would love to have.
The deadline for seed to arrive at Stuart’s door is 31st October 2014.
If you have “late maturing” seed that cannot be sent until later, please send the
information about this as early as possible and before 31st October, to Stuart at
gsp.srgc@btinternet.com.
Send the list in the text of an e-mail, not as an attachment. Stuart can’t afford a computer virus at this critical time. It is important to send the information early so we can produce the seed list in good time. Please send late seed as soon as you can.
Seed Lists
All donors and overseas members (with a postal subscription)will receive a seed list by post automatically. Orders may be made online or by post.
Home non-donors should request a list from Stuart Pawley, and send a C5 stamped
addressed envelope to him. Last date for requesting a list is 14th December.
The seed list will be available from mid-November, and will go online at the same time;
all members can browse and order online as well as by post.
The online seed password is included in the paper version of the Secretary's pages and in the Journal.
Those members receiving their Journals by post need to REGISTER by first accessing the system via the password printed in Journal 133 (on page 5)- Important Notice : A mistake has been made in the password printed in the Journal: the first two letters there should be in upper case, the next four in lower case - the password in the printed seedlist is correct........ after that they enter their full details and choose a personal password and will activate their seed accounts. If the activation email does not appear to arrive, please check the spam filter online on your email provider's site - such automated emails can be caught up in that way by some providers and some customers of hotmail and gmail may not receive these automated emails. Once they have activated their accounts, postal members need to LOG IN with ther membership numbers and the personal password they have chosen.
Those members holding an "E-subscription", who only access their Journals online, need only LOG IN with their e-number and the personal password they use to access journals.
Seed Packeting
Seed packeting will be done during November / early December. Ian Pryde would
be grateful to hear from any UK member willing to volunteer to packet seeds.
Full instructions and guidance will be provided; details from Ian Pryde on 01875
615185 or 07746 298334 or at ipryde@btinternet.com
Seed Distribution: early 2015
From 2014-15, we have a new Seed Distribution Team. After twelve years of
superb service to the Club, the Edinburgh Group is taking a well-earned break.
Our very grateful thanks and congratulations go to them for managing the distribution
so well for so long; they have done a fantastic job.
In 2014-15, the South-West Scotland Group will be a taking on the Distribution role, and the Club is very grateful to them for picking up the baton.
Full details of the arrangements for ordering seed will be included in the seed list and on the website.
Seed requests must reach the new Seed Request Manager, Neil McNulty by 15th January.
We cannot guarantee to meet requests received later. The South-West Scotland Rock
Garden Group will begin seed distribution in early January; we aim to have all
main requests completed by January 18th.
Donors’ seed requests are completed first, on the basis of their donation record.
Donating more seed and for more years moves you up the list. Non-donors and
surplus seed requests will be dealt with in order of their arrival date with Neil
McNulty.
Surplus seed distribution will not begin until all main requests are
completed; and not before Jan. 18th, so members will receive their main and
surplus requests a few weeks apart.
We hope to complete surplus distribution by the first weekend in February.
Please do not enquire about the whereabouts of seed requests until after 5th February; queries should be addressed to Neil McNulty, 6 Main Rd, Crookedholm, Kilmarnock, KA3 6JT, Scotland, UK.
neil.mcnultysrgcseedexchange@talktalk.net
US Members
US members must have a ‘Small Lots of Seeds’ permit, which is issued by APHIS.
You can find details of how to get a permit at:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/plants/plant_imports/smalllots_seed.sht (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/plants/plant_imports/smalllots_seed.sht)
ml
This must be a ‘small lots’ permit, as this does not require UK phytosanitary
certification.
You must enclose a copy of the permit and conditions and a green/yellow customs
label for each order - one for a main order, and one for each surplus order of 50
packets.
If you order online, you must still post the permit documents and labels to Neil
McNulty (or you may send them to Stuart Pawley with your seed donation). You
can copy your permit as many times as you need. Please ensure your permit is still
valid before you send copies to us; the permits are valid for three years.
We must stress that “no permit, no seed” is the SRGC rule! We will do our best to
get everyone their seed, but it must be in compliance with USDA regulations.
-
Woohoow, received the seedlist yesterday. Wonderful list, as always! Any idea when the order form will be online?
-
Hi Maggi this is my first seed distribution and I have to say I'm really impressed, that's some list.
-
The online Seed Exchange ordering service will go online SOON! (Patience, Friends - I remind you that it is a virtue!)
A notice will be posted here, and on the main Seed Ex. page when the service is live.
I remind all postal members ( those who receive their Journals by post) that before they can order or pay for seed they must register and activate a new seed account each year. This is done via the Seed Ex. pages when the service is operational.
-

