Title: ABERDEEN SHOW SATURDAY 19TH MAY 2007
Post by: Maggi Young on May 15, 2007, 09:38:18 PM
The Aberdeen Show is this coming Saturday, 19th May, so, as usual, the female version of the local show secretaries is panicking, quietly. As the week progresses, I move on to panicking less quietly, before reaching a crescendo of anxiety on show day. I don't know why I do this job, I am obviously mentally unstable and the thought that all may not go according to my well-laid plans is more than I can bear. Ian, the calm, masculine half of the team, is meantime snoozing gently in front of the TV with a warm Lily Dog cuddled beside him. Any more relaxed and he'd be comatose....What does he not understand? Did he not himself remark, on seeing photos from the Glasgow show, (TWO WEEKS AGO!!!) that all the plants were those we would normally expect to see in Aberdeen ?  Is he unfazed by the fact that WE have NO show plants ourselves? (I know, I know: show secs without plants, we should be drummed out of the Brownies!)
I don't know which fear is the worst: that the public will not come to the show, or that they WILL come to the show, but there will not be any plants for them to look at ! At least I hope there will be plenty plants for them to buy!
We are very much looking forward to welcoming  forumist, Fermi de Sousa to the show as guest Judge.... we've told him it's a great day, not to be missed......he's on a European trip, from his home in Australia, following the Czech Conference.... I'm going to look a real twit if there are no flowering plants on the benches! Thanks be for foliage classes, that's all I can say!
In an attempt to lower my blood pressure, I try to think of previous years outcomes to my incipient hysteria.......well, now I come to think of it, I get into this state every year and every year the show benches fill up with beautiful plants and the hall is a positve riot of colour... so... it'll probably be allright on the day, then? Yes, I'm sure it will be.... why not come along to see how it goes? You'll be very welcome, I promise you that... the show is in the Ruthrieston West Church Halls, Broomhill Road, Aberdeen, this Saturday, 19th May, from 11.30 to 4 pm.  If you wanted to make a mad woman VERY happy, you could come along during staging times and bring a plant  to enter the show... now that would make you even MORE welcome!! :-*     See you there!

Hi Maggie
Remember the words printed on the front of the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy (in large, friendly letters) - "Don't Panic"
I hope (and am sure) it will be a great day - just sorry i can't be there as I'm bringing a party of 48 (49 if you include me) keen gardeners to Perth for the weekend so will be fretting over them, making sure I don't leave anyone behind, that they've all got their own plants etc etc.
So if anyone knows of a decent place to get a drink in Perth, please let me know as I reckon my nerves will be completely shot by Friday evening when we arrive!!
have a great day and I hope it is a triumph and look forward to seeing the pictures

Sue

'Don't Panic' reminds me of those other two words especially designed to send even the calmest person ballistic: 'Calm Down'. :o

Well David & I will be there for what it is worth  ??? I've just been looking at possible plants for the show benches and feel even less happthan I did before my tour of the greenhouses/cold frames... sorry to depress you even further Maggi! So far I've come up with 6 plants only 2 of which are actually in flower (though one is a lovel rose pink colour). David has just come home and we will do anotehr tour of everything but right now I am not convienced there is anything else worthy of putting on a show bench.  :-[

Well, I've had fewer show entries made on previous 'wednesday-before-the show nights' so there may be a good show in the offing, after all!  There is still time for lots moreentries to be notified, so I'm 'calming down' fairly well.... for the moment ! Watch this space!

Maggi, I said I'd pop one or two plants over to Jean to take up, but I think you went a little too far in sending a "Shore Porters' Society" lorry down to Dunblane. ::) It must be the oldest removal company in the world?
Title: Re: ABERDEEN SHOW SATURDAY 19TH MAY 2007
Post by: Maggi Young on May 18, 2007, 08:46:59 PM
Shore Porters are the oldest, their advertising says so.  A friend of ours is a director... he's a lot older than he looks! Who else would we send ? Pity you couldn't bring the plants yourself, Anthony, but thanks  for supporting the show!

