Ian,
In the frit picture, a number of labels are bent over. What does that signify?
-
Don't worry Ian, here in Hungary, a country with "more stable continental climates" in the last 2-3 years the weather changed very quickly too, many times. This summer for example, after a few weeks of 37-38°C, instantly we found us in 18-19°C from a day to another. This is not normal here, I think, and in the past there were very few examples of such changes, but now there are more and more, there is happening something with the climate indeed.

Diane, the labels that are at right angles are labels which have been bent that way to allow the details to be easily read... it is a requirement of our shows that plants bear a horizontal label. One of the joys of our labels made from recycled venetian blind material is the ease with which this can be acheived.

Kathrine, when Ian gets back from a trip to Pitlochry, where it was pouring with rain, he will be find out that you have your own climate troubles as well as ours on the continent!
-
Diane, Maggi has already explained the reason for the bent over labels.
Kathrine, we all seem to suffer from the swings in temperature. I am always complaining about the difficulties of growing bulbs in our Scottish climate.
I am really very glad we have a moderate climate which allows us to grow such a wide range of plants.
I just wish I could grow the bulbs so the looked as they do in the wild but that is an unrealistic expectation - also they do not always grow to perfection in the wild.

Ian - I'm not sure about that 'extended bract'. (It is actually a cataphyll,) the sudden, rapid growth is often a sign of ill health. I have a couple of plants like this each year and from memory they usually rot at the crown of the corm during the season. Common sense suggests early removal might be best - time often determines otherwise. Next day off work I'll take a close look at this years suspects and report my findings.
