Orchis mascula site 2012
« on: April 30, 2012, 05:37:33 PM »
The weather finally dried up so off we went to check on the Orchis mascula ( Early Purple Orchid) site.
As expected many the Orchids were flowering well.

All photos are thumbnails, please click on them to get the full sized ( in focus) view

349505-1

Also to be noted are the other Orchids growing alongside the O. mascula, they are yet to flower but from the leaf I am thinking we have Dactylorhiza fuchsii.

349507-2

349509-3

The O. mascula seem to be having a vintage year, the older plants having huge leaves.

Wonderful pictures, Fred.

Would you allow me to use one of them in my lecture on Orchids of the British Isles? I won't be offended if you say no. :) :) :)

Visited a new site in sunny Lincolnshire today and spent a happy hour or two wading through mud and early purples.  Some of interest;
A couple of nice whites
A giant of nearly two feet tall
and an "arty" shot of EPO's and bluebells

Same site six weeks later.

Dactylorhiza fuchsii has now taken over there are also some very tall plants flower buds still unopened with huge leaves.
Some Orchis mascula have late flowers just going over, so I assume there is a chance of hybrids.
Will need to visit yet again  ;D