I'm a bit of a rascal, never heard of virtues... ;) ;) :P :P
-
Has the seed list been posted? I read that it would be posted at the same time as it is mailed out, but I don't see it anywhere... ? Could someone direct me to its location, please?
-
Lori, the seed exchange is listed under "About Us" on the main SRGC page, but the seed exchange link is not visible on my computer for some reason. I found a link under About Us, Events, "Quick Links": http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange) . But there is this note:
"The SRGC Seed Exchange Service is closed at the moment."
Does that mean the payment service or the seed list itself? I can't find the new seed list. Are people already ordering?
-
Thanks, Gene. I got that far as well, and thought the seed list would be posted there (as it sounded from a couple of comments here and elsewhere as though the seed list was available for viewing, if not yet for on-line ordering, or had at least been received by mail). I'm sure the question will be answered shortly. :)
-
The online seed system is not yet activated that is for ordering or paying - postal seed lists are still arriving with many Members. We try to make it as fair as is possible between those using the postal system and the online version so wait until we know that most have received their postal lists before activating the online system.
Please be patient, we will let you know through these pages when it is activated - it should be in the next few days.
-
http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange) is the Seed Exchange page in the main site
While Donors may have already received their seedlists, the majority of lists are still in the post.
The delay is to allow the seedlist to have a better chance to reach our members in more distant countries.
It has been stated that a notice will be posted here and n the main page when the seed exchange goes "live".
At that time the list will be available for browsing online as well as in the ordering system.
Please be patient - while it is stated by the Seed Team that the list will be available at the "same time" - it is not possible for the Web Team to do this when were are asked to allow time for paper lists to reach far-flung places , and when we are not told when the lists are posted out. :(
-
Online ordering is now enabled :
To order seed online or pay online for seed ordered by post, a registration is required each year by members receiving their Journals by post. Please note that postal members need to re- register and activate a new seed account each year. This registration is via the seed service pages ( link below) NOT via the main SRGC web page.
If you have registered via the main site you will ONLY be able to access the online seed ordering service if you are a current e-subscription holder.(e-subscription members are those members who access the journal online.)
Please read the notes and follow the instructions carefully, bearing in mind that the SRGC system is individual and may differ from other systems!
Those members receiving their Journals by post need to REGISTER by first accessing the system via the password printed in Journal 133 (on page 5) - BUT please note there is a mistake there, the first two letters there should be in upper case, the next four in lower case - the password in the printed seedlist is correct - after that they enter their full details and choose a personal password and will activate their seed accounts. If the activation email does not appear to arrive, please check the spam filter online on your email provider's site - such automated emails can be caught up in that way by some providers.
After activation, postal members will then LOG IN with their membership number and their own persoanl password
Those members holding an "E-subscription", who only access their Journals online, need only
LOG IN with their e-number and the personal password they use to access journals.
The password for initial access to the online system in 2014/15 was shown in Journal #133 (on page 5). If you are a "postal" member you will also need to enter your membership number (from the envelope that The Rock Garden arrives in)."E-sub" members can access their number online.
SRGC SEED EXCHANGE No. 68 : See all details and the link to the service to order or pay for seeds online: CLICK HERE (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange)
The current seedlist is available to browse HERE (http://seedexchange.org.uk/srgcseedlist.pdf)
-
Please note that postal members need to re- register and activate a new seed account each year. This registration is via the seed service pages ( link below) NOT via the main SRGC web page.
If you have registered via the main site you will ONLY be able to access the online seed ordering service if you are a current e-subscription holder.(e-subscription members are those members who access the journal online.)
Those using hotmail or gmail email accounts may find difficulty in receiving their activation emails.
Please READ the simple instructions - if you do that you should have no problems.
If by any chance the activation email does not appear in your inbox within ten minutes, then please check the online spam filter of your email provider.
-
First of all, thank you four such an interesting seedlist! And for such good instructions how to order. Even I managed to get my order through.
There was a note regarding "turnups" in the seedlist. ( This is a new word to me. I find it useful and will try to use it. At least figurativily.)
So, here is my answer to the question in the note: No, sorry to say, but my trousers does not have any turnups. Maybe I should write to "Lindhags" and suggest it? However, it does not really matter as I find the wool sweater sleeves far more useful. Not to mention what might slip into a tent´s floor, big floras, wool west coats back or letters sent to friends...
[attach=1]
As you see, no turnups!
[attach=2]
But I am happy with my trousers anyway
-
A mistake has been made in the password printed in the Journal : please note there is a mistake there, the first two letters there should be in upper case, the next four in lower case - the password in the printed seedlist is correct
-
How long should the e-mail take to arrive? I got the 'Thank you for registering' over 20 minutes ago but no e-mail, including in Junk.

Hi Paul, I have activated your account now - those using hotmail or gmail accounts can find the emails do not arrive, but I regret I have found it hard to make sure that this info is included in all notices.
-
Thanks Maggi. However I am now getting the following message.
Sorry, the membership number or password you provided were not valid or if you are a postal member you may not be registered or your account may not yet have been activated.
-
Hello Paul,
You may be getting that message ( which is a generic error message) from the cache of your machine OR - you may be entering your number and personal password into the wrong area to LOG IN , or perhaps using your number and the initial access password to LOG IN?
I have just tested the LogIn using your details and I was able to access your account straight away.
Cheers,
Maggi
-
Sorry, still getting the same problem which I have never had in previous years. I've wasted enough of your time Maggi. I'll post it in the morning thanks.
-
I assure you it is letting me in on your details, Paul, shall I email you privately ?
The error message may be coming from your cache. I would suggest closing your browser and reopening it to make a new attempt.
-
Unfortunately when ordering online it doesn't look like it is possible to prioritise second choices by preference as the update button converts the list ordered by preference into numerical order.
Quite a slick system otherwise.
-
Order done successfully, and now the excitement of waiting what I get, but there were again so many interesting seeds, that even if I get half of what were my first choices, I'm really happy. :)
-
Thanks to all in the seed team and the web team who voluntarily make the time to ensure that the Seed Exchange works! That's my order in now, the system is easy to use and hassle free...well, except for the difficult choices in deciding what species to request! :-\
Happy to do what little I can by sending in seed and am awaiting a box for packeting.
Thanks again everyone!

