First Juno in flower here is Iris narbutii which opened its flower on Christmas eve.
Not the most stunning of junos but very welcome as little else is in flower.

Beautiful photos Steve.

A nice plant anyway Steve.
-
An iris planifolia with Spanish roots in flower now, weeks later than the plants from Tunesia.
-
A very early iris rosenbachiana "Vahsh" just opened.
-
Nice images of these superb junos Luc!!!
Who can fail to be impressed by rosenbachiana in all its forms?
-
Iris persica in a rather soft color.
-
Iris stenophylla ssp. stenophylla
-
Two stunning wee Junos Luc!!!
-
Beautiful early flowering Junos Luc. Iris persica seems to be extremely variable in colour. None in flower here yet but a friend in Lancaster tells me several are flowering now.
Steve, the standards in your Iris narbutii have not fully deflexed. In I. narbutii, they should be fairly large for a Juno iris. Is this the first time it flowers? Next time it might improve. In its best form it is one of the more stunning Junos. This is a picture of one I have grown in the past. It came from Jan Jilek.
-
It is the first time that this one has flowered Cyril.
Hopefully it will improve in years to come though I suspect it will never look as good as your plant.
I have another narbutii that clung on -surviving a decade of wanton neglect. I remember this being an altogether prettier plant (or maybe nostalgia is playing tricks with my memory!). Hopefully with a bit of luck, some TLC (and a judicious serving of Aberdeen Angus bonemeal) I can restore it to its former glory! ::)

It is a beautiful combination of colours. You lost it ?
-
I know it went back recently after flowering but I am not sure I have lost it completely. Will have to search for it.
-
lovely persica, Luc
-
Terrific Junos, Steve, Luc and Cyril!
A bit later than usual Iris persica also started to flower here.
-
Superb Junos Hans!
Is your garden up in the cool Tramuntana or are you in the hot dry desert of Pollença? 8)
-
lovely Hans, are the two in the foreground two different plants or do they change colour as they age?
-
Hans, it's wonderful to see Iris persica growing outside, more natural than in pots. You must have the right climate with a warm dry summer. Are these covered in summer? The ones that grow outside here are the robust ones such as I. magnifica, bucharica, aucheri and graeberiana.
-
Thanks Steve, Mark and Cyril!
@Steve - The garden is nor in Pollensa either in the cool Tramuntana but south of the mountains at an altitude of about 140m - very warm and - in general - frostfree.
@Cyril - Cover in summer is not necessary - normally I protect the plants during flowering time when I know it will rain.
@Mark - it is the same clone, here a picture I took today:
-
Terrific Junos, Steve, Luc and Cyril!
A bit later than usual Iris persica also started to flower here.
A pleasure to see these growing outside. We only can dream of such conditions.
I see that the two flowers of the plant in the front have a different base color. Does it change during maturing ?

Iris rosenbachiana -from stock originally collected near Sogor Lake, Afghanistan.
(I have been unable to find any reference to Sogor Lake on any online maps of Afghanistan but presume it is in the Afghan section of the Pamir-Altai Mountains).

Always a joy to see Steve . Here no flowers so far ....
-
Iris rosenbachiana -from stock originally collected near Sogor Lake, Afghanistan.
I. rosenbachiana is a delightful species in all its forms. The anthers are yellow which according to PC distinguish it from the closely related Iris nicolai (white anthers). There is also Iris baldschuanica which is very similar and thought to be just a synonym of I. nicolai.
Your Junos are flowering much earlier than mine Steve.
-
Steve you do have some magic iris as does Hans.
-
Cyril , I too could not find Lake Sogor on my map of Afghanistan . According to Tony Hall (Kew B.G.) I. rosenbachiana has a chromosome count of 2n=20 and I. nicolai 2n= 22.
You grow some very desirable and beautiful bulbous plants . Unfortunately they were mostly finished when we visited you after the Conference in April 2011 , when you and your wife spoiled us with a delicious morning tea .

