the next is a plant without a ID - I have grown this plant from seed ( sowing 2003 )
I have seen this plant in a garden on my way to work and I was surprised that I have asked the people for this plant -but they dont know not a name - only it is a very old plant ....this people was very friendly and promise me some seeds later ....after some weeks they gave me some seeds - but I had no idea what to do ....so I have sow it in spring 2003 similar like my cacti ....here is the result !

If anybody has a idea which species of Scadoxus this is I would be glad !

I have some plants more from Scadoxus - mostly all grown from seeds .
In this time I have this both flowering plants.

Hans, having looked at the PBS Wiki your plant looks to me to be very similar to Scadoxus multiflorus ssp. katherinae

The only what I know is that this plants are self fertil -my S.multiflorus are always steril ( maybe because they bougth bulbs )

I have two ideas :
1. this is a S. mult. katerinae
2. the plant from where this seeds comes is a hybrid ( may be Koenig Albert ) -this is a old german cross between S.magnificus ( = S.puniceus ) and S.mult.katerinae ....and the seeds are now backcrosses ....

I have such a plant KOENIG ALBERT ....but until no flowers .....

Hans,

Cool to see Scadoxus flowering for you, as one of my S. puniceus magnificus has got a scape just emerging from the top at the moment.  A tad too early, but our seasons are all mess up this year.  Watching the shoot emerge is just so cool...... nothing else I've come across looks quite like this.  Friends have commented on it when they've seen it this week.  :o ;D

So it'll be a few weeks now before it flowers, and that of course depends on what happens with our temperatures now that winter has actually finally arrived.  ::)

Well, that is a possiblity, but perhaps I will be better to just stay here in the cold North East of Scotland  ;) With our weather here right now it would be a hard life for a Scadoxus inside the home, never mind in the garden!! :o

Hans - Bananas even in Nova Scotia.  Here is Musa basjoo in a friend's garden, the second year out with massive applications of manure - directly over Neil's head - no Leslie, that's not a ceremonial headdress. Got huge the next year with only chicken wire and a few oak leaves tucked round the trunk and copious mulching. The Gunneras get a generous mulching with straw for the winter. By the way, not many alpines in his garden.
