Dear me..... deafening silence from Ponteland.... had no-one a camera or able to give us a pen-picture of how the show went?
I believe Bob and Rannveig Wallis won the Farrer with a Scilla....but which scilla?
And how did the sale of Archibald bulbs go?
So many questions, so few answers..... :'(
-
Indeed...there must surely have been at least one camera wielding forumist there. I do know, however, that the Farrer Medal winning 'Scilla' was Hyacinthoides lingulata.
-
Oh well, at least we're getting somewhere, Martin!
Hyacinthoides lingulata is a synonym of Scilla lingulata I think?
Co-incidentally one of the bulbs for sale from the Connoisseur Collection at the SRGC DWE !
-

It is, those taxonomists have been busy in the little blue bulbs department ::)
also looks like they've dropped the var ciliolata into the species

There would have been potted bulbs of it for sale at Ponteland too if we had gone. We planned to but I was overcome with an attack of extreme lack of enthusiasm, so had a lie in instead.
Anyway - plenty of pots of the Scilla to sell at North Lancs meetings now, with any remaining being sold off at Blackpool in March. Plug over ;)

I have pictures but it will be tomorrow until I am able to upload them
Stan
-
Stan, you are a gem.... we can wait! :-*
-
Maggi,
I was taking the 'official' photos for the AGS/SRGC bulletins, and asked Stan to take some around the hall as I did not have time (or the energy, after carrying so many heavy pots :P) to take them. Here's a couple of views of the Farrer Medal plant (Hyacinthoides lingulata) from Bob and Rannveig Wallis to whet your appetite.
I'll post a few more later to fill in any gaps in Stan's coverage, but mine are all 'portrait' type shots of the plants - no people!
-
Thanks, Peter.
I don't know, these young folks today.... get exhausted so easily....... :-X ;)
...you'll have happy Editors, though! Perhaps you should lobby for smaller pot sizes!
-
... mine are all 'portrait' type shots of the plants - no people!
No disrespect to those at the show, but I'd prefer to see the plants rather than the people if there was a choice. ;)
-
I don't know, these young folks today
Well that's made my day, it's been a long time since anyone called me young! :D
Brian, don't worry, I will post the plant pictures - it's just that to get the quality I need, the files are large and take some time to process/tweak to get them just right. Sometimes other things get in the way - family life, gardening, work, gardening.....

Thanks for the pictures Stan they give a good overview of the show and show what can be produced in October with a bit of luck. I did take my camera but it decided it wasn't going to work on the day, probably because I dropped it on the way into the hall...luckily I was able to fix at home later in day.
Some comments on the show...The Farrer exhibit caused a fait bit of discussion among exhibitors and it was a lot 'quieter' an exhibit than say some of the cyclamen on show but close inspection did show it to be in pristine condition and beautifully presented...never heard how close the voting was to see if the judges were devided or not
Stans pic of the small cushion 3 pan class may have some of you wondering how three small cushions were placed above the large cushions that came second but the answer lies in the schedule as the class demanded three species and all other exhibits appeared to have hybrids included in their three pans...caused a fair bit of muttering, especially as the winning three was my exhibit and I did not get it onto the bench till late (trying to fix camera) and the other exhibitors thought that they would get away with the odd hybrid. I understand next year the 'species' bit will not be there!
-
In any group of alpines I never expected to mark a Solanum as a favourite but that variegated one with its handful of jaffas thrown over, is something special.
-
Many thank for posting the pictures from the benches Stan - you seem to have been remarkably busy!
Now that I've sorted the pictures for the journals and the CDs are ready to post to those who need them, I thought I'd post some close-ups for the forum.
Firstly two Certificate of Merit plants:
- Asplenium ceterach, Ivor Betteridge
- Cyclamen clilicium (x2), Mike and Christine Brown (apparently this is the winning plant from the Cyclamen society show a few weeks ago)
- Cyclamen graecum anatolicum, Derek Pickard (Ewesley Salver winner for the best cyclamen in a 19cm pot)
-
The other two Certificate of Merit plants. The judges seem to have been very impressed by the quality of the plants at the show, quite remarkable for an autumn show and a fitting finale to Mike and Pearl's time as show secretaries.
Gaultheria sp., Alan Newton
Galanthus peshmenii JCA 509.305, Ian Kidman
-
Stan, Peter, you have given us a great "visit" to the Show.... very nearly as good as being there! Many, many thanks. :-* :-*
I agree, a lot of quality plants.... just expecting the sound of galanthophiles fainting with the sight of that pot of G. peshmenii from 'Kidders'...... they get overexcitied at this time of year, you know! ;)
-
I'm afraid I'd never make a galanthophile - they're all just little white things to me. ::)
Here'e two orchids, much more my cup of tea :D
Goodyera sp. (x3), another Alan Newton plant
Sprinthes cernua forma odorata 'Chadds Ford' (x2), Anne Vale (you need a big label for this one) ;)
More later
-
Time for a few more photos.
- Celmisia argentea, George Young (this pot was heavy, and I must confess I slipped when carrying out to the doorway where I was doing the photography and nearly dropped it. :o. George, I hope you're not reading this)
- Crocus tournefortii (x2), Don Peace (fabulously branched styles)
- another view of Cyclamen graecum anatolicum, Derek Pickard
-
- Gentiana 'Braemar' (x2), Stan da Prato (on of the Gentians raised by Ian McNaughton)
- Crocus goulimyii 'Mani White' (x2), David Boyd
-
- Saxifraga fortunei 'Cherry Pie', Christine Boulby
- Enkianthus campanulatus 'Wallaby' (x2), Keith and Rachel Lever (good foliage plant for the autumn shows, I wonder what the flowers are like?)
- Narcissus miniatus, Bob and Rannveig Wallis (my notes show that this may be N. serotinus, I know that they have exhibited N. serotinus in the past)
More to follow tomorrow

I think 'Wallaby' flowers are creamy, Peter
The forum has the answer to so many questions..... follow these links to learn more about Enkianthus campanulatus in general, folks....

N. miniatus has recently been seperated from N. serotinus.... see this thread

Thanks for that info Maggi, I'm ashamed to say I've never ventured into the Narcissus section of the forum!
-
Final batches of plant photos:
- Narcissus miniatus (close-up), Bob and Rannveig Wallis (having looked through the links Maggi mentioned earlier, I've dropped the N. serotinus specific epithet)
- Galanthus peshmenii (x2), Don Peace
- Galanthus reginae-olgae, Ian Leslie
-
- Galanthus reginae-olgae (close-up), Ian Leslie
(That will keep the galanthophiles happy)
- Bessera elegans (x2), Anne Vale
- Genitiana sino-ornata, David Boyd (after the near-disaster with the Celmisia, there was no way I was lifting this plant off the bench!)
-
- 3pan cyclamen, distinct, Bob and Rannveig Wallis 3 distinct subspecies of C. graecum; from the back graecum, candidum and anatolicum)
- Anigozanthus flavidus, John Richards (a very awkward plant to photograph, bigger than my largest background, hence the photo against the brick wall. The close-up shows th eunusual furry-looking flower)
That's all of the pictures that I took for the journals (AGS and SRGC). I didn't have any time left after that to take any more pictures of plants on the show benches, thanks again,Stan, for your efforts there.

I really love Alan Newton's Gaultheria, the outer branches weighed down with the crop of fruit. With so many super species and fruit in many colours, there's a rich field to be mined by someone with a hybridizer's brush. ;D