Cyril , I too could not find Lake Sogor on my map of Afghanistan .
Knowing how easy it is for names to become muddled, especially from one language to another,
might the name Sogor be a corruption of Zorkul (or Sir-i-kol) ?
This is , I read : .........a lake in the Pamir Mountains that runs along the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It extends east to west for about 25 km. The Afghan-Tajik border runs along the lake from east to west, turning south towards Concord Peak (5,469 m), about 15 km south of the lake. The lake's northern half lies in Tajikistan where it is protected as part of the Zorkul Nature Reserve. Out of the lake, towards the west, flows the Pamir River, tracing the Afghan-Tajik border. It is therefore a source of the Amu Darya or Oxus River. The Great Pamir extends to the south of the lake.

I saw that lake on Google Earth but couldn't find the name for it.

I bought this Iris from Augis Bulbs last September.
Delighted to see 2 flowers - the second bud is now half open from this morning when the photo was taken
Iris 'Nicolai Hussar'
Taken in the kitchen hence slightly odd colouring. Outside the neighbourhood was flooded and the rain continued to fall.
-
A pleasure to see these growing outside. We only can dream of such conditions.

Thanks Luc, yes it does.

2011 must have been an early season. It was good to meet you Otto and all the other people in your group (Margaret, Ray, Roy, Pam, Cynthia and Vivienne). Hope I got the names right.
-
A couple of Junos looking good now - sadly, my inferior photographic skills do not do them justice.
I. pseudocaucasica and I. leptorhiza.
Alex
-
Beautiful plants Alex - I like your pictures! ;)

Does anyone know the difference between iris pseudocaucasica and iris caucasica ??

The first time I see iris leptorhiza. Nice colour combination.

::) Wow Alex , great Junos !

A first time flower on this seed grown collection from Tadjikistan.
Iris nicolai is a close relative of iris rosenbachiana.
-
What a superb plant Luc!
Here is one of my Iris nicolai:

Steve have you published your photos? They are superb and so good I should think for identification of different species.
-
Thanks for your kind comments Pat!
I just wished I could grow them as well as others do.
-
Luc
What a fabulous iris Nicolai. How long to flower from seed sowing?
-
Luc
What a fabulous iris Nicolai. How long to flower from seed sowing?
Not so long. This one was sown in september 2010 and germinated the following spring.
-
Very nice Steve and Luc.
Here the first of my season ...
Plant is about 10cm in height .
Iris rosenbachiana 'Tovilj Dara '
-
Also Iris leptorhiza in flower .
-
Very nice Kris!!!
The Tovilj Dara rosenbachiana collection has to be the best looking of all the nicolai/rosenbachiana types!
-
Very nice Kris!!!
The Tovilj Dara rosenbachiana collection has to be the best looking of all the nicolai/rosenbachiana types!
Thanks Steve , must admit that I agree about your quote . This is indeed a very good type. I like the dark and rich colour.
It is Janis who distribute this type as you probably know .
-
Some fantastic junos Kris. (The spell checker kept changing junos to junks) :). My Tovilj Dara will flower next week. I. leptorhiza is an elusive one for me. I once grew it (from Jan Jilek) but it got smaller and smaller every year. I think this is one with no swollen bulb. Do you grow it the same way as other junos Kris?
I. nicolai ex Tajikistan is my first Juno to flower. Grown from SRGC seeds.

