Title: Happy travellers and a puzzle, too!
Post by: Lvandelft on October 15, 2010, 04:26:56 PM
After more than 2 weeks traveling through England and a small part of  Scotland and meeting
many friends at the D.W, we were happy to return safely at home yesterday evening.

We had a wonderful trip with mostly good weather, though the first days it was rather wet. Never seen such enormous mushrooms before ::)

We call those golf balls Luit! ;D Through which parts of England were you travelling? The garden party and single track road are quite unusual.

We call those golf balls Luit! ;D
With such balls it would be rather Farmersgolf, I did not know the Brits play this as well, see:          http://www.boerengolf.nl/english/index.html (http://www.boerengolf.nl/english/index.html)
you can even buy adequate footwear for this  ;D ;D

I can only give you a roughly impression on a map Anthony.
We drove about 4.400 kms in total!
In the Southwest we drove probably more single track roads, many with grass verges in the middle, than normal roads ::) ::) ::) :-X

We noticed that in Britain quizzes are rather popular in pubs. We were sent away for dinner at a big pub which was renown for good food.
They had no table free for us, which meant 6 mls. driving to another place  ??? :o
So it's maybe a good idea to make a quiz and I show pictures of places along our tour where we have been. Sounds like fun to me to see if the "Islanders" know their country :D

To make it easier for a start, we drove on the first day from Dover up to W. Yorkshire where we visited the next rainy day a museum in a small town dedicated to a famous British person.
I think that at the most places some Forumists already have been, so it's not to difficult.

There will be about 20 pics, so maybe this should be better moved to the Puzzle thread?

That is right Ger! Long time since we heard from you   ;)
It was raining most of the day, so we drove to Harlow Carr where we at least could look inside the alpine house. Surprisingly we had more than an hour no rain after arrival there.Just after our stroll through the garden and outside the alpine house it started again pooring down ::) ::)

Here is the next picture I made two days later (raining again ::) )

David, now I start wondering who told me that he was in this garden a day after we were there  ???
Maybe this person just visited the office there where I meant to see  some good looking ladies when looking through the windows  :P :P :-X
and therefore forgot how the garden was looking.

Brian, you must almost think that we made a literature tour through England, from Bronte land to Daphne du Maurier and then (not so far from here as well) on to Agatha Christie. But it is more by chance that we passed these places.
However, as we were some days later rather close to the place where Agatha lived, Vroni wanted to see the house but when arriving only pre-booked cars were allowed to drive in, so we leaved without seeing even a single brick of the building, only hollow roads    ::) ::)

Sorry Brian, I found Graham's try first and answered a bit earlier.
Had to google the word "Grockel" first. Devonian term for anyone from outside Devon, particularly Tourists Good to know the next time  :o :o

But Bideford is the place where we have been. Were very impressed seeing the boats lying on sand and not in the water.

Luc, whenever you go to Cornwall, don't make the same mistake as we did. It is coastal but totally different from our coasts and the interesting places are mostly down by the sea with very narrow roads between the buildings and no room for parkings and the distributor roads are up the hills.  :-X ;)

Another much visited place in Cornwall is Mousehole. But it's more a mousetrap, as we drove into it and came to a
small little beach and before we knew we drove into a parking place where we had to pay several sterling
for the whole day. In an hour we had seen most of the place and we were not the only persons who
made this mistake. Again, outside of the village was a cheaper parking place but a walk downwards and up after
seeing the place was no option for me  :( :(

We were told to visit the small coastal town Fowey too, but as we drove into the town
through very narrow streets we ended up at the ferry but there were no parking places.
The options were to turn or take the ferry. As it started to rain we decided to take the ferry and look from the other side of the river
back to Fowey and make some pictures.
On the other side there was not other option than drive up the hill in the queue and no possibility to make a stopp at all.

Lostwithiel in Cornwall is a nice little town too and with it's old Roman Bridge certainly worth a visit.

Typo I think Luit, the bridge is Norman (the ones who clobbered us in 1066!) the Romans clobbered us about 5/600 years earlier ;D

Lanhydrock House, Bodmin
I think I am correct this time
Graham

That was really fast Graham. I found that Lanhydrock was used as a place where
children from London were evacuated to escape the blitz. So it a wellknown house in GB.
It was in the garden fascinating to see big stands of Melianthus, Cautleya etc.

