Title: Glasgow SRGC Show, 5th May 2012
Post by: johnny-l on April 30, 2012, 11:55:18 PM
A big warm first hello and thank you to everyone involved in the forum who makes these postings possible especially Maggi, Ian and Fred.  The SRGC would be so much the poorer without the communicative embrace of this powerful but so effective medium.  Enough blether...it's time for toe dipping in the rock garden pool.
The West of Scotland group will hold its annual Show on Saturday, 5th May in the Milngavie Town Hall (next to the railway station) which is located in the northern suburbs of Glasgow about 7 miles from the city centre.
Staging: 7.30pm - 9.30pm (Friday); 8.15am - 9.30am (Saturday)
The Show will be open from 11.30am - 3.30pm.
Nurseries in attendance:

(Oops!  No idea what button I hit inadvertently.....Glasgow Show continued)
Nurseries in attendance:
Ardfearn
Hartside
Kevock
Rumbling Bridge.
+ club plant stall
Whilst the judging is in progress the tea-room will be accessible for light refreshments of coffee, tea, cakes and rolls. The bookstall will be in attendance and, if I can place this in the foyer, will be available to members before the Show opens. Anne Chambers will offer her usual selection of botanical cards; Glassford Sprunt his labels; Anne and Sandy Leven their wide range of club merchandise; surplus seed will be availble at nominal cost.

Before the advent of the Web the Shows were undoubtedly our Shop Windows to the world and to the public.  To a great extent they can still offer lots of opportunities to present the Club's case in person in a vital, palpable way but the exposure we gain from them is governed by the determination, relevance and extent of our own input.  So, while this little notice is a preamble to a wonderful occasion on Saturday, it is also a light reminder that there is no Show without Punch viz.
(a) We need plants for the show bench and the club plant stall.  Even if you are not currently an exhibitor why not cnsider it  for next year: an empty Shop window has nothing to Show.
(b) Ditto above for those who just wish to view. Benches groaning with rosulate violas, rare primulas and American fritillarias would be a diminished reality if no one turned up to admire them.  If you haven't been to the Milngavie Town Hall why not come along on Saturday - I can't promise you all or any of these beauties but there will be some cracking alpines displayed in one of our best, naturally lit Show halls.
See you there!

Looking forward to returning to the Glasgow Show after a break of several years... David & I had our possible Show plants out for inspection and are delighted to say we will have something to exhibit! Our challenge is that we can't carry as many plants as we would like due to David being publications manager - ah well not much longer now we trust. See you all on Saturday.

An interesting  feature  of the Glasgow show is the section for auriculas. The photo shows  the relatively  new variety The Caley -one of a range of plants named to  commemorate the bicentenary of the Royal  Caledonian Horticultural  Society in 2009. This one belongs to George Anderson the  president at the time but it has just dropped its flowers so will not make it along the M8 to Milngavie.

Not only is that quite stunning, but it seems to have a ridiculous number of flowers on it! ;D Is this another characteristic of the variety or the skill of the grower?

Today's show was of a very high standard both for the number  of plants and the quality. Several friends  from the north of England contributed to this though the Forrest medal went to Cyril Lafong  with his Daphne petraea in a 6 pan class that also took the Jubilee award. Show secretary John Lee announcd that this was Cyril's 43rd Forrest which equals the record  of the late Harold Esslemont. Cyril also won the Simpson Memorial trophy  for best orchid in show with a Dactylorrizha.
Janet and Jim Paterson took the Class 2 Buchanan rose bowl for 6 big pans in class 1.
George Young  took the Archibald rose bowl for 3 big pans in class 2 as well as a certificate of merit for his Helichrysum.
SdP took the Darling trophy for 3 rhododendrons in class 4 and shared the Crawfod silver challenge trophy for most first points in section 1 with Brian and Shelagh Smethurst-seen with their winning Celmisia in the grey leaved class

By jove, some great looking plants there, Stan. Congratulations to you and to the other exhibitors.
Good to see some chums "from the south" visiting and doing so well.

Fancy a Forrest going to a daphne in a six inch pot! Who says you have to have giant plants to win?!

Todays show was notable for the quality of the plants.  Quite a few exhibitors from South of the border were noted.

I only took a few pictures of the plants that stood out for me.  Stan and Sandy were busy clicking away so I am sure there will be lots to follow

1  A stunning Paeony cambesedessii
2  Anemone trulifolia.  A beautiful shade of blue with little silver dots at the end of the petals.  Thepicture cannot convey the purity of the colour.
3  Meconopsis delavayii  - M&H Taylor.  This was new to me.  Absolutely charming little plants about 25cms. high.  I want it !!!!!!!
4  Ramonda nathalia
5  Gentian Auculis from   I. Christie.  This plant seemed to glow

I had shown item 2 as a hepatica for some reason .  Wrong !!!!

