Post by: johnw on March 16, 2013, 07:22:43 PM
Does anyone know of a North American source for Hercules?

Thanks John.  Funny that link mentions getting it at Western Hills 25 years ago.  In fact I was at Western Hills  - superb nursery by the way - 25 years ago last month.  Guess we are slightly behind the times out here.

I have a clump growing in a 7-gal pot that is not happy.  It blooms but is stunted, in the greenhosue right now and outdoors in the lath house in summer.  Good luck!

Hi John,

A few years back www.tropic.ca (http://www.tropic.ca) carried it. It looks like they have shifted their focus a bit. They might still have a couple around though just not on catalogue. I have never ordered anything from them and don't know anyone who has.

It is propagated in Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco. You can tell it apart form the others by the large size and the  spots on the leaves.

Thanks all.  Robert - I have ordered from Tropic to Tropics before.  Ray, the owner, has a very interesting collection and the nursery is well worth a visit.  I remember a form of Liriodendron chinensis that he had, the leaves were so big for scale we photographed it on a friend's shoulders & back which it covered completely.