You could find discussion about this from previous years, Steve,. The system was made to the demands of the seed distribution team who prefer that the numbers are in order. I am told , however, that pickers do try to pick substitutes randomly from those entered to mix the choices up a bit.
Whatever, the system works and allows thousands of members to gain access to the seeds given by the donors and made up over the next few weeks by the packeters into tens of of thousands of seed packets, ready to be picked for the requests and send out around the world.

Order done successfully too this year ;)

The seed distribution team do a spectacular job. Anything that makes this job easier gets my vote.
-
Hi Maggi
Success! Still not entirely sure what was wrong but you certainly sorted it thanks. Mind you, I am a technophobe!
Best wishes
Paul
Good to know Paul has succeeded too!
-
Just tried registering, I got the activation clicked on the link and I got this
Sorry, the registration activation failed. This could be because your account has already been activated. If you cannot log in please contact SRGC for help.
I have cleared my caches etc and am still getting these messages. I am using my password to log in
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Edit by maggi - Glad to report Neil now has access to the seed exchange!
-
All worked for me, now the wait to see what I have got! Congratulations on an excellent system.
-
Neil, let me see if I can help you out - It may be you are being thrown off by the mistake in the printing of the password!
To begin you need to use the access password to enter the registration system. Once in you enter your details and choose a password - then you will activate the registration and you will then use your number and personal password to LOG IN to the system to make your choices. I will email you with a note of both your number and the password, so you know you have that okay.
Cheers,
Maggi

All done, easy as pie :)
-
Done. And I thought I was being attentive, checking every day .. but I find I've missed the start gun by over 24 hours!! lol.
You should arrange for signal guns to be fired all down the east coast, Maggi, at least from Aberdeen to Montrose!
-
Thurso to Dover!
-
Thank you for interesting seed list this year too.
My online order and payment process finished smoothly :) All that remains is receiving the seeds now :) :)
Perhaps I found a mistake in the seed list. The #2811 is described as Narcissus clusii × romieuxii petunioides. If the seeds are from me, that is Narcissus clusii × cantabricus petunioides ;)
-
These links to Google are very useful (in most cases) but can result in a lot of time not exactly wasted but used unproductively ;D I spent a while studying Vireya rhododendrons. Did you know there is one called 'Margaret of Scotland'?
-
To all who had problems to order seeds: Especially as a foreigner who's mother language is not English, it's hard to understand the instructions. But Maggi is always around to help you out. A big hurray for her!!!
After 2 years having problems, this year was the first year I had no problems at all. Was able to complete my order within 15 minutes. So don't despair: if you have problems, Maggi will help you and after a while you will be able to do it all on your own.
A huge thank to the team who made it possible to order so easily.

when was the journal sent out?
-
Hi Graeme I recieved mine on Saturday, so I should say Thursday or Friday.
-
when was the journal sent out?
I'm presuming you mean the seedlist, Graeme. The printed seedlist is only sent out in the UK to seed donors and those UK members who have specifically asked for it to be sent.
If you requested a list I would think it would arrive by this week - I think John is probably correct in his guess when they were sent out.
You have until mid December to request a paper list from Stuart Pawley, see the details on the first post of this thread ( Prof. Stuart Pawley, Acres of Keillour, Methven, Perth, Scotland, UK, PH1 3RA )
but the list is available online both for anyone to browse - http://seedexchange.org.uk/srgcseedlist.pdf (http://seedexchange.org.uk/srgcseedlist.pdf) - and as part of the online ordering service. http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange)
-
thanks Maggi and John
not had any seed for years from the exchange as something work wise always gets in the way - but I really do need to get back into growing things from seed
-
Maggi you are a marvel, have you had any sleep in the last 24 hours?
Thanks to all the back room & seed distribution team, you all do a great job.
-
Well, you know I don't sleep well at the best of times, Mike!
I shut down this machine at around midnight last night - and had a European fellow furious this morning because at 7.30 in the morning he'd had no reply...... ::) :-X