Watt Russell took the Ian Donald Memorial trophy for the best Scottish native plant with his Paris.
Ian Kidman received the Joan Stead prize for the best Primula in show with P. bracteata.
Carol & David Shaw took the Don Stead Prize for most  points in the bulb classes.
Certificates of Merit also went to:
Alan Spencely for Paeonia cambessedesii
Margaret & Henry Taylor for Meconopsis delavayi
Cyril for Daphne calcicola, Trillium pusillum.
In section 2 there was also a tie for the most points shared by Richard Green  and the Sue Simpson/George Watt partnership.

I see we already have a pretty comprehensive view of the show but will add my penny worth. It was a good show on all accounts with plenty plants on display, plenty folk through the door, busy plant sales which seemed to do a roaring trade ...all of which meant that show secs John and Bill had plenty to smile about. I was amazed by the number of exhibitors from South of the border...the 3 lane M74 makes quite a difference to the journey now...we always have good support at Blackpool and Hexham from the Scots so its good to see the complement returned.
Pictures: Cyril Lafong had another stunning day , exhibiting a broad church of flowering plants at a very high standard to back up his formidable reputation so I will start with a selection from Cyril
Daphne petraea Forrest Medal
Androsace hirtella x cylindrica
Cypripedium 'Maria'...he also had an Award of Merit for another Cyp but my pic was poor however Ian Christies does it proud
Daphne calcicola
Lewisia cotyledon
Penstemon uintahensis
Trillium pusillum

The remainder will be in alphabetical order starting with Androsace
Androsace robusta breviscapa Lionel Clarkson
Androsace robusta purpurea Peter Hood...a little smasher
Androsace studiosorum 'Doksa' George Young
Androsace villosa Lionel Clarkson who also had
Androsace villosa taurica
Aquilegia canadensis nana John di Paola...if thats nana I wonder what size non nana is!!!
Asplenium trichomanes Shiela and Brian Smethurst
Bolax gummifera George Young...reading the label this morning is from a cutting taken in 1995, getting to the size where rather heavy to hump around, lives outside the year round in a sand plunge frame

Hibbertia procumbens from Sue Simpson and George Watt
Iris pumilla Sandy Leven...saw he was busy snapping away with the camera
Meconopsis delavayi from Henry and Margaret Taylor...a very much admired exhibit, sorry that the pictures are not better
Myosotis albosericea from Ian Kidman...was actually much more silvery than the picture shows

Garden visit over time to rest the legs so will continue with my last pictures
Paenia cambessedesii Alan Spenceley....got a Certificate of Merit....Betty Ivey was wowwed by this I gather
Paris quadrifolia from Watt Russell was the best Scottish Native plant
Pleione 'Fuego' (I think) from Graham Catlow
Primula bracteata from Ian Kidman...best primulaceae in show..listening to show visitors/exhibitors the award should have gone to
Primula reidii v williamsii from Graeme Butler...only got a yellow sticker but won the hearts of many
Ramonda nathaliae fron Shiela and Brian Smethurst...they are v fond of the Ramondas and grow them very well
Ranunculus glacialis from Sam Sutherland in the new, rare or difficult class. It caused the judges some difficulty as it was up against the Oreosolum and the P. uintahensis pictured earlier, for me I can never get my R glacialis to flower at all even though I have been trying for years to make...have to say my plants leaves look different but Brian Burrow says that Sams plant is correct.
Rhododendron 'Wee Bee' from Stan da Prato...no picture show of the show would be complete without one of Stans' rhodies

Only seven more to go
Saxifraga exarata adenophora from Ian Kidman...as I remember used to be quite common, not so often seen now?
Saxifraga pubescens 'Snowcap' from Tom Green, another south of the border raider
Sedum humifusim from Shiela and Brian Smethurst, the larger of the two they had brought with them
Shortia soldanelloides ilicifolia from Jean Wylie...good to see her looking pretty good just a few weeks post op...certainly could still talk plenty!!!sorry for the poor pic as was a really nice plant
Tetraneuris scaposa from Richard Barr
Tulipa linifolia from C & D Shaw
Viola spathulata from Ian Kidman...I have to admit to being one who is not overly wowwed by this viola, even given its rarity but lots of people are.

Down to the V's so thats my lot. Re Stans comment on names of plants etc etc I feel that for me individual plants and what they are called is my thing if you like but I do like to click on a web site and get an overall feel/impression of what the show has been like so it needs both types of photograph to do that, just people pics are not my scene even though they get more hits by far than plant pics...c'est la vie

As Secretary of the Glasgow Show I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped in its organisation and  made it so memorable.  Bear in mind that Shows do not arise from some osmotic serendipity but are the culmination of much hard work, diligence and dedication so I make no apologies for the following litany of names.