Fermi is here and has been put to work setting up the show....fine strong fellow, useful to have around!

Just to let you all know the Aberdeen show was absolutely great - well done Maggi and Ian. When David has made sure all the plants are happy after their 180 mile round trip he will be putting up some pix for you all.

Post by: Maggi Young on May 20, 2007, 02:46:20 PM
Thanks, Carol, it was a most enjoyable day and thanks for your help. Pix will follow eventually, but lots of work to do here to tidy up show paraphenalia before it goes back into storage for next year, we've been out at the BBC today and Ian is off on the red-eye to Chelsea tomorrow, so not much chance of pix from here for a while!  Sue was right, I needn't have panicked... although the number of exhibitors and plants was down on last year, the hall still looked really good and there were some super plants on display and up to the Joint Rock Plant Award Committee, so Carole B., her leg freshly out of plaster, had a long day's recording to do... and all up a tricky flight of stairs....Brian Wilson got a month's worth of daily exercise, running the plants up and down to the committee ! Large numbers of local members pitched in to help in every possible way and it looked like everyone was going home happy. There were lots of people leaving carrying large bags of plants, so the shopping ethic was well to the fore, which is essential to the financial health of the show and the local Group. From the point of view of the Group Plant stall, it was great to see such a large range of plants for sale...that was a colourful display in itself.

Forrest medal plant , grown by  Cyril, the Glenrothes Greenfinger, was a plant Dr Lafong has had success with before at  the Aberdeen show, Silene hookeri  bolanderi Pan must have been fourteen inches across (35cms?) and full of flowers, such white and deeply cut petals, giving a very light fluffy look to the plant. Lovely!

Whilst I did take one or two photos they were of plants of specific interest to me rather than for the Forum.
I understand that there was discussion about the validity of the names of the Primula polyneura on the benches, ours and those exhibited by David Rankin as a class of three to show variation. Ours were from SRGC seed and I am trying to verify the source for further discussion with David.
As an Ariseama lover I was delighted with the A. griffithii shown by Ann Chambers. It was a venerabl specimen and much admired.
Still as an arisaema and other aroids lover I found mt newest 'must have' plant in Roma Fiddes's Pinella cordata. Aren't those leaves wonderful. I first saw pinella at Gardening Scotland last year and so hope to find cordata this year. Do any forumists have any P. cordata bulbs to sell me :D
It was a great show, as usual, even if the benches were less well filled than usual. Actually there was a benefit in this as the plants were spaced that little bit further appart and you could appreciate them better.
Thanks to Ian and Maggie (and all their helpers) it was a super day out in sunny Aberdeen.

Has anybody got any more pics so that I can get my fix.
I spent all day on saturday suffering from sea sickness out on the north sea at the claymore fields.
I would much rather have been at the Aberdeen Show than out here.

Well, I had a great time visiting Aberdeen and seeing how a SRGC Show is put together(and dismantled after the event!) and what goes on in the judging; the decision on the Forrest Medal was a hard won battle between Cyril Lafong and....Cyril Lafong! Well he did have a bit more competition in the early rounds of the decision making. As guest judge I was allowed to make a special award for MY favourite exhibit and it went to David and Stella Rankin's Celmisia in full flower. Sorry, I can't post any pics till I get back to my computer at work and can download and resize them all!
Maggi and Ian did a brilliant job of running the Show and looking after judges and officials and friends. I was particularly pleased to meet people who I'd known for years through the pages of the Journals and the Forum: the Youngs (of course!), the Shaws, Ian of the Christie kind, Cyril Lafong, the Wilsons, the Taylors and the Hunts. It was a double pleasure to meet up with Jean W. after first meeting at the last NZAGS study weekend. [Shamesless plug: Remember, folks, the next NZAGS WEEKEND is at the end of January next year! And anyone thinking of travelling all that way should consider a quick nip into Australia on the way back (hopefully Victoria won't be on fire again next February!).]
I can say that Aberdeen lived up to its reputation of hospitality and friendliness and outstanding plants.
cheers
fermi (in Kingston-on-Thames)
P.S. It was good to see that Lily was recovering well after her eye surgery; you couldn't want a lovelier puppy-dog!