Of course, Maggi...going to sleep while us mainlanders want to contact you, how dare you ::) ::) ::)
-
just joined the forum so very rusty, but just wanted to say a big thank you to Maggi and Fred for fixing my problem with ordering on line,
I have just re joined after not being a member for about 18 years, what a huge change with the world of computer what a wonderful thing.
So happy to be back
Mel
-
Hi, Mel, welcome to the forum! So pleased we got your hiccup ironed out and you have got your order made.
Thanks for your seed donation and support of the Club. Mind you, we'd expect nothing less from someone originally from Montrose! ;D ;D
-
I was a bit surprised not to find back in the list one of the plants (bulbills) I'm sending to the seedex, but I see It's listed under another name - i assume most recently changed - botanical name. Just need to relabel my Oxalis Deppei to Oxalis tetraphylla I guess.
As for the other seeds i'm sending, this year's harvest is better than last year :)
-
Oxalis deppei Lodd. ex Sweet is an accepted name
This name is the accepted name of a species in the genus Oxalis (family Oxalidaceae).
The record derives from WCSP (in review) (data supplied on 2012-03-23) which reports it as an accepted name with original publication details: Brit. Fl. Gard. II, 1: t. 96 1831.
Oxalis deppei Lodd. is a synonym of Oxalis tetraphylla Cav.
The record derives from Tropicos (data supplied on 2012-04-18) which reports it as a synonym (record 23700454) with original publication details: Bot. Cab. 15: , t. 1500 1828. This has Acetosella deppei (Lodd. ex Sweet) Kuntze and Ionoxalis deppei (Lodd. ex Sweet) Small as synonyms
The above is from the Kew Plant list - so it depends which authority one is citing as to which name one uses - Stuart Pawley has decided on the second version it seems. :-X
Thank you for your support of the seed exchange, François ! And thanks to all the other people who have so generously given seed. 8)
-
Thursday evening - I have been having terrible problems with my email today - it seems that BT are failing to provide an acceptable service to a great many of their customers today - if the comments around the internet are anything to go by! As you might imagine, this is proving very disruptive to my efforts to assist those of you getting in touch to check your membership numbers for the seed exchange - please be patient. I expect to receive all your messages eventually and I will reply!
Maggi Y.
-
Thanks for your help (yet again!), Maggi :-*
All done and paid for but a lot easier from the lap-top or the PC than the tablet - maybe just because I'm not "a digital native"!
The links to the search-engine made it easier to decide but I'm sure I missed a few "must haves" in the race to complete the requests!
cheers
fermi
-
As I know fermi acknowledges, it is not possible to have a system that is individually tailored to the desires of each member - it is a case of "one size must fit all"!
He mentions "rush" and I do think that taking a measured attitude to the process is key to simplicity - many members seem to regard it as a sprint and that is not really the case. ;D
-
SRGC Seed Exchange : Please remember that main allocation and surplus seed requests must be made and paid for at the same time - the SRGC does not operate a second ordering tier. Main allocation and surplus seeds may be delivered some weeks apart - but the orders must be made at the same time as the initial allocation is made.
-
All done and paid for but a lot easier from the lap-top or the PC than the tablet - maybe just because I'm not "a digital native"!
Ian tells me that tablets , i-pads, smart phones etc are not able to do all the things that are accessible /available from a desktop or laptop computer. For business purposes, of course, it is possible to obtain "apps" to make some such things easier. Not something a charitable club can compete with, I'm afraid!
-
I am continuing to have major email problems and also some broadband problems with my BT provider - if you are trying to get in touch about the Seed Exchange I apologise for any delay there may be in accessing your email and making a reply.
-
There have been several incidents where members have not been able to log in due to careless typing of member number and password. If you have issues double check, triple check, quadruple check the credentials you are entering before contacting the seed exchange who are busy enough without this.
Anyone can make a typing error and type in 132 instead of 123, what is not excusable is offloading the problem onto already very busy people without making the effort to check your own work. Maggi has enough to do without having this added burden.
If you have trouble remembering them, write your credentials down and keep them in a safe place.
Thanks.
-
I finally received my seed list by mail yesterday (Nov. 24). This is a full week after the online notice went out, yes? (A friend told me the seed exchange was open 4 days after the fact.) It's too bad the club doesn't send out email like the Alpine Garden Club of British Columbia does. This is just a suggestion. The SRGC seed exchange is a great benefit to membership.
As it is, I'm not ordering, but not pouting! :) I "inherited" a friend's seed bank of mostly wild-collected seeds and even with sending seeds out to a dozen fellow seed-aholics have more than enough to keep me busy.
...Claire
-
All suggestions are welcome, Claire.
Usually there is a good reason already for action taken, or otherwise, by the Club.
The SRGC doesn't hold email addresses for all the members
Even if it did, organising an email send of that size of our membership of thousands would be a nightmare at a time when we are dealing with membership renewals.
Given the number of members who change their postal addresses and forget to tell us, you can just imagine how many email addresses would be out of date, supposing we had them :-X Then there would be the complaints from those who can access the seed ex. online but who have never provided an email address in advance - they would be furious that they were being sidelined because no-one was contacting them. .... it goes on.
A notice was posted both on the main site and in the forum when the online seed ordering went "live". Overseas printed lists are sent out before the UK ones, but of course, we have no way of knowing how long the postal services in all the countries we send to will take to make delivery.
The online ordering system goes live pretty much as soon as we know that the printed lists are arriving - otherwise we have to deal with a mass of people who are, often, nearly hysterical ( yes, truly ) because they cannot order online immediately.
In fact, the actual numbers of seed orders made right at the start of the seed ordering season is much smaller than folks seem to imagine. The desperate rush to order within minutes of the system going live, demonstrated by a few members, is not supported by evidence that their hurry makes a difference- there is plenty evidence to show, from previous year's reports from members that those who felt they were "late" in making their orders ( and some who were indeed tardy in so doing!) still got lots of their first choice seeds.
-

