Zanthoxylum simulans
« on: November 16, 2014, 12:15:50 AM »

I promised this to Johnw a while ago and have just got around to taking some photos now. Please excuse the cluttered photographs, the thing is too heavy not to mention too spiky to move! Every time I touch it I end up bleeding. I hope this helps john.

Zanthoxylum simulans (flat spine prickly ash), about 7 or 8 years old now I think...

Close up of the leaves and developing fruit

Distinctive flat spines on the new growth

Spines are slowly engulfed by the bark as the tree grows.

Marvelous.   I'll submit an application to Rome for a pre-determination on my stigmata status.  ;)

John you're welcome to some viable seed if you like? I always get volunteers from seed dropping into the pot.

Jamus - That would be great.  I go through pecks of the dried Sichuan peppercorns and should be growing some fresh potent ones myself.