Bill Robinson: assistant Show Sec and keeper of the sacred table cloths
Anne Bush: and her family of helpers who run the tea-room and help fuel the internal engine when spirits flag
Ian Doig: overseer of the club plant stall and his merry band of sellers who help find us that little garden gem
Jackie Thomlinson: who deputised for Peggy Anderson, our treasurer, and did a magnificent job of liaising and keeping track
                              of the monies
The stewards: table and pot ""movers", Show recorders, door duty etc among whom were Richard Barr, Rodger Smyth,
John di  Paolo, Richard Green, David & Avril Walkinshaw, Alison Ward and her husband, Bob Edge, Steven
MacFarlane, Mike & Sue Thornley, Ann Carmichael, Val Prentice and my apologies if I've omitted anyone
Sue Simpson & George Watt: who ventured into Milngavie town centre mid-morning to hand out flyers
Dave Riley: who will immortalise the Show in his Journal report, Sandy in his web photo essay
Glassford Sprunt: ditto in his photographs
Carole & David Shaw: who brought the club books down all the way from Forres
Anne & Viv Chambers:  for bringing and selling her botanical cards which contribute to group funds
Anne & Sandy Leven: ditto the club merchandise and banners
Liz Mills: our President for handing out prizes
Judges: Barry Caudwell, Lionel Clarkson, Struan Harley, Bette Ivey, Ian Kidman and Elspeth Mackintosh (Lynn Bezzant was
so looking forward to judging but took ill........get well soon, Lynn, you were sorely missed)
Nurseries: Ardfearn, Hartside, Kevock and Rumbling Bridge
Sam Sutherland: who carted the surplus seed trays from Nairn ( at last week's Highland Show) and will take them up
to Aberdeen in a fortnight's time
Carole & Ian Bainbridge: through Carol's superb stewardsip the Joint Rock runs seamlessly with the Shows
Contributors: of food and plants, who took posters; and all those who just came to see a wonderful alpine display
Exhibitors: frae a' the airts, Scottish & English (of which more later ), your plants make the Show a tangible reality
Forumists: all the David Baileys and Annie Liebovitzes (you know who you are) who post dazzling images that allow others
to "visit" the Show in  the comfort of their own living room. Lang may yir lums reek or keep snapping for posterity.
Once again. a big thank you to everyone above - mea culpa if I've left anyone out - you've made me so proud and the Dear Green Place even greener.
John Lee

I don't suppose that you can really thank the most important person responsible for the show, can you, John? If it had not been for all the work that you put into the event there would have been no point in any of us bringing ourselves and our plants to Milngavnie on Saturday. So, thank you for your efforts in making the day a success. Also, thank YOU for persuading Carol and myself to come back to Milngavnie after too long an absence. We had a great weekend and were delighted to have played our very small part in this spectactular show.

Thanks Maggi!! Saturday was such a great day that had me briming with pride witnessing the collaboration and enterprise of all these individuals who travel huge distances and come together on Show Days for the sake of these wee plants that we love so much. As much as I always thank them at the Show - and you know that I am not by nature a "gushy" person - I thought that the immense reach of the forum would be an ideal vehicle for relaying my heartfelt thanks to one and all.
A week on Saturday will be Aberdeen's turn and, notwithstanding your natural anxiety at getting plants on the bench, I know everyone will rally round and make it a Show to remember. Bill and I will be there with all the plants we can muster.

Rest assured that a warm welcome will await all exhibitors and visitors in Aberdeen, John.
I think the fact that the Southport Show is more accessible to  the Southern members than Norwich was will mitigate against such a large contingent travelling north but I expect the 19th May will bring another good Aberdeeen show to bring our spell as Show Secretaries here to a fitting close.

We do so to ensure there are at least some plants on the bench... The only show we consider digging things out of the garden for is our own - though we made an exception this year so that Pam Eveleigh could see Primula Cashmeriana

Sorry for taking so long to acknowledge your post, George. Yes, it can get pretty hectic for Show Secs in the run up to Show day. Spot on with your naming: while it is one of the less flamboyant (bizarre) lachenalias it is one of the best. It was in a small pot thus easy to clean and its partner in the 2 pan class was a Leucocoryne, which was on its fourth Show outing, hence aleady clean.  It was marvellous to see so many of our SRGC members from the North of England showing and visiting. As Maggi mentionrd elsewhere, Norwich was probably a step too far for some. Fortunately, Glasgow's gain.  I'll see you at Ponteland in the Autumn, George.