That would be me! Even with my first time ordering from the seed ex (and of course, a non-donor), and being quite late (New Year's Day), and sending my order in by post, I was VERY pleased with the seed choices I received.
-
The process was slick as a whistle once again this year! Many thanks to all those who make the SRGC seed exchange possible! :)
-
I'm not sure if I'm being stupid, but I can't find 'Phlox' in any form in either the SRGC or AGS seed exchanges. Has it changed names?
-
I don't see any entries for Phlox either - I can only assume it was a bad year for Phlox seed.
-
Don't know about the AGS, but Phlox is not in the SRGC list
-
I'm not sure if I'm being stupid, but I can't find 'Phlox' in any form in either the SRGC or AGS seed exchanges. Has it changed names?
It hasn't changed name, but we rarely have Phlox seed on the list, really sorry. I think Alplains is the best source and lists several species.
-
I don't see any entries for Phlox either - I can only assume it was a bad year for Phlox seed.
Seemingly it's difficult to collect and when collected the quantities are small and therefore it's quite expensive. I agree with Diane, Allplains have by far the best selection in the market.
-
Thanks, everyone.
I thought I must be doing it wrong, or something...
-
Thanks to all those members sending their kind words about the Seed Exchange who mention their pleasure in the opportunities to check unfamiliar plants via a "google" search from the SRGC online ordering service - I regret that the SRGC cannot accept responsibility for the number of surplus seed orders that are resulting from the temptations thus placed before members!

P.S. I should have pointed out that it is only possible to order a maximum of 200 packets of seed from the surplus distribution!

It was very helpful with the Google search, although I did stop at 150 for the surplus seeds, as I do not have enough room. I have asked "Santa" for another cold frame, although I think she is ignoring me.
-
I'm sure Santa is just very busy at this time of year, Neil - have you tried leaving bars of chocolate lying around, half-wrapped in pictures of cold frames....... ::) ;)
Plus, of course, you need to be eating all your greens, tidying your room and generally being a Good Boy......
( good luck with all that!!) :D

This message from Carolyn McHale of the SRGC 's new Seed Distribution Team
Quote from: carolyn on Today at 07:39:08 PM
I have enjoyed reading the forum for several years but have never contributed until now. I am a member of the SW Scotland group, which is about to embark on the seed distribution for the 2014-15 seed exchange. I thought it might be helpful to keep you updated on our progress over the next few weeks, perhaps even with some photos from my new camera. The local group plans to set up the distribution on Thursday and Friday of this week, and then starting on Sunday, picking and packing will begin in earnest.
-
Good news... ;D
-
I am very organised this year. AGS seeds sown on January 1st (except South African bulbs which I shall sow in September if I remember) and clean pots, labels and compost ready for seeds from SRGC. It all goes wrong if I get good germination and can't find time or space to do the seedlings justice. But every year I am still tempted to order more seeds ;D
-
The seed distribution was set up today at Threave, with 12 volunteers working all day. We had a contingent down from Edinburgh to guide us - many thanks to them for their help and patience. The day went very smoothly. We are now ready to pick orders tomorrow.
Carolyn McHale
-
Well done Carolyn and those other Seeedy Folks - a very busy day but looks like you're "good to go" now.
Nice to see Mme President there with the first order.
I don't see the tea and cakes though - I do hope that ALL parts of the set-up have been properly attended to?!
-
Don't worry, we had tea and delicious shortbread. Got to keep our strength up!
Carolyn
-
Thank goodness for that - I couldn't bear to think of your suffering , cakeless!
-
Around 150 order forms processed today. We had to move the equipment into storage for the day tomorrow and will restart on Sunday.
Carolyn McHale
-
Damn it. I just missed joining in. I will defiantly join when the next one is on. :)

Lewis, there is still time to join the SRGC and take part in this year's Seed Exchange. You have the choice of postal membership - where you get the twice yearly journals delivered to you by post, or electronic membership, where you access the journals online,( to read onsite or download to your computer or tablet to read anywhere) You can read about all options on the main website (http://www.srgc.net/site/), under the "About Us" menu ( which is also where you find the Seed Exchange access) here : http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/join-renew (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/join-renew) 8)
Payment for any subscription type can be made online and we can have you listed very quickly. For the electronic version - it will take me moments after you have paid to have you ready to go with a seed request! It can take a smidge longer for the postal type- because the SRGC Subscription Secretary might be doing something in the real world, unlike me! Still doesn't take long- because Christine is pretty speedy most days!
edit :
You can also read about the e-subscription option, here :

Another thought, Lewis - we have special arrangements for young folk and students - drop me a pm !

Good progress at the seed exchange.

