Title: Shortia soldanelloides 'Askival Iceberg'
Post by: jomowi on July 04, 2007, 08:36:56 PM
Does anyone know where I can get plants or cutting material of Shortias “Askival Iceberg” and “Askival Sunrise’?  Both of these were originally raised by the Mike and Poly Stone but they no longer are at Askival.  According to the “Plant Finder” the two varieties have not been offered for several years.

Obviously I can't help with that one Brian but can you tell me where are the Stones are now? I knew they were not writing/propagating as before but never imagined they'd leave that fabulous place. Are they still alpine gardening? I have a friend who had an incredible collection of alpines yet almost on a whim gave the whole lot away (well, sold them actually) and went golfing and travelling instead. How can anyone so totally immersed in their plants suddenly turn off like that? It will happen to me on the day I die.

Mike and Polly have moved to (Southern) Ireland, where they have had a house built in a nice tract of land. Haven't heard from them for a while, so I assume they are up to their ears in their new garden!

Thanks Maggi. I only met them once, at Askival so don't know them at all but I do miss "The Stone Column" in the Journal. (Perhaps Mark or someone could start a "Hypertufa Column" :?) I remember Ranuculus seguieri in one of their troughs and have pined for it ever since.

A friend is searching for a plant, or propagation material from this plant.
Shortia soldanelloides 'Askival Iceberg' was awarded an AM from the RHS Joint Rock Committee in 1990 but seems to be unavailable now.
He is also interested in sourcing Shortia 'Askival Sunrise'.

Can anyone help?

Try contacting John Owen at Askival.

Hi,

if you know where you can get them could you let me know too?

There was already a question about it on the forum.

Quite correct, Wim, I have merged the two topics!
