Galanthus plicatus 'Mary Hely-Hutchinson'
-
Beautiful and perfect, Paddy!
-
Very nice colouring too :)
-
Brian, I did the colouring in myself - with crayons!
-
;D ;D
-
A real advent pleasure: Galanthus cilicicus is starting to bloom and will bring flowers until christmas!
-
Hello Paddy,
a proud flower and a good mark to remember!
Irland = Island of Emerald = green
-
I'm delighted with this one, Hagen, as it is the first time I have had it in the garden. And, as happens, I could not get this bulb in Ireland but was given on by a very kind lady in England so it is especially to be treasured.
-
Now, a little surprise from today. I picked a flower from G. 'Barnes' to bring into the heat of the house so it would open and I could photograph it. We went off for a walk and look what I found when I returned.
Galanthus 'Barnes'
-
Excuse my ignorance, Paddy - is 'Barnes' supposed to have four "bits"?

Only when grown in Ireland,Maggi :)
-
Only when grown in Ireland,Maggie :)
Aha! That's a bit of luck then!!! ;D ;)
-
It is the same with the Clover here Maggi. ;D ;D ;D
-
That I do know, Michael : Ian brought me a four leaved clover from Kilkenny many moons ago .... I 've always been sure they were all like that!
-
Excuse my ignorance, Paddy - is 'Barnes' supposed to have four "bits"?
You have the sharp eyes, Maggi. That was the surprise - four inner and four outer segments, a nice little surprise.
-
Very pretty. 8)
-
Great to see Paddy, a very nice surprise :D. Would even be better when you have this surprise every year :o.
Wishes, wishes.......
-
I found this in a G.elwesii-delivery from the netherlands. :)
-
You can make that smile much bigger Uwe ;D !! Great snowdrop, hope it will develope well for you.
-
in this delivery are some autumn blooming flowers and this is part of it. :D There are still some in bud and I hope for more ;D
-
What a nice surprise amongst the other snowdrops Uwe, let's hope it increases well for you as it will make a nice clump.
-
Lovely plant, Uwe.
-
Uwe, best start bulb for a collection of autumn flowering galanthus. Gratulations!
-
Many thanks, but unfortunately i'm not a real friend of autumn flowering galanthus ???
But maybe I'll still 8) ;D
-
So give them a cold place outside with a lot of frost. So they cannot come out, because the ground is frozen. Then all galanthus will bloom at the same time - your spring time!!!
-
In Uwe's picture, the green area on the outer petals is somewhat shrunken compared to the white part of the petal. One sometimes sees this on snowdrops with green markings on the outer petals although by no means in every case. I'm just wondering if there is a technical term to describe this feature?
-
Some pictures of last weekend. No weather to be in the garden now, heavy wind overhere :-\.
Elwesii Barnes
Elwesii ex Broadleigh Gardens
Reg Olg Eleni
Santa Claus
Gabriel
-
And two more...
Remember Remember
Elwesii Howard Wheeler
Howard Wheeler is just 2 two weeks later as last year. But this year I noticed some green tips on the outers.
-
Glad Eleni is doing well Richard, Remember Remember looks great.
-
Melvyn, I think Reg Olg Eleni is one of the better Reg Olg's, with good strong large flowers.
Remember Remember is one of my favourites, large flowers. And a tall snowdrop.
-
Melvyn, I think Reg Olg Eleni is one of the better Reg Olg's, with good strong large flowers.
I am glad you think Eleni is one of the better G.r-o's. Its can be difficult deciding whether or not a seedling has sufficient merit to be selected for further attention. The plant shown is a case in point, nothing extraordinary about the flowers but very robust with eleven flowers from an 8cm square pot. Some of you will know that I think fragrance is a very important feature, when I brought this plant in from the cold frame today my wife immediately commented that she could smell its perfume from some distance. So will I give it further appraisal, probably yes, at least for another flowering season.
-
Another G.r-o photographed today, nice markings but only on the largest, most mature, flower, it will be kept to see how it performs next year.
-

It looks very promising Melvyn ! I hope that this interesting feature comes back on al the flowers.

