fall blooming crocus vs colchicum
« on: October 24, 2014, 01:09:29 PM »
What are the distinguishing differences between these two groups?

Do fall blooming crocus always make their leaves in fall, or do some make them in spring?

None of the experts have answered here! However, Crocus and Colchicum belong to different families; Crocus is in the Iris family, the Iridaceae, and Colchicum is in the Colchicaceae, its own family.

Taxonomic Hierarchy: Colchicum.

Kingdom Plantae  – plantes, Planta, Vegetal, plants
     Subkingdom Viridaeplantae  – green plants
        Infrakingdom Streptophyta  – land plants
Division Tracheophyta  – vascular plants, tracheophytes
Subdivision Spermatophytina  – spermatophytes, seed plants, phanérogames
Infradivision Angiospermae  – flowering plants, angiosperms, plantas com flor, angiosperma, plantes à fleurs, angiospermes, plantes à fruits
                    Class Magnoliopsida
Superorder Lilianae  – monocots, monocotyledons, monocotylédones
                          Order Liliales
                             Family Colchicaceae
                                Genus Colchicum L. – colchicum

If you want to tell them apart easily - Colchicum have 6 stamens and Crocus have 3.

Hi, some of them do not make leaf growth till Spring, or at least well after flowering.
