Here in Denmark the flowering is almost over
but a new season is coming up
New growth season.
This is for some roxieanums even more exciting
than the flowering one.
Here a few shots from different rhododendrons.
(707) roxieanum
(708) recurvoides
(711) roxieanum v. oreonastes
(729) Hotei hybrid

Jens, you are so right... the new foliage on so many Rhodos is truly breathtaking in its beauty and variety. It drives me crazy when people say " rhdos are all just big green leaves" ....makes me SO furious!!
-
Having been to Jens' garden it is truly of symphony of new growth at this time of year. One of the great sights that I will never forget.

I can't say the flowering season is almost over! I have rhodos flowering in my garden from March to September!
But here is one with new growth. I haven't found the label and do not remember the name (as usual).
BTW what do you call those modified stem leaves (the red ones) of the rhododendron?
-
Hoy - We call them bracts. What a colourful show they give.

Things are obviously booming along there Jens. Wonderful.
It's 6c here and the potato vines Midnight Lace & Maguarite have wilted. Frost threat for the northern part of Nova Scotia tonight!

Jens, at the risk of being thrown out of the Brownies ::) I almost enjoy the new growth on rhododendrons more than the flower :o

No, no, please continue! For a start, we need to see the transition from lime green to dark red for the sheriffii indumentum... .and there is SO much more!
Think of all the folks out there who need to SEE how wonderful rhodo foliage can be!!
-
No Jens, please do not stop, I love the new growth ;D
-
OK - Here are the last ones - I guarantee.
Don't let us forget the lepidote , so here tree ea.
(875) dendrocharis
(883) heliolepis own collection
(885) mekongense
To put an end to all of this , no new growth but some lovely flowers.
(908) campylogynum (Hybrid maybe - I am doubtfull to this as the foliage has no nasty smell from brachyanthum.
My hybrid "Tessa Dane" ( campylogynum x brachyanthum) has been crossed again with campylogynum. Seedlings with yellow flowers
still have evidence of brachyanthum. This is absolute one of my favourites.

Another amazing batch Jens and testament to your hybridizing wizardry as well.
Hoping these are not the last as we saw plenty more beautiful shoots a bit later than this. I'd post some of your plant's shhots from my visit but they were slides.
johnw - sun made a 2 hour appearance, 20c.

Very well, a few from here.

A few more from today.

Very nice plant! How big do you think it will grow?
Here are some of mine with new growth:
First three with names (if I recall rightly?!):
Rh bureavii with old and new growth showing the different colours of the indument and kesangia also with indument:
[attachthumb=1] [attachthumb=2]
Rh lacteum is still waiting but sutchuenense is soon finished:
[attachthumb=3] [attachthumb=4]
And two without names, the first is a seedling and the second has a name (it is a species), but I have forgot it!
[attachthumb=5] [attachthumb=6]

John, is Galax native to your place? I have been looking for seed of that plant! ;D
-
Hoy
Last one maybe argyrophyllum> ::)
A very healthy lacteum!
I assume your question re: size was directed to Jens and his campylogynum hybrid.

Yes, I think you are right! argyrophyllum it is, I remember now. Thanks (and for bracts too ;D).
Isn't this your post?

No it's not native but I plunk pieces here and there in the forest. They take a very long time to get normal-sized leaves but initially spread as you can see. Leaves can get 12cm+ across when in garden conditions. I always seem to miss the seed, it does self-seed. Will keep an eye out for seed on bigger garden plants for you.
re: argyrophyllum maybe 'Chinese Silver'. ???

It was a very long wait for flowers on quinquefolium. I asked Wada when mine would flower and he said "corky bark, corky bark". As predicted when the bark got corky the flower bud set. Only one that first year.

john, you don't need flowers with such foliage!

Jens you are right also pachysanthun, bureavii and othere are in my view better in new growth than in flower and some just great in both

Good grief! Sending in order right now for industrial quantities of smelling salts to be distributed to forumists as urgent treatment.
-
R. balangense and one of the protprons.
johnw
-
I bypassed the bottle of smelling salts and went straight for the Scotch. ;D
-
You have a lot of nice plants, johnw!
The cross between Rh edgewothii and dendrocharis called 'Plover' has survived the last two very cold winters well but did not flower this spring .
-
Here's another species for fine new foliage, R. elegantulum at a friend's garden.

Yes I know that I promised not to send in more shots
but after a walk in my park (70 x 60 feet) had to go in and get my Lumix

Nearly as fine a "bloom" as the original flowers. :)
