Just had a note from Tim Loe re the BIS Species Iris Group Oncocyclus special bulletin reprint. A number of possibilities as to the content and format of the reprint to be decided.
Tim also mentioned his Onco Iris Day on 10th May. Oh if only I was a whole lot closer!!!

Pat, can you give a bit more detail and explanation for those of us not "in the know" about such things..... I.E. What is the BIS ?
Talk of a leaflet... only available to members or to other interested parties? If so, where to apply ( those details to come later, I presume, if the matter is under discussion now)
Who is Tim Loe, please?
Where is he... and is this Iris day again a Open Day for the members of a society or an OPEN Open Day??
Thanks, M
-
BIS = British Iris Society. Not sure about the other stuff.
-
Uhm I have been lax in giving details haven't I?
Yes BIS is the British Iris Society - there is a group within that group that is interested in species irises.
The Spring Bulletin 2007 of the specialist species group was a special publication on Oncocyclus which was full of information and colour - reprint of most of the oncocyclus articles in past BIS Yearbooks. Articles on oncocyclus irises in their native habitat.
Tim Loe is the editor of this publication plus he is a nurseryman who supplies many bulbous plants - he has a fabulous catalogue of rare bulbs.

I had asked Tim if he could republish the bulletin as there is many members of the ASI who would buy a copy. There is now decisions to be made whether to republish as is; add more articles and improve the quality of the prints and publish as a soft cover or hard cover.
As to the Open Day I am not sure now whether it is open to the public or only to the BIS members. Uhm I had presumed (should never do that!) that it would be open to all.
I think I have answered all.

Fab, Pat, thank you! :-*

-
Many Thank's Pat,
and for sure I'm very interested in :) :)
Does he have a web site for bulbs ??
-
Thanks Pat,
very interesting information - if it should be an 'open' Open day - do you know where it will be? In Launceston, Cornwall ?
-
I have just received a catalogue from Westonbirt Plants and with it Tony Dickerson enclosed a poster advertising a BIS Species Group day entitled 'Oncocyclus - From Israel to Japan'. This is on Sunday 10 May at WISLEY GARDENS in Surrey. It is open to all and tickets, for non-members, are £12 from tonydickerson@rhs.org.uk.
I can give a little more information from the poster if you wish but would suggest that an e-mail to Tony would be better.
-
David, thanks a lot for this info. :D
-
It must be very interesting as Jim Archibald and Ori Fragman Sapir will make some lectures...
Note: OF COURSE Thomas Fietz!!! as well
-
This is it:

What a day that would be!!! If only there was not quite so much water and land between!

Same problem to me, quite far from me... but what a privileged trio of botanical explorers! dam! I can't go :-\
-
It is far away ::) - but not far enough ... ;D ;)

Depending o how the flights go distance is relative.
Living close to an airport has its advantages.
Do not know if there is a airport close to Wesley?
Hope You enjoy such a wonderfull day
All the best and hope You all make great buings that will later be seen by us. :) 8)
Kind regards

I contacted Tony re videoing the proceedings - same as most societies in that it is too hard to get volunteers for different jobs but the idea has been taken on board.

I thought I'd bump this thread in the hope that anyone at Wisley today will share some pics.
-
Rob I sure hope there will be photos from the day too.
-
Just can tell it was a fantastic event - Tim Loe and Tony Dickerson made a fgreat job in organizing this very special day - the speaker Thomas Fietz, Ori Fragman and Jim Archibald showed wonderful pictures of Oncos in nature and as every speaker treated different regions and focuses it was very interesting all the time. The display table could not be occupied better than by Brian Mathew - but there were so many more person who did a great work.
As it had to be, the time was to short for all the talks, and i was very happy to know some forumist personally - and I am sure many more who could not come would have enjoyed it! And i was pleased to see now a minim of 4 forum members contributed articels in the reprint of the Oncocyclus special of the species group of the BIS ;D
The only bad thing - in all this excitement I forgot totally to take any picture. :-\
-
Hells bells Hans!!!
I know the feeling of coming home after an event and realising that I had forgotten to take photos.
NOw lets hope Thomas or ..... took photos.
By the way what was the cost of the reprint of the ONCO bulletin?
-
Shame on you hans ;D ;D
-
:'( :'( :'( ;)
-
Sorry :-[ hope next time i will not forget to take pics - maybe some of the other forumist took photos ::)
Pat, the Onco bulletin was sold for about (very well spent) 10 pounds at this event.
-
Could somebody tell me where the reprint of the Onco bulletin might be obtained ?? ???
-
I have contact Tim Loe but am awaiting a reply to that question Luc.
I will contact Tony Dickerson as well now.
-
The Oncocyclus Bulletin put out by the BIS Species Group is now in book form, better quality photos and more text.
Tim contacted me with the details. See below. Each book is 9.95 pounds each. Any person interested in a copy might like to contact Tim.
The Onco. Special is selling well and being enjoyed.
The airmail shipping (USA or Australia) cost for the book would be £3.85 per copy.
Total would be £13.80. I think if people want to pay with Paypal the price will be £14 since we have to pay a charge. Also we can accept credit card payment.
Perhaps a batch could be ordered and sent to you that would keep the cost down. For instance ten copies for £99.50 would cost £29 to send. But we would prefer just one payment it would make things easy this end.
