Title: Meconopsis seed
Post by: johnw on February 02, 2014, 04:02:45 PM
We were shopping at the Mid-Eastern market yesterday when Ken pointed out this out to me.  What do you make of that?

The source is shown below.

Blue poppy seed is used for cooking. Unfortunately it is the seed that is blue rather than the flowers  ;)

So no heat tolerant strain from Tehran eh?   ;)   Might put one to sleep though.

I suspect you're fully aware of this already  ;) but it's merely the seed of Papaver somniferum.

I have rather a good crop of seed on my very dark purple/black P. somniferum. Wondering if I should harvest an opium crop. Perhaps not, the authorities wouldn't be happy. :o :o :o I may wait until the seed is ripe, shake it out and burn it then offer the empty pods. They're very sought after by floral art people. Some of the plants are a metre high.

I once decided to harvest my P. somniferum seed for culinary use, but it took an age to clean, get rid of the earwigs etc. that I didn't repeat the exercise.  It is so cheap to buy that it wasn't worth it.

I remember you giving me a packet of seed, Maureen- labelled something like   " for planting not eating on cake"   ;D

You have a better memory than I do, Maggi, I have no recollection of it!

I came upon the empty packet a wee while ago, Maureen - I'd kept it because of the note.
