(Wasn't sure where to put this Maggi so please move or merge as you think best :))
Yesterday I spent a most enjoyable 6 hours wandering round RHS Wisley with my jungle plant club. We were rather disappointed that two thirds of the big glass house were closed for 'essential maintenance' as that was out main reason for going >:( - but it did give me more time to drag everyone round the alpine house and woodland area. ;)
A few pictures from yesterday.
1 - right side of alpine house
2 - left side of alpine house
3 - Mouser
4 - Cyclamen mirabile
5 - Cyclamen intaminatum
6 - Colchicum 'The Giant' (the colchicums were looking stunning everwhere you looked 8))
7 - Vivid vivid red on Bessera elegans
8 - and carpets of Cyclamen hederifolium everywhere too 8)

And then a few snaps I took in the woodland area.
1 - I loved the foliage on this Daphne odora 'Mae-jima'
2 - Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom'
3 - Earth Star
4 - Actaea pachypoda
5 - There was a sculpture display on this weekend and I thought Maggi would like this bronze.
6 & 7 - a couple of Large Cyclamen hederidolium corms (with the corms above ground)

It's great to see the quality and extent of the cyclamen while they're at their peak.
Are earthstars a regular sight in SE England?

I don't think they are common Ashley. I know of them at Wisley and in Saville gardens - sure there must be other places but not often seen I think.

stunning pics John,does the earth star have an odour?it reminds me of Rafflesia. Is it parasitic?sorry about so many question but plants like this just grab my attention.

Lovely shots from you both. I think the American name for Actaea pachypoda is a good one, "Doll's Eyes". It's a nice plant in the garden.

John, what a number of good pics. But I never saw any galanthus??? Our second time in the year is coming now. Your earthstar is wonderful!!!

Just was thinking exactly what luc has just said. I think if I lived close to Wisley I might become a fixture there.

I took 10 photographs and this was the only one in focus. How did I ever cope without a digital camera?... ;D

Sorry Davey - I've just spotted your question. I've no idea of the answer though. ::) I just liked the look of it so took a few photos - some sort of mushroom/fungus I presumed :-\. Hopefully someone else will know more info.