Father Christmas? No, better than that! It's Carolyn McNab on her way to the Post Office with the first two sacks of seed orders. Still lots more to do though, a couple of weeks work left.
-
Just received my first choice of seeds. Thanks for all the hard work.
-
Hi just recieved my first lot of seeds, I have recieved most of what I wanted so very pleased. Many thanks to the team for there hard work.
-
Just returned from a walk in the snow to find my seeds. All first choices bar two so that's tomorrow morning sorted. Thanks to all involved in the distribution.
-
Delighted with my seeds received today. Many thanks to all involved.
-
We hope to get the next batch franked and into the post by the weekend. Still LOTS more to do!
Carolyn
-
I'm having trouble with my email again - if anyone needs to get in touch - either PM me via the forum or else email to info@srgc.org.uk
-
My seeds arrived yesterday. Many thanks to all for their hard work. It is much appreciated.
Dave
-
Seeds received, many thanks.
-
My seeds arrived today. All first choices. Many thanks to the Seed Distribution Team (and the donors).
Won't get them sown today. It is so windy I wouldn't feel safe in the greenhouse.
-
Note re SRGC Seed List # 5387
Saxifraga Identification -
We are told that a donor has misidentified a saxifraga species of seeds sent to the seed exchange.
# 5387 is not Saxifraga diapensioides ( as listed) but Saxifraga caesia (same as 5386)
He apologises for any disappointment for those who have ordered #5387 for the mistake in naming.
Many thanks to the Donor for this information
-
Mine also arrived yesterday. Very pleased with about 3/4 first choices. Thanks all for the sterling work.
-
We had some help today from the horticulture students at Threave.
We took another 2 sacks of orders to the post office. Still more to do, please be patient if you are waiting for your seeds!
-
Received the seeds last Thursday. So happy! :D The people of the seedex did a wonderful job....great work from the new crew!
-
From the SRGC Seed Distribution Team:
The 2014-15 Seed Distribution Deadline has passed.
Thank you to everyone who contributed seed, packed it and then ordered it. The requests have been processed in the usual sequence of donors, non-donors and surplus and should be completed by 21 January. Please be patient when awaiting your treasured seeds; the franking machine has a mind of its own and has led to delays in the posting of some packets.
Members of the SW Scotland group have come out in force, with assistance from Edinburgh and Ayr, battling through storm force winds, rain, snow and ice to carry out such invaluable work. The lure of the tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits and social occasion no doubt! Huge thanks to them for all their concentration, staying power, attention to detail and humour.

Great exchange for all.

You have post delivered on a Sunday botanica?
-
Forgot to say that I wanted to make a note of special thanks to whoever donated the seeds of Narcissus bulbocodium pallidus (#2802), which has been on my wish list for some time and I was VERY pleased to receive this year. Thank you, thank you! ;D
-
Just back from a week in the Lake District (much walking), with no internet access. 83 emails from SRGC to read and a package of seeds - that's next week sorted. Many thanks.
-
Seeds have arrived. First time doing this so very excited. All first choices, apart from Cyclamen coum kuznetzovii, which I guess was a case of sort supply and a high demand. But thank you, very very pleased.
-
Recieved my surplus seeds today, I did very well with my choices. Congratulations to the members involved in the seed distribution for a job well done.
-
The South West Seed Team are working like demons - John's note shows they are on to the surplus seed orders already - superb work!
-
Seeds ordered 10th January and delivered today the 19th ! What a fantastic service, congratulations and thanks to all those involved
-
Nothing here so far (because we are SO FAR away I suppose ;D )
But Cynthia (in Melbourne) tells me that our friend Royston has received his AGS and SRGC seeds yesterday,
cheers
fermi
-
My seeds arrived today, thank you so much for the team! I'm very pleased, almost all first choices. :)
This is why I don't like to order anything growing, only seeds and dormant bulbs, the shipping to Finland takes at least 10 days, and you can imagine how growing plants look after that.
-
I also received the seeds. A very big thank you to all the team for make me so happy. Thank you your work.
-
Received the first choice seeds today. Only 3 were not my first choice. Will start the seeds tomorrow and after that I will be ready for getting the surplus seeds.
Thanks to the Seed Team!!
-
Got the precious seeds last weeks and am fully satisfied with them.
Many thanks and best wishes to the seed exchange team!
-
An update from the seed team.
We have been very busy packing orders and this afternoon finished the last of the surplus seed orders. Two more big sacks were taken to the Post Office. We just have a few late orders to complete and some documentation for some of the USA orders. We hope to have finished in 2 days.
Enjoy your seeds, and thanks to everyone who helped.
-
The seeds reached my door yesterday :D Thank you very much for the seed team from Japan :-*
-
No seeds yet... :'(
-
Mine arrived yesterday, even if I only completed the ordering just a few days ago ... and all but one first choice - and very happy with the one replacement. This year I made a 'real' list for the seeds I want, makes checking faster afterwards. Some sowing this week-end for the seeds that need cold stratification :)
-
Just received mine. All first choices but 3, and the replacement are among those I wanted in the main list but did not have any more room. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Your are doing a great job, thank you very much!
Now, time to annoy all the experts with questions about how to grow the seeds .... ;)
-
I heard from a friend in Norway the other day that he had seed to sow but all the compost was frozen - so he took a bag of compost into the shower with him - sorted!
Wonderful how inventive a gardener can be , eh? !! ;D
-
Just received my surplus seeds today. Very happy with what I have received. Thanks again for all the hard work.
-
I got my seeds yesterday. I think I got all first choices. I lost the list. But I think so.
MANY THANKS!
Calin in Romania :)
-
Calin, I've emailed you a copy of your order ;)
-
seeds received this morning, week end gonna be busy ;D
-
Seeds received yesterday. All but two first choices. Thank you to all involved. You will never know how exciting it is to get that seed packet and the hope it promises!
Susan
-
Yay! Ours also arrived today! Between the two of us we only missed out on three of our first choices. Now to sort out which need to be sown straight away and which need to be stored till autumn,
cheers
fermi and Will
-
Just received the lucky dip, and I am so happy ... I have a minor problem .... I forgot to print out the list of seeds names and number so I do not know what I got here ;D ;D ;D ;D . Anyone who can help?
Regards
Corrado

