Crocus scharojanii flavus - stolons?
« on: June 23, 2014, 06:25:35 AM »
When I was repotting my Crocus scharojanii flavus, I saw that buds were well developed. On the two biggest corms there are 3 and 4 side buds beside the main bud. Could these side-buds be stolons or is it 'just' the start of new corms.
Brian Mathew says that C. scharojanii subsp. lazicus has stolons. Could that be the same for C. scharojanii flavus?

Poul I suspect they are secondary buds and will form into cormlets rather than stolons - either way will reward you with a welcome increase of this beautiful crocus.

Well done for growing it so well.

Thank you Ian, I am glad they increase vegetatively as they have never set seeds for me. Maybe I need another clone.

Last year I pollinated C. valicola with pollen from C. scharojanii flavus and got some seeds. I am excited to see the first flowers of the seedlings in about 4 years.

C. scharojanii flavus are not making stolons. They are secondary buds. By the way, I observed stolons in seversl crocus species, but never in C. lazicus. May be my individuals (stock is very small) are different or growing conditions are not so good.