Thanks Cyril ! I have this leptorhiza from the same source ......I must admit that I only have it in my collection since last year .So I don't have much experience on this leptorhiza....
Yes it is one with no swollen bulb as I remember wel .
Your nicolai looks very good. I love them very much when grow so compact ! These nicolai's and rosenbachiana's are maybe the very best of the genus Juno's . I like the ones with not much leaves at flowering point. Other favourites are persicum, stenophylla, galatica .....
-
I've grown leptorhiza for quite a few years now, and it even offsets....I grow it plunged and just like other Junos. It does indeed lack storage roots, whence the name. I bought it as a small bulb from Westonbirt plants 7 or 8 years ago....this year I have one from Jan as well, which has now finished flowering. Perhaps the Westonbirt stock is particularly sturdy?
Alex
-
Fantastic Junos Luc, Kris, Steve and Cyril - a still have did not find the clue to grow Iris rosenbachiana and Iris nicolai on Mallorca, perhaps storing them cooler in summer might help, but some other do fine. Some from yesterday
Iris planifolia_14-01-25
Iris fosteriana_14-01-25
Iris persica_14-01-25
(edit to add plant names)
-
Hans lovely to see your junos flowering.
-
Iris planifolia_14-01-25
Iris fosteriana_14-01-25
Iris persica_14-01-25
Hans, lovely to see these growing outside. I. planifolia is rather tender here, has to be kept frost free. You are fortunate to have no frost in winter.
Iris nicolai, darker falls, almost black, grown from seeds 2008.
Iris rosenbachiana 'Tovilj Dara' has opened its first flower, 3 bulbs with different stages of flowering.
-
Hans ,what a joy to see such healthy clumps of those beautiful and difficult Junos thriving in your garden . You seem to have the ideal climate . The clump of I. fosteriana brings back memories of 1971 when I was fortunate to see in NW Afghanistan whole hillsides covered with clumps of it - only shorter in flower stem length .

Very very good form Cyril , must admit that I like it !
-
Iris rosenbachiana 'Tovilj Dara' has opened its first flower, 3 bulbs with different stages of flowering.
Could not resist to make some extra pictures ........
-
Iris rosenbachiana
-collected from northern Afghanistan. I thought this would be the same as the plant I have that was collected at Sogor Lake, Afghanistan but this plant is more attractive with a bluish suffusion of the falls and rather blue standards.
-
A super plant Steve !
-
Kris and Steve
Superb plants.
My plants are not nearly as advanced and I am doubtful that many, if any, will flower. Any helpful hints greatly appreciated.

I like the bluish suffusion of the falls and rather blue standards Steve ! Good to see this variation. It make this genus even more interesting .
-
I think this Iris kuschakewiczii wil be the next to flower . I must admit that I even find the leaves very attractive...
-
The contrast on the foliage is most attractive, Kris. A very healthy looking plant that is clearly growing well for you.

An excellent colour form of this desirable Juno, Steve.

Kris, it must be very satisfying to see this Iris clumping up and looking so healthy. Look forward to seeing the flowers
-
Thanks Maggi and Cyril . Hope to show the flowers very soon .
-
Kris, your plants from Juno kuschakewiczii looks very good.
Here my first flower this spring:
Juno palaestina
-
A very nice flower Udo. Rather tender I guess ?
-
A first flower of a seed raised batch of iris galatica.
-
Another of the named selections of iris rosenbachiana.
-
A very nice flower Udo. Rather tender I guess ?
Luc, yes,the blossom is already very tender and a really unusual colour. But this species completely grows in the greenhouse, better than a lot of other Juno.
-
Thanks for all the comments and all the great pictures of so marvelous plants!

Thanks Otto, I really envy you for having seen this species in nature! I grow Iris fosteriana in the shadow of a wall, this should be the reason it grows a bit higher.
-
My very first Juno. Iris rosenbachiana
Poul
-
The first of my iris svetlanae
-
Great junos from all.
The first flower of Iris fosteriana this year (from Norman Stevens 1995).
Iris nicolai 'Red Form' from Hissar Mountains (Jilek 2010), a rather tall form. Not sure why it is 'Red Form'. I don't see much red in it.
-
Stunning Junos Cyril!!!
-
Quite a tall form of Iris nicolai
Alex
-
I had Iris stenophylla bursting into flower this week ! :D
-
Superb form of I. stenophylla Luc. Reminds me of I. stenophylla ssp. alisonii. According to B. Mathew, in ssp. alisonii (compared with ssp. stenophylla) the leaves are more numerous (6-10) with undulate margins and broad.. Flowers have shorter tube with darker and more prominent spotting and streaking on the falls.
-
I had Iris stenophylla bursting into flower this week ! :D
Stunning Juno Luc!!!
-
Iris nicolai -from the Varzob Valley, Tajikistan

Not one that sets the heather alight!