Use the pdf seed list :http://files.srgc.net/seedexchange/SRGCseedlist68.pdf
Edit by maggi to change route to seedlist for reference. :)
-
Use the pdf seed list :http://files.srgc.net/seedexchange/SRGCseedlist68.pdf
Thank you , Yvain, that is exactly what to do - the seed list No. 68 is online for people to browse to see what was listed, or to check their seeds against the numbers. Previous year's lists are also available on the lower part of this page : http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange)
-
Thanks Maggi, Yvain, had completely missed that .... and now that I know the results of my lucky dip I am even happier.
Best
Corrado

Been away all week and arrived home tonight to find my seed order had arrived. Its just like christmas all over again. Many many thanks to everyone involved. No idea what will happen if they all germinate, there is hardly any room in the garden as it is. ??? ??? ???
Chris
-
Before some days I have also received the most of my wishes - many thanks to all :)
Hans
-
Help!! I'm buried in seeds!! ;D 3 large packets arrived in the post yesterday- both rounds from SRGC, and first round selections from the North American Rock Garden Society. Will have to purchase neighbouring property if all seeds germinate! Many thanks to the donors and the seed exchange crew!!!
-
Yesterday,I received main seed ordering,Antalya,Turkey.. I was busy with sowing them, so I am late to tell it..Many thanks you to all team involved.
-
Nothing here. Presumably lost in the post.
But, as always, things could be worse (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-31018681) ;) ;D
-
Still no seeds too... :(
-
Oh, Sorry Nicole, here 2nd round is well arrived two days ago (and main round a week before)
-
No sign of any seeds here yet either. ??? ??? ???
-
I have just heard of the arrival , only yesterday, of a printed seedlist with an Australian member.
I think this illustrates how awful the postal service can be at times.
An Australian member who ordered for himself and on behalf of friends has seen their seeds arrive but there is no sign as yet, of his.
I know from personal experience that the post to the Republic of Ireland can be very slow, and a small packet sent to me from France has just taken two weeks to reach me.
Clearly there are delays in delivery in many areas and I would hope that the "missing " seeds will still arrive.
I will pass to the Seed Team the names of those posting here about missing seed - but it would probably be easier now for you to email to the Seed Team direct, as in the Seed Notes.
-
I reckon I must have the record this year. Nothing to do with the seed exchange. Seed from Oregon posted on 1st October arrived last week after going round the world twice, spotted at one time in Malaysia. I am still waiting on some seed from Southern California posted on 24th November, it has successfully passed Brazil customs ??? Hopefully they won't be growing by the time I get them.
-
My surplus seeds arrived today, thank you again. :)

From the SRGC Seed Distribution Team - Carolyn McNab, Seed Distribution Manager
Oh the excitement and impatience to be sowing! As usual, all the seed requests have been processed in sequence. This started in mid January and packets have been sent out during January. Some of the early requests were completed but for a few seeds listed which came from a box that was late being packeted and hence late arriving at the distribution centre. As soon as the seeds were delivered, those requests were completed and posted too. Then the franking machine decided not to cooperate and that led to further delays. Please be patient and give the postal system a chance to deliver your much wanted choices. At this stage, we are hoping that your orders are all en route if not already safely with you.
Carolyn McNab, Seed Distribution Manager
and from Neil McNulty :
Please do not enquire about the whereabouts of seed requests until after 5th February; and then to the postal address and email address shown in The Seed Pages (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange)
-
I am building those virtuous patience "muscles", waiting. :-\
As a US participant, my seeds have to go through the Department of Agriculture inspection process. I was assigned the Seattle inspection station so I called there but my seeds have not arrived yet although others originating from the SRGC have. They advised me to be patient because "it is a busy time of year and they prioritize live plants over seeds", so it might be a few weeks even after the seeds arrive until they get to them. That might mean I miss the window for outdoors cold stratification this year, but I guess I can save them for next winter then.
-
I have always planted my seeds as soon as I get them. My germination rate is poor and I now wonder if saving the seeds indoors until the warmer weather would give better germination results? I have seeds in pots in the unheated greenhouse from the last two years that show no signs of germinating. An Alpine plant grower told me he keeps seed in pots for two years. If they have not germinated he then throws the contents in the garden.