Fragrance is often forgotten but can be an interesting feature to . And it looks very floriferous to !
-
it continues with autumn flowering G.elwesii with many green
on the outer petals 8) :D
-
Uwe, you will have green christmas feelings :)
Looks very exciting!

The fragrance is even reaching me here and is wonderful!!!
Even without the fragrance I am taken by the length and elegance of the outer segments.
-
It seems you bought some good bulbs Uwe, I am looking forward to see the flowers when they are open :)
The new ones look great Melvyn, specially the one with the long outher segments. If the flowers are as robust as from
Eleni, this will be a Reg Olg to looking forward to, to grow. :D
-
My clump of regiae-olgae, first hhown a month ago - slightly bend today because of temperatures around zero.
They get overhead protection, -7C was the coldest morning this season!
-
Galanthus reginae-olgae Stavroula, much smaller flower than most selections
-
In yesterday's sunshine;
-
Beautiful plants Steve........'Sheds and Outhouses' :o thats one to look out for.Is it always this early?.
-
First time it's flowered for me Steve, so we'll see. Really keen on the varieties that flower before Christmas and working with their seedlings to extend the range.
-
I would love to see a collection dedicated to pre-Xmas snowdrops; it would be like having a sneak preview of the main event.
-
Two forms of Galanthus cilicicus
-
Very refined inner mark on that one from Nutt.
-
Very nice G.cilicicus Tony, I agree with Brian, the second one has particularly nice markings.
-
Galanthus 'Barnes'
-
Lots of noses up in the garden and in pots. snogerupii and elwesii Haydn now flowering. I also must look for more autumn flowering and pre Christmas flowering cultivars to extend the season backwards
Quite strange that about half by elwesii Barnes are over, some are perfect and a few have only just come up
-
Lovely weather yesterday and Remember Remember was fully open.
I like the second G.cilicicus also Tony, great inner mark.
-
Just noticed today I now have three Peter Gatehouse
-
Hooray. That's 50% growth isn't it, Mark?
-

Alan yes 50% increase over many years.
Rudi are you forcing Three Ships? No sign of mine

Bit off topic but .......I have been asked to a second interview for the job I'm trying for :D happy happy joy joy .