I wish I could take photographs like that! I said to my wife that I need a better camera; she said we need a new mattress!
-

Here in ful flower ............Iris persicum . persica
-
Kris
Excellent photos of a beautiful iris - I am envious of your success :)
-
A beautiful form of Iris persica (persicum?) - a dream, Kris.
Luc, You have a very fine form of the Iris stenophylla. I agree to Cyril. It is similar to the ssp. alisonii.
With me just starting to bloom Iris narbutii. At the bloom of the other Junos I have to wait quite a while.
-
Kris

Thanks Eberhard , sorry for the mistake ....(Cyclamen persicum must be in my head ....?)
Beautiful I. narbutii , here it is not in flower yet .
-
Iris kuschakewiczii ......
-
I. nicolai, I. persica, I. narbutii and I. kuschakewiczii are all splendid junos. Worth seeing again and again, especially the different forms. Thanks for posting Steve, Kris and Eberhard. The I. narbutii has a flower with more purple than other forms I have seen.
-
With me just starting to bloom Iris narbutii. At the bloom of the other Junos I have to wait quite a while.
A very fine looking narbuti, much better than mine!
Iris kuschakewiczii ......
Great-looking Juno Kris! I don't think my plant is going to flower this year.
-
what a collection of fabulous , beautiful and legendary Junos in the last few weeks , also superb photography , thank you all.
unfortunately these are not grown in Australia .
Otto.
-
Iris fosteriana at its peak now with 9 open flowers. Unfortunately I will be in Dunblane only in the morning tomorrow so will not be able to take plants to the show.

Thanks all. Maggi, it must be a very long time since I wrote this piece for the SRGC website but it is the same plant of Iris fosteriana that is featured. I got it from Norman Stevens in 1995.
-
Cyril do you hand pollinate it for the seeds? :)
-
Iris galatica .
-
Cyril do you hand pollinate it for the seeds? :)
Pat, despite growing it for so long, I don't remember ever pollinating it, not sure why because I have pollinated some other junos. Now that you mention it, I must give it a try. If successful, will send you some seeds (if you wish) as it will be thanks to you.
-
Iris galatica .
Lovely combination of colours Kris.
-
Iris caucasica ssp caucasica from Armenia.
-
Here is the first flowering of Iris kuschakewiczii collected in Kazakhstan in 2012
-
Terrific plants and pictures - i enjoy every single one, Thanks for sharing them!
Impressive group of Iris fosteriana Cyril! See the leaves are very developed already, is there a variation from season to season?
I love specially the smaller gems like Iris narbutii, Iris galatica, Iris kuschakewiczii and Iris caucasica ssp caucasica! ;)

Hans, in this particular plant, the leaves are always well developed at flowering time. I have another plant with shorter leaves at flowering time, see picture taken 2 years ago.
-
That really is a cracking Juno Maestro!!!
-
Superb plant, Cyril!
Thanks a lot for the information - thought it could come because of less light in scotland than on balearic Islands, but it seems to depend on the different clones.
-
A more robust plant and one from the KPPZ expedition: iris aucheri 'Turkish Ice'
and a second generation seedling 'Blue Star'.
-
Wonderful Junos are here to see!
With me currently in flower:
-Iris nicolai
-Iris rosenbachiana 'Harangon'
-Iris stenophylla ssp.allisonii
-
Wonderful Junos!!!
-
Stunning Juno's Eberhard !
Here Iris kuschakewiczii at his best .........