I received Salvia nubigena 3 weeks ago from the seed exchange.I am interested in finding out who who donated the seed and has a plant of it growing in their garden. Also, where they got the plant or seed of it !

Hello Tomas - Welcome to the forum!
-
My seeds arrived Monday, Feb. 2. Everything except two selections - great stuff. Thank you to distribution team!
-
Some seed arrived to Alaska Monday Feb 2nd, and all-out hands-down record thanks to USDA Aphis Hawaii vs Houston. Some seed planted, more in progress :) Many thanks to the Seed Exchange team (esp. the new club in their first year); off and running...
-
Even seed that was thought to have gone missing is now turning up around the world- which is very good news for everyone - from the members who were waiting for it, and for the Seed Distribution Team who had worked so hard to get the orders out in the first place.
Once the seed is "in the post" there is no knowing what might happen to it on its journey around the world to members, nor, of course, is there anything the Seed Team can do about that uncertainty - so it is really nice to hear when errant packages of seed do turn up !
-
I got my Surplus seed order over a week ago here in Portland, Oregon. But I've yet to see my first round seed order which is where I hope my most wanted goodies are. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I have visions of my seed sitting on some bureaucrat's hot computer in Seattle.......
At the Scottish end is there any record of when the seed was mailed? This is in case I have to try to track it down from my end.
I'm hoping by posting this the seed will magically show up in today's mail. Please tell me most everyone does eventually get there seed. I'm always careful not to order any seed that might be viewed with suspicion.
Thanks,
Jan
-
Yes, Jan, it does happen that main allocation seed does arrive after the surplus - goodness knows how the postal services of the various countries manage that, but they do!
If you want to contact the Seed Team direct then you can email Neil McNulty :

A very happy chappy my seeds arrived today at long last, almost a month since they were posted.
A great big thank you to all those involved in the seed ex.
best wishes to all John.
-
Seeds arrived today in Michigan!
the postal zip code was cut from the mailing label so the package took over 3 weeks after release from the inspection station. But it finally arrived.
thank you for all the work

Seeds arrived yesterday, postmarked 16 Jan :o Don't know where they've been lurking for 3+ weeks but most welcome.
Thanks as always to the seed exchange team & donors.
-
Not a sign of anything here yet.
johnw
-
John, emailing you now....
-
Would you believe my first round seed finally showed up about three days ago? It was postmarked January 19th. I sure hope it wasn't sitting on a radiator or hot computer in Seattle. You'd think they'd take care of a piddly thing (from their perspective) like this just to get it out of their hair. Of course there was no explanation of why it took so long.
Jan
-
Thank goodness it got to you in the end, Jan. You can imagine how these delays infuriate the Seed Team, too.
-
When we get our Small Lots Permit in the USA, we choose which inspection station we wish to go through. It doesn't have to be the one nearest to where you live. When I got my permit, it was recommended to me by a fellow NARGS member and experienced Permit holder that I designate the Jamaica, NY office, on my permit - this, for the purpose of expedition. I am not sure how many different inspection stations she had tried, but at least two. I received my SRGC seeds on 31 January, despite the fact that I didn't place my order until 20 November (and I am not a donor).
Many thanks to the SRGC Seed Team and all the fantastic donors!
-
Hi, Maggie and Rick,
I'm sure it is frustrating for the seed ex worker bees when the seed gets hung up someplace out of their control. Our NARGS chapter has done order fulfillment before and I know how much work it is. It also seems mysterious since the second round order arrived so quickly.
Rick, I was actually told by someone (can't remember who) not to use Jamaica, NY because the seed could end up routed to Jamaica the country. I think it's a total crap shoot no matter which station you use. If your seed package ends up on the desk of someone who doesn't care or maybe primarily works on large commercial live plant orders you could be waiting for a while. At least that's my theory.
Anyway it's here. I've sown a few packets of short viability stuff. The rest is going in the fridge because we're now planning to move house. We've had it with no sun, steep, clay soil, horsetail, blackberry, English ivy (yes it's THE major invasive in Portland, Oregon), slugs and vole. A may have missed a plague or two. The kids are more or less gone-time to get a place more amenable to gardening and biking (husbeast's hobby)

Finally, there is evidence of spring in the air here, so I have started sowing seeds from the exchange. I had ordered packets of several cultivars of Gentiana acaulis. I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the packets is not Gentiana acaulis at all. The seed of G.a. 'Maxima Enzian'(#1828), and G.a. 'Rannoch'(#1829) looked familiar enough, but what came out of the packet Gentiana acaulis white (#1825) was definitely not seed of acaulis. I planted it anyhow, tagging it with a question mark for further observation. I did keep one seed aside, and might try to take a photo to share. I would describe it as being a flattened ovoid shape, whitish in colour, and having a bit of a wing extending around the outside edge. Has anyone else noticed this oddity?