Best news I've had all week, Emma - well done - now you just have to "sock it to 'em one more time"!!
-
I will !
-
Wonderful Emma, very best of luck.
-
Rudi are you forcing Three Ships?
Possibly that extra warmth from an array of beeswax candles, you mean?
And well done Emma.
-
Yes Alan.
Gardening job Emma? Good luck
-
Very mild weather here and several are showing in the garden. G. elw.'Barnes' is in flower as is G. elw Hiemalis, 'Peter Gatehouse' is up but has always been a misery-guts with me. 'Three Ships' is well up , showing white and 'Castlegar' has done its annual trick of suddenly appearing well above ground where there was no sign of it the day before.
-
Yes they are shooting up here too Paddy, counted over 200 today.
-
But also under glass they are feeling the warm weather and are coming to look over the ground ;D.
-
Yes they are shooting up here too Paddy, counted over 200 today.
Stop upsetting me, Brian!
-
Stop upsetting me, Brian!
Well it's not often that I am not far behind everyone else so must make the most of it ;)
-
Enjoy it all.
-
Today there was some sunshine - G. elwesii monostictus and G. cilicicus. :)
-
Beautiful picture Hans, it is very nice to see snowdrops in this set up.
-
Hans what is the green tipped snowdrop?
-
My Peter Gatehouse is now 5! One bulb is a tight group of three so I'm assuming a Narcissus fly may have partially eaten a bulb
-
Not necessarily, Mark. The offsets tend to stay close to the parent bulb.
-
Warm day, G. elwesii 'Barnes' opening.
-
I have posted pictures of this snowdrop in the past and the file name reflects what forumists have suggested as a possible name(s). It is in flower now in Victoria, BC. Looking at Paddy's shot of 'Barnes' with iosceles-sided marks I wonder if this rules out Barnes for Carol's plant as her flowers have inverted U marks . A friend of hers has declared it a hybrid without even having seen the plant, mainly because of the single mark!
Hard to say if all the shoots in the picture are the same plants.
john
-
Here now a update from my elwesii-find ( reply 17).
Today it was warm and sunny and this sowdrop showed its full Beauty :D :
-
Glückskind!
-
We wait and watch to see that it lives up to its Christmassy name. Galanthus 'Three Ships' today.
-
John, here is Galanthus elwesii Hiemalis Group in flower today.
-
Great find, Uwe!
Where are you gardening?
Paddy, your Hiemalis Group ones are of good shape. Mine have rather narrow outers and are still closed.
-
Paddy, Your photographs of snowdrops are absolutely breathtaking. Do you have any special techniques that you would like to pass on. It seems like you must lie flat on the ground to get such a perfect angle.
Nothing to photograph here as we just had our fourth snowstorm before Christmas and the temperatures are in the low 30s and 20s, that's Fahrenheit, all very unusual for us in the generally mild mid-Atlantic US. A customer wanted to know if a particular snowdrop was blooming, and I dug down through the snow and ice to discover a nice white bud but no flower.
-
Paddy, your THREE SHIPS are the best sign, that christmas is coming. A good news!!!
Here they ring also :).
-
John the point of the Hiemelis group is that there are lots of rather similar elwesiis that flower about now (well here anyway) that don't have names. Unless you have very good reason to suppose that snowdrop is a named cultivar then in all probability it isn't. Barnes has a heart-shaped mark (inverted).
-
Thomas, Yes, these are well-shaped and good to grow but I don't think they are especially different from many others except they flower early.
Carolyn, yes, I have a wet and dirty tummy very often. I like to photograph from this angle so as to see the markings as well as the whole plant.
Hagen, we have warm days at present so the Three Ships should open sails for Christmas though G. 'Castlegar' is the one I watch for before Christmas and it is not quite as well up as Three Ships.
-
Thanks Alan, I'll pass this on to Carol.
john
-
John, just to prove that I am not talking out of my hat, here are two different nameless elwesiis flowering in my garden yesterday.
-
I seem to have a G. rizehensis out in flower from last Wednesday. Does that seem early?
-
From my recollection of past posts of G. rizehensis flowering , I think that around third week of January seemed about average - yours must be keen!