Here some pictures from Lanhydrock and gardens

I'm really enjoying your visit to Devon and Cornwall.
This seems to have been quite a trip.
How long were you away.

Really like the Coprinus picaceus.

I wonder if the Cautleya is C. spicata 'Robusta'?

Graham, after leaving the DW in Scotland we had about 10 days before returning home for touring through England.

Before I give the next hint I want to show a plant we saw in the garden of a b&b where we stayed
in Cornwall.
I always thought that this plant was used as a sort of groundcover, but here we saw it covering a wall.
It was planted once at the foot of this wall.
Polygonum vaccinifolium

Paddy, I always make a picture of the names as they are in the garden where I see it.
Here it was just Cautleya spicata.

Brian, I reallly expected that more forumists would know this garden.
It's surely worth a visit when snowdrop time is over. I will wait no longer with my pictures from there.

To save time we decided that Vroni would visit the Buckland Abbey and I make a visit to the nearby
gardens at Buckland Monachorum.  So we were both happy   :D

The gardens are very impressive with some beautiful plants.

Then we drove up North to make a visit to Pine Cottage Plants of Dick Fulcher, where I was told by some forumnists that I would find a special Agapanthus.
It's just a small nursery and we were lucky that Dick was at home, because he was about to leave for a trip to the Himalaya next Tuesday.
He insisted to show his private garden, and some other plants he loved in his glasshouses, but not before having a cup of tea with him and his wife.

We had heard much of Dartmoor, so we decided to drive back to our base right trhough the moors.
We were very lucky (...) because that day was very foggy so it was just ok for experiencing this special area.
On the highest point of the road there was a bit more sight and I made a few pictures.
The wind was VERY strong and very cold too. Making a longer walk without boots was not possible.

On Sunday we wanted to visit some places along the S. Devon coast. When passing the outskirts of Torquay we saw many cars and people on an enormous field which seemed to be a Car Boot Sale. Being curious and  never seen such a “market” before we made a short stop.
At such a place people can buy all the rubbish which normally is thrown in the dustbins  ;D ;D
Some pictures of the place and people:

We then drove on taking the ferry at Dartmouth to the coast, where we came to the Slapton Sands at Torcross.
This is an interesting place in the history of the Second World War, because in April 1944, American troops were training at Slapton for the D-Day invasion of northern France. The beach provided a good model for the conditions they would encounter on the Normandy coast.
On the night of the 28th, however, a flotilla of fast German attack boats arrived unexpectedly off the coast and took the trainees by surprise. Many of the American craft were sunk, and over 900 American GIs were killed before they had even had a chance to enter the war.
The most interesting part is that the tragedy was kept a top secret. By orders from general Dwight D. Eisenhower the survivors were strictly ordered not to talk about it.
After the Normandy invasion the incident was not revealed until 40 years later. :o :o

Of course we walked through the garden to admire some nice specimen and the various glasshouses. Alas not many flowers at this time of year, but given the mass of seedling plants there will be enough to see in the near future.

I am not sure wether this House and Gardens are still in Devon or in Dorset, but I also found that it's in Somerset???

When traveling, the unexpected things always make the difference. While walking through the
walled kitchen garden we met a charming old lady who was picking apples.
As things happen sometimes, we chatted a bit and were told that she managed the whole big
kitchen garden, which was at least an acre, on her own. She gave us a few apples and as we said that
it was a pity the house was not open that day, she invited Vroni for a private view in the house :D :D  8)

But we came more special to Exbury for the Nerine Show. I had already seen pictures of glasshouses full of flowers, so we were rather disappointed to come into not a very big hall where on some tables pots with Nerine sarniensis were placed. It was possible to buy plants from the tables. Photographing was only possible with flash so I took just a few.
I expressed my disappointment to the lady in charge.
She was very kind and immediately tried to make a phonecall whith the responsible gardener for Nerine.
The result was that we could make a visit to the glasshouses next morning if we were still around  and he would be delighted to receive us.
And so we did and were heartily welcomed by Mr. Theo Herselmans.
Here few pictures of the Show and some of the glasshouses, but the bulk I will better show in the special Nerine thread.
