the plant has  been identified by Ezeiza as Pyrolirion albicans

Hmmmm... I don't think I've ever even heard of Pyrolirion before, unless it was mentioned in these forums somewhere?  Thanks Alessandro (and Alberto!).

and according to the IPNI, it used to be called Leucothauma albicans. I would have put in the link but it spanned 7 lines.

Hi Paul:

           These bulbs are exceedingly rare in cultivation. They are like hot desert Zephyranthes with the main feature that the stigma branches are spoon shaped.

            And this may be the first time a picture of Pyrolirion albicans is seen.

The vermillion form of Pyrolirion tubiflorum is stunning. Sort of "Satan red" shade. It has been in cultivation on several occasions and offset like mad but it is difficult to keep it going with the right temperatures and after a few years they dwindle away.

Normally, they flower the first year only.

If they like hot desert conditions when they'll probably like your Aril beds.
