Growing soldanella alpina from seeds?
« on: January 31, 2015, 05:30:00 PM »
Dear all,

I have received seeds of Soldanella alpina but the instructions I found are mostly for montana. I cannot find any specific instructions. Anyone who can help?

Regards

Corrado

I got seeds last year and I winter sowed them in vermiculite. Had a good germination.

Dear Jonna,

Did you keep them indoor or outdoor? Did you vernalise them in the fridge before sowing?

Soldanella alpina don't seem to need cold stratification, see here and here . Cold stratification may help since you can sometimes read that  it is needed. See Tom Clothier's site  :
Soldanella alpina, carpatica, montana, and pusilla, Sow at 18-22ºC (64-71ºF) for 2-4 wks, move to -4 to +4ºC (24-39ºF) for 4-6 wks, move to 5-12ºC (41-53ºF) for slow germination very slow-growing the first 2-3 years

I kept them outdoors, like I do with all the seeds of hardy plants. So I hardly ever need the fridge.

Thanks to you all!

After considerations about climate here and climate where the plants grow, the seeds have gone straight to their fridge in their paper bags for some cold dry storage.

Best,
