Portugal 9th-16th march
« on: March 21, 2019, 02:18:30 PM »
We had a week in Portugal where with a great deal of help from two members of the Forum we were able to see a wide range of flowers some in huge numbers.

We started at Sao Martinho de Porto where

Narcissus bulbocodium ssp obesus
Fritillaria lusitanica and
Arum sp were growing on the cliffs . Whilst staying there we visited a limestone area with lots of orchids and
Narcissus calcicola

We then moved on for the rest of the trip to Serra da Estrela a granite area.
On the way up we found small numbers of
Narcissus rupicola
Narcissus bulbocodium ssp nivalis
Much higher we found
Narcissus asturiensis  and Crocus carpetanus in thousands

Finally over the far side of the Serra da Esrella in the Mondego Valley we found

Narcissus triandrus and just two

Narcissus scaberulus

We had been told it was an early spring and we would be fortunate to see any narcissus but I am pleased to say they were there in countless numbers

Lovely set of photos - seems you were lucky with both flowers and the weather, Tony!

yes the weather was perfect not a cloud in the sky and about 20c all week.

It would not have been possible to have had such a good trip without the help of Jaime and DaveM to whom we are very grateful.

Great to see the various narcissus Tony 8)
Your N. asturiensis are taller than I've seen in northern Spain, but presumably conditions account for at least some of that difference.

Ashley

they varied greatly from a couple of inches to nearly a foot. Some were on bare hillside and others in woodland so varied conditions