Thank you.
Kris, your iris is not bad either, too! I think Iris is kuschakewizii is one of the best Junoiris.
-
Kris
Stunning plant
How old is the plant? What feed do you use?
Hello Arthur , thanks for the compliment. I bought it in the summer of 2011 as one single bulb (maybe I get two , don't remember exactly )from Janis. I feed it with an ordinary liquid fertilizer (the ones they use for gernaniums )
It get a very hot summer rest in my greenhouse where the cacti grow ........
-
Thank you.
Kris, your iris is not bad either, too! I think Iris is kuschakewizii is one of the best Junoiris.
Thanks Eberhard , I agree with you !
-
Nice plants Kris!!!
Thanks Steve . Now something yellow to go on .....
Iris svetlanae ...
-
Iris pseudocaucasica in one of its colorforms from the Talysh Mountains in Azerbaijan.
-
Great plant Luc ,lovely to see it !
-
Kris/Luc
You never cease to amaze me with your spectacular Junos - and I know there will be more :)
-
All those Junos shown in this topic are just amazing!
-
My first iris willmottinana in flower, seedraised from Kazakhstan seed.
-
iris caucasica ssp caucasica as growing in Nagorna Karabach.
-
Not much of activity here. Pity.
Iris bucharica, origin near Nurek Reservoir in Tadjikistan.
-
Just starting is iris nusairiensis from Syria.
Is someone cultivating the white form ? It's one of my wish list !
-
Luc, I really think that is the loveliest little Juno I've ever seen.
-
Oh yes, but the Iris bucharica is also not bad!
-
Luc , 4 beautiful Junos of yours , specially the intense blue form of I. nusairiensis , which more often is a paler shade ,slightly grey .
Lesley Cox in NZ used to grow the white form of it - maybe she still does .
-
Luc, I really think that is the loveliest little Juno I've ever seen.
It's a striking colour, definitely in my top 5 of juno's.
-
Just starting is iris nusairiensis from Syria.
This must be one of the most attractive iris - I remember the fabulous potfulls of it shown by Richard Lilley at SRGC shows - breath-takingly beautiful flowers.
-

Luc, I'm speechless :o
Congratulations
-
This must be one of the most attractive iris - I remember the fabulous potfulls of it shown by Richard Lilley at SRGC shows - breath-takingly beautiful flowers.
Sadly I have not been able so far to locate any photos of Richard's exceptional pots of Iris nusariensis - but here are a couple of others winning Forrest Medals from show reports in the SRGC journal - the first from Lionel Clarkson at his home show in 2005
[attachimg=1]
and the second from James Cobb at Stirling in 2006

-
Hi,
can anyone ID this plant, flower time is from April to May.
Thank you
-
Just starting is iris nusairiensis from Syria.
Is someone cultivating the white form ? It's one of my wish list !
Luc, this has to be one of the best selections of Iris nusairiensis. So short!
-
I agree Cyril and so electric blue... :o :o They normally tend to be a little more greyish/blue don't they ??
Gorgeous !
-
Hans, did thou get it from seeds ?
-
Luc!!! :o :o :o
Great plants - to dream for.
Hans, did thou get it from seeds ?
Fred, unfortunately, it is not mine .... ;)
-
A plant someone gave me as a present but I can't remember who : iris kuschakewiczii x bucharica 'Dinarzade'
-
The same iris nusairiensis a bit later.
-
Still looking great Luc. My I. nusairiensis is further behind but Iris svetlane is flowering now.
-
Forgot about this taller Juno iris, Iris aucheri 'Snow Princess'
-
A bit taller indeed Cyril but a nice plant anyway.
-
I now have Iris nusairiensis four years without a single flower. What am I doing wrong?
Here the Juno Iris bloom significantly later than in Majorca, England, Scotland or Belgium. Two of the color quite similar species
Iris rosenbachiana 'Tovil Dara'
Iris galatica
-
Iris kuschakewiczii, maybe my best Juno Iris.
-
Iris kuschakewiczii, maybe my best Juno Iris.
An outstanding plant.
I hope I live long enough to see my plant fill a pot like yours.
-
I received this plant from Kot last year
Iris x graberiana 'Yellow Fall'