Are you seeing early growth in other spring bulbs?
-
I seem to have a G. rizehensis out in flower from last Wednesday. Does that seem early?
It does to me, mine are barely through outside!
-
Does anyone know what elwesii Rowallane is supposed to look like? Mine bought in 2011 and flowering for the first time looks like G. elwesii Hiemalis Group
-
Photo of Rowallane and note from Paddy T. that the pic is not right, here : https://www.facebook.com/rhsihome/posts/305179349604825 (https://www.facebook.com/rhsihome/posts/305179349604825) it does look quite like the one you showed here : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8695.msg235830#msg235830 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8695.msg235830#msg235830) as not being Rowallane. :-\
Quote from Paddy : "The photograph (on RHSI) does not match the description - Very bold grey foliage, distinct difference between enclosed and enclosing leaf with latter much wider. Flowers puckered, rounded outer segments. Inner segment very distinct - top heavy X mark with basal portion filled in with small thin legs legs above the sinus notch. I haven't seen it for sale."
-
Thanks Maggi. I don't have a record of where I photographed the one with the tiny dots and cant remember where I got mine which is also wrong - big sigh.
-
The "wrong" one with the tiny dots is cute though, isn't it?
-
It does to me, mine are barely through outside!
Interesting. I have two clones. The second clone isn't even showing. I will get a photo if it stops raining! I can be certain it is the correct
species.
-
A couple of rubbish photos from today.
elwesii 'Haydn' with a turned back spathe. Both flowers in a pot in the plunge have the same shaped spathe.
snogerupii with a marking that looks too small. All three flowers are the same
-
Hans what is the green tipped snowdrop?
Hello Mark, the green tipped is not named (as I know) - first picture show it again. Then 'Smaragdsplitter' and 'Sheds and Outhouses'.
Last picture shows a group of other Galanthus elwesii monostictus growing next to Stipa gigantea and a few selfsown Oncocyclusiris.
All Galanthus flower this year about one month later than normal because of the warm and dry autumn.
-
Hello Mark, the green tipped is not named (as I know) - first picture show it again. Then 'Smaragdsplitter' and 'Sheds and Outhouses'.
Well Hans , I think they are all good to have flowering at this time of the year. My ( new) 'Smaragdsplitter' is without green on the outers this year, so I look forward to next Autumn when I hope it will have settled down.
-
Good selection of plants Hans
-
Magnificent plants, Hans!
I suspect that plants similar to this (gem1.2-Smaragdsplitter.jpg) can be periclinal chimeras. You tried to do chips of the such?
-
This weekend I found this great snowdrop from Ru flowering, Emerald Bells ;D. A real beauty !!!!!!
Congratulations with this find Ru.
And a happy Christmas for all of you :D
-
!!!I'm very glad!!!
It was the real gift by Christmas! ! !
-
wow that must be the best virescent snowdrop - ever
-
Wow, very beautyful. Is even more green possible? :o
-
That is a stunner Richard!
-
It's a fantastic snowdrop but more of an inverse poculiform than a conventional virescent type.
-
Yes, here two genes of "inverse poculiform" and a gene (genes) "completely green internal petal" very successfully work.
-
Is it one that you have deliberately bred then Ru?
-
No, it was the lucky find. But nearby some hybrids with it grew. I had opportunity to see and draw certain conclusions.
-
A lucky find indeed Ru, congratulations!
Nature is the best breeder ;D
-
Thanks! I wait for blossoming of snowdrops, with impatience. This year much more trips are planned. And not less than 5 species for search.
-
now today ( after a long time silence ) some pics from here :
Galanthus snogerupii ( ex Glen Chantry )
Galanthus fosterii
Galanthus cilicicus
Galanthus elwesii v. monostictus
After the horrible last winter year where so many snowdrops are died but have I received from some nice friends a replacement ...I'm now more carefully and so I grow all this tender snowdrops in pots in my greenhouse ( if it is warm enough so I take the trays outside )
Today is it unusual warm here ...we have 15° with some sun and a lot of wind
My best wishes for all snowdrop friends for a Merry Christmas :D
...and maybe St.Claus will bring you a lot of new plants

