Scilla?
« on: October 04, 2009, 06:18:52 PM »
This tiny bulbous plant is grown from wild seeds I collected in Malta some years ago. The flower is about 5 mm.
Can anybody identify that plant?

It is Scilla autumnalis = Prospero autumnale,
Your plant is particularly small but still normal for this species.
This species is quite variable in size and form of the inflorescence in the different habitats through all the Mediterranean.

Thank you Oron. It is so different from the form of Scilla autumnalis that I grow (photo below), so I thought that it must be a different species. In the meantime I have found a website describing wild plants from Maltahttp://www.maltawildplants.com/LILI/Scilla_autumnalis.html. And there is no doubt. This is my plant.

Poul,

They're both beautiful, be it the white or the mauve.  Must try to track this down here in Aus.  Would be lovely to have an autumn flowering Scilla that looks like that.  Very nice.... thanks for sharing.
Cheers.

A very cute little species, and yes, different from the "usual" S. autumnalis.