Iris aucheri 'Olof'- named by Gothenburg Botanic Garden from a KPPZ expedition collection from near Leylek
-
Wow - what a fabulous colour
-
This Iris magnifica 'Agalik', from Janis, has been in the open garden for a number of years and flowers reliably.
-
Currently blooming
-Iris tubergeniana
-Iris svetlanae
-Iris albomarginata
-
Lovely collection Ebbie
-
Are you watching David,? hope I have got the names correct.
Juno Iris graeberiana.
Juno Iris X morning sky x 2
-
I am Michael and they look a treat. Obviously very happy in their new home and probably getting much better care than they were putting up with previously. ;D
-
Lovely collection Ebbie
Thank you, David.
A slender Juno. I got it as "Iris spec. Afghanistan." Can anyone identify it please?
-
My first Juno - from Kurt Vickery seed sown 2009. I know this is the easiest of the group but I am still pleased. The references I have seen all give the colour as various shades of lilac including nearly white. I cannot see any trace of colour on this flower. Is there a form "Alba"?

Thank you David & Maggi.
I now need to find a suitable place in the garden for them. It doesn't look as if it will stand up to our Anglesey gales too well.

Hi,
Both these were transplanted into the garden after a fitful performance in a pot.
They're both in free draining soil and receive plenty of sun and loving the garden.
The magnfica alba is now up to 7 flowering stems and looks a picture,
Regards,
David

A lovely trio David.

Thanks David.
there seem to be no reason to torture these easier juno's in a pot when they grow so easily
in the open garden.
I can feel some more retail therapy on its way.
There are so many lovely forms of magnifica...

Iris cycloglossa from Jim Archibald 585.700. Sown December 2006. Much taller than he says in the seedlist. This one is 80cms. I have 6 so will try 4 in the garden and keep 2 in the frame as insurance.

a few late flowering Junos in my garden today . Lucky to have any flowers left as the local large white ,yellow crested cockatoos -a serious pest - attack any plant with showy flowers .
-
Two Junos in bloom now,
I. planifolia and a lovely Iris edomensis, which is a real challenge to grow but it worth every minute!
-
That's a new one for me! Wonderful!
-
Oron
The edomensis is spectacular and worth all the hard work involved.

Bravo Oron ! :) Seems that the season is early for you too !

:o :o :o What a stunning plant Oron ! Oh yes.......... Indeed, every effort worth. So there are indeed people who are able to grow this fantastic beauty. Can you tell us something about those efforts ?

Oron,
Your Iris edomensis is a real beauty!
Spoilt but worthwhile.

Thanks everyone,
Kris,
Out of all the Iris SP. i grow i find I. edomensis the most difficult one.
Starting from the soil, i have tried all sorts of mixes to create a well drainage mix that still keep a little amount of humidity but failed each time as plants just rotted in a very short time. Than i have tried all sizes of terracotta pots the larger contained too much humidity and the smaller dried out too quick.
After few seasons i have found that using the natural soil which is Loess soil, the common soil in the deserts around here, it is quite chalky so i mix it with extra gravel using small terracotta pots [15cm] then plunge the pot in sand.
This species need as many hours of sun possible and will not tolerate even the smallest amount of extra water therefor when ever rain comes i need to take the pots out to a shelter where it stays dry.
Also, i spray it quite often with fungicide as i do with all my Oncos. The leaves of this species are narrowly channeled there for water often remain trapped inside to cause leaf diseases and as they coil on the ground i put underneath them a little stone to isolate them from touching the humid soil. So its almost like rasing a pet with the difference that this one doesn't bark when it need something...

Thanks for this information Oron , I appreciate ! I don't grow this species at home , but a bit of ambition is what we need sometimes ;D
I certainly can dream of it now ....
Very interesting method and maybe useful for other delicate species .
