Narcissus October 2015 in the Northern Hemisphere

Rather daunting though, at the star of the task, when you begin to contemplate the amount of compost needed etc..... we do put ourselves through the mill for this pleasure, don't we?

We put our selves through this because we love it. I can't think of a more enjoyable interest to have. Also the reward far out ways the initial hard work. I can't wait to see the first sign of growth. I have started to expand my areas of interest to stretch out the joys of new flowers and foliage.

For me, one of the best things about growing bulbs in pots is the exquisite pleasure that is best described as "pot-fondling" !!  This is the gentle stroking of plastic pots to feel their bulging sides with their  promise of a fine harvest of fat bulbs inside.     Bliss, just bliss!

Narcissus elegans. What has happened to N. malacitanus?

Yes! they have a very well scent!.

Anthony, N. malacitanus and N. elegans are the same species for most of people, although it has been published with this name. I tried to find any differences with other collections that I grow from Mallorca and Algeria. It seems to be very close to the Algerian plants.... (the real different plant from N. elegans, are the plants I grow from Mallorca) maybe the plants from Malaga are more robust with more flowers, I think this is because grow conditions. What ever it is, I think these plants from Malaga, should be very pure genetically as there aren't any other species with it, like in other localities.

Now a new batch of autumn flowers

1. + 2. Narcissus cavanillesii x viridiflorus - plant ex an artificial cross made by Prof. Theo Sanders, Essen
3. Narcissus tazetta x miniatus - continues to develope a  lot of flowers every year
4. Narcissus x perezlarae (miniatus x cavanillesii) - the larger and reliably flowering type
5. Narcissus x xanthochlorus - suspected of the same cross as no. 1. + 2. or  perhaps a paler version of N. viridiflorus
