Galanthus - December 2015
« on: December 01, 2015, 07:39:34 AM »
Always encouraging when a new acquisition turns out to be a vigorous doer in the garden  ;D.

'Bumble Green' which was sourced in February this year from Glen Chantry, has just emerged with two shoots. It is a beautiful drop that looks even better in a clump (looks like a swarm of bees) and additional shoots are very welcome.

I have attached a photo as a reminder of how good it looks in flower.

Or possibly in January at the Myddleton House sale?  I wasn't fast enough to get one there and I don't think they had any left after that.
Almost in Scotland.

There is a good biography of Margaret Owen in the December issue of 'The Plantsman' from RHS.  Written by Jim Almond it covers all her interests, not just galanthus!

here is a late November flowering galanthus. But it also blooms in early December.
Sometimes the most of the green is inside......

I have a number of forms of G. reginae olgae in flower at the moment, but this is the best of them and my favourite. I acquired it from Susan at Pitcairn Alpines and just love the strong, dark green mark and and slender outers.

Always a treat to see fantastic photos of Snowdrops. 'Bumble Green' is quite a fine looking December drop. And Hagen always shows terrific drops most of us have not seen before. And Matt, your G.r.o. is quite an elegant looker and I see how it would be a favorite. Amazing the range of forms and colors blooming in December....I do not think it has always been nearly this early with Snowdrops in trade.

Its been quite windy and rainy here, but I may have one to post when I can get a decent focus. Thanks all for your photo contributions....Rick

Just despatched a care parcel to some Iranian Galanthophile friends of my acquisition team, in response to a request:
3 X Freda Cox
2 X Naomi Slade
40 11cm Pond Pots
40 Bars Kendal Mint Cake

Who says Galanthophiles are barmy  ;D ;D ;D

Also hearing of some local drops with 'unusual green markings'... :o

Is the Kendal Mint Cake intended to nourish the galanthophiles or the galanthus?  :-\

I am reliably informed by my AT that individuals who run with heavy packs love them  ;D I don't run with anything heavy apart from bags of drops, which is just as well as I think KMC is vile  >:( >:(

Caught on camera today, in some fleeting thin sunshine, Three Ships.
Far too early!
Two flowers in its first year, and now 16 in its third year..
Nice shape, but a bit small. Petal length 27mm.

Some un-forecast Sunshine showed up around mid-day

Same clump of Three Ships

A gorgeous 'drop and a beautiful photograph with the sun falling on the flowers. Another for the wish list!
