David Douglas in Hawaii
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:42:32 PM »
The story of David Douglas' untimely demise in Hawaii in 1834 is well known, but the actual location of his last day in the field is rather obscure.  I recently came across an episode of a television travel show that features a trip to locate the monument that marks the location of the cattle pit in which Douglas met his end.  You can find the video on the web at http://openroad.tv/video.php?vid=213

If anyone has been there it would be interesting to see photos as well.  I have not been there myself but it appears from the references I can find that the monument is located near the place of Hopuwai on the north side of the Big Island.  If you use Google Earth you can find the approximate location by plugging in the following coordinates: lat. 19°50'57.48"N,  long 155°20'8.20"W.