Lovely to see you posting your snowdrops again, Hans. I was delighted to see 'Hans Guck in de Luft' showing in the garden yesterday.

I can understand your feelings Ru.
You are happy.
Goes together with Christmas!!!
-
Here now my next elwesii- find ( reply 34) in flower :D
-
Quite unusual, if they are in flower right now in central Europe and not in a greenhouse.
-
Maybe it's the warm weather????
-
Morning Uwe,
I agree with Thomas.
Such a lot of green inside is very unusual. At this time of the year.
You should protect the plant very good, if it is in the open garden.
-
A lovely plant, Uwe
-
Is that still " monostictus" or already " ssp. elwesii " ?
It is potted and outdoor.
-
Uwe, great snowdrop again. You are very Lucky :o to find all those in your bulbs.
Please keep in mind that when it starts freezing that you move the pots in a cold shed. It would be waste when the pots and bulbs would get totally frozen.
I lost several cultivars in the winter of 2011, and they were planted into the ground, not in pots. All totally black frozen :-[.
We had no snow and is was freezing - 21 degrees, and the sun was shinning during daytime, with a little wind.
-
Nobody can give you an answer, Uwe. It can be monostictus, and I think so. But it can be also elewesii var. elwesii.
Normally the monostictus start to bloom. All early elwesii are monostictus, as long as I know.
Your plant has whole green inner segments. I would think it is a big apical mark and not the result of apical and basal mark together.
Ich würde denken, das viele innere Grün kommt von einem vergrößerten Hufeisen und nicht vom Verschmelzen von apicaler und basaler Markierung.
-
Many thanks to all. I will protect the plant when it freezes strongly and i plant out in spring.
Still 2 Elwesii with green come in a few days to flowering. :D
-
Great snowdrops Uwe!
All early elwesii are monostictus, as long as I know.
Hagen, seems there are always exceptions of a rule, here is actually a nice one in flower, as all Galanthus are very late this year I checked some pictures to know when it flowers in a normal season, it was Beginning of December last year.
-
Hello Hans,
your garden is a little more in the south, so you should have also the Gee some days/weeks earlier. I also have a few Gees, flowering today in the glasshouse. But all your other very noble galanthus (elwesii) ;), you showed us in December were "only" Gems, I think.
If you have too much of them....
How do you think about Uwes find?
-
Galanthus 'Castlegar' on December 29th
-
Lovely to have those marks so early on a snowdrop Uwe, a lucky find indeed.
Great to see your Castlegar in bloom Paddy, mine, of course, is way behind ;)
-
You always show us the best group pictures, Paddy.
The much green is coming from the pic?
-
Nice group of Castlegar Paddy, mine are just showing like Brian's.
Uwe, you still have a few to come with green on the outers...... :), please post pictures when they flower. Always good to see
snowdrops with green on the outers.
-

If you have too much of them....
How do you think about Uwes find?
You are right, Hagen - as my garden is more in the south than those of most Galanthusgrower in the forum, the climatical conditions are different - normally they start to flower later and stop to flower earlier because of the heat.
A few years ago I bought several pots with flowering Galanthus elwesii, mainly var. monostictus as I knew they flower earlier than var. elwesii. Think I have lost most of the var elwesii as normally growing period is to short for them here, while var. monostictus grows well and produce seedlings, unfortunately the most beautiful ones (mostly gifts) increase very slowly - hope by sowing seeds of them I will get some nice profilic plants with a lot of green which are adapted to the mediterranean conditions.
Uwes plants are very promising, they have to be observed the following years if the tips are stable. My experience: The better the conditions the better the green. Cold winter may not help very much the early ones.
-
No exotics I am afraid but a nice clump of Three Ships
-
That's a fantastic display. Calling those snowdrops a clump is like calling a forest a copse.
-
Hello John,
very nice clump of Three Ships. I hope in few years i have also those clump of variuos snowdrops. I'm still a beginner.
-
That's a fantastic display. Calling those snowdrops a clump is like calling a forest a copse.
I was just thinking the same. :)
Really nice view! Like Uwe I'm a beginner but maybe someday I can see a lot of snowdrops in my garden, too. Though here it will be April when the snowdrops flower.
-
I was just wondering if anyone had an idea what this G. elwesii could be flowering now?
Sorry about the photo quality..getting a tad dark.
Glorious clump of Three Ships, John
-
Hello all, thanks to everyone for posting the snowdrop pictures ours are just beginning despite the wettest December, this is the last day of the year so Very Best wishes to all may your snowdrops grow in abundance, cheers Ian the Christie
-
The last day of December 2013! I do wish everyone lost of good snowdrops and all the best for 2014.
Last pic of 2013; one of the first wild plicatusses flowering today! From a wellknown person from the east ;D
-
This weekend I found this great snowdrop from Ru flowering, Emerald Bells ;D. A real beauty !!!!!!
Congratulations with this find Ru.
And a happy Christmas for all of you :D
Can we give thumbs up, like on facebook for this one??? ;D
