Title: "STIRLING" SHOW IN DUNBLANE 19th March 2011
Post by: Maggi Young on March 20, 2011, 04:45:04 PM
A lovely day, good company, great food and fine plants, what more could  we have  asked for?

Ian and I were extremely fortunate to be driven to and from the show by the kindly Angie and now we have two wee white dogs who think that being chauffered in a big car is the best thing since dog biscuits.

I have a lot of pictures, some rather onthe wobbly side. Now I know that I am infamous for my wobbly photos but this time it really isn't my fault.... the floor ofthe Victoria Hall is superbly sprung, to be ideal for dancing on, but this means that anyone walking by as a photo is taken vibrates floor, p tables , plants and photographer, so there are even more out of focus shots than I
usually provide  :-X

I'll add the pix meantime and  perhaps return at some point in the future if time permits to add some  names.

Sandy and his team were busy all day. None more so than the stalwarts in the Tea room.... what a work they put in and how much grub do we all consume?!
(That last part was rhetorical, by the way!)

So much  work required by so many people, over and above the effort needed by the exhibitors to grow the plants and then prepare them and transport them tio the show...... a mammoth effort from all but all leading to a grand day out.

A short aside now, to the display, winning a Gold Medal, the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. These plants are cared for by the busy Elspeth Mackintosh and were brought to the show by the RBGE's  Elspeth, John Mitchell and with help from Struan Harly.

There were some odd goings on "above" the RBG stand.... not sure that's it's hanky panky though... more evidence of higher beings......

Forrest Medal Plant was this Trillium rivale (Purple heart group) from the Glenrothes Greenfinger himself,  Cyril Lafong.

There were some good art entries but since most had shiny coverings my pix were awful.... only one I caught well was this from Forumist  ChrisB... well done Christine.
Didn't see Christine all day, though she had a lovely Erythronium on the bench.... perhaps Gill Lee brought them from Northumberland for her.... I forgot to ask Gill.  :-X :-[

Speaking of Gill Lee, that lady did as well in Section II as Cyril did in SectionI , winning a Bronze Medal and a special local Trophy for the most points in the section.

Hi Maggi,

Thanks for that.  I sent up my plants with Liz last Wednesday, hoping the erythronium would last until the weekend.

I had a primula there too, Broadwell Milkmaid, put it in just to hold up the erythronium really.  I think Gill may be bringing me back my plants, I'll get in touch tomorrow.  Just wanted it to be on show really....

Christine, it is that sort of extra effort that is so appreciated by Show Secs and the visitors alike.

I hadn't spotted that the B. Milkmaid was yours too.  I did like your Hellebore painting.

Looks a good show Maggi. I have only been to two AGS shows this year..the last two weekends and I am amazed to see how far on your exhibitors plants are...I have yet to see any T rivale and here in Northumberland my show ones are just coming through the surface of the compost yet there was Cyril with a magnificent pan...must have been warmer up your way than the forecast has suggested.
Thanks for all the pictures, I know how long it takes

Thanks for showing us around Maggi !
We were way down south enjoying the Kent show, but Dunblane seems to have been just as much fun and quality !!

Some lovely things exhibited Maggi, I  must say.  So sorry I couldn't be there really, but had another engagement.  Its nice to see Gill do so well too, bravo everyone.

George, my T. rivale is just making its appearance here in a shady part of the garden.  If I lifted it, it would be flowering by Saturday, but I've never had the guts to dig it up!

Thanks, George.

I think Cyril may have his Trilliums under glass  and so a bit protected.... it may be, of course, that the reflected light and heat from the gleam on all his trophies provides enough impetus to get them started into growth!  ;D

Thanks for posting the pictures Maggi. Had a great day.
It amazed me that there were so many wonderful plants on the benches. After this cold hard winter I think everyone did so well. Couldn't get over Cyril Lafong's Trillium rivale, must have looked at it about a dozen times.
Managed to buy a couple of plants  ::) ;D so thanks to the nurseries and thanks also to everyone that made it a great show.
Thanks also for the company going to the show, those little girls are so good, hope Ian gave them a little bit of steak pie since they were so good.

Angie :)

Maggi, thank you for the pictures of these beautiful plants at this splendid show.
Wished we would have something similar in our country.

A fabulous show and a great collection of pictures for the deprived amongst us. Thanks to all concerned especially Maggi. They didn't seem too wobbly so perhaps the floor wobbles and the camera wobbles were in opposite rythym and cancelled each other out. ;D

I think my favourite plant overall had to be the silver and blue Synthyris in the RBG exhibition, mainly because I have seedlings just planted in a trough, from Ratko's seed. I'll put a group of 3 in a pot too. They germinated well.

Some terrific plants, including a quite large Iris nusariensis, with, sadly, slightly tired flowers.

My eye was really taken by the little Saxifraga scleropoda in reply 8 of the  previous page, in image a3333a.

The combination of acid yellow flowers, like little firework explosions against dark green foliage, with just a hint of a blue overshade was most .
It  was grown by Ian and Carole Bainbridge.

There were a couple of nice pots of Tulipa polychroma too.
And some little Dionysias that were cuter than buttons.... idn't  seem to get pix of them... maybe Ian did... I 'll see tomorrow.

Many lovely plants there, thank you for the pictures!

My Trillium rivale are also well behind this - even in the mild NW of england. Same goes for Pleione Shantung 'Ducat' - at least a fortnight off flowering here even if the weather stays mild. However - I think its companion is mislabelled by the exhibitor. Surely this is Pleione Eiger, not Etna?

Sorry to hear that, Michael.  You showed some beauties on the forum last year.
My one T. rivale has appeared above the compost in its pot.  It has been in a covered cold frame all winter.  The foot or more of snow on the frame in the coldest weather must have protected it.

Sorry to hear that Michael. Like Roma I have some in pots in a frame which are now just popping through. I'm pretty sure the ones in unprotected fishbox troughs have had it though.