Fermi, we really enjoyed having you visit us. Haste ye Back, as we say in Scotland, and  how appropriate the motto of Aberdeen is, "Bon Accord ---happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again"

Since you mention the adorable Lily, I'll begin some pix with her at the show.
Thanks to everyone asking after her sore eye... it is getting much better and though she still has limited sight in it, it no longer looks so gruesome that grown men and women were recoiling from it in horror... you can see that she has regained her former good looks and is full of enthusiasm for the show and meeting her public...
[attachimg=1]

of course, a show day can be very tiring and even the keenest party-goer can run out of steam in the evening and  need a little snooze during supper .....

The handily placed foot belongs to Ian Bainbridge!

This plant drew a lot of attention, Arisaema griffithii, one of a three pan of Arisaemas shown by Annne and Viv Chambers from Killearn.
[attachimg=1]

look at the markings and sculptural effects inside the flower
[attachimg=2]

the vevelty black areas start flat at the edge of the flower and raise upright towards the centre..stunning! As one moves one's head, the stripes of black and green  appear to open and close like a venetian blind and when 'closed' the velvety interior is inky black.

[attachimg=3]
the stems are textured too.. I described the lumpy purple/black markings as pustules but they are correctly, verrucose stems.

[attachimg=4]
With neither pustules nor verrucas, thank goodness, here is Anne Chambers, with a selection of greetings cards derived from her botanical watercolour paintings.

Thanks for the offer of a transcription of John Richards book, David, but I do have access to it.
There is also an excellent selection of pictures of P polyneura on Pam Eveleigh's web site www.primulaworld.com
I am quite happy with the id of mine being polyneura - until somebody suggests otherwise ???

Anthony Darby sent up three plants, courtesy of Jean Wyllie and Glassford Sprunt (don't tell Shore Porters) and proceeded to do rather well with them... his Cypripedium parviflorum ssp. pubescens won its class, as did his entry in class 63, for two pans distinct, which also meant he won the rather attractive trophy that is the Brian Bull Bowl. This engraved caithness glass bowl is in memory of a respected Aberdeen member who died, tragically at too early an age, some years ago. Anthony won the class, which had four entries in tiotal, with a pair of orchids..... Serapias lingua and Serapias orientalis...

Anthony's Cyp.
[attachimg=1]

The lovely pair of Serapias: I am grateful to Anthony for sending up this photo.. Ian didn't "snap 'em" !

Let's see what else we have, before I take Lily for a walk....
Here are three gesneriads from Brian and Maureen Wilson
[attachimg=1]

This is a Brigsia cross, which I cannot recall the name of... it will, of course, be "one they made earlier", for that is a Wilson speciality..
[attachimg=2]
this is a flash shot that is a bit off,but better shows the hairs on the flowers
[attachimg=3]

Brian and Maureen with Ron Smart, who is also very keen on orchids and native plants. These three live only about half a mile apart, so they have that in common, too.
[attachimg=4]

Jancaemonda vandedemii ( Jancaea x Ramonda)
[attachimg=5]

x Ramberlea 'Inchgarth'  (Ramonda x Haberlea)
[attachimg=6]

Good, arent' they?

then there's this one:
Haberlea rhodopensis 'Connie Davidson'

Oh, did I mention gesneriads and the Wilsons?
Ramonda myconi alba
[attachimg=1]

Here are Brian and Maureen having a discussion with Henry and Margaret Taylor
[attachimg=2]

Brian recently wrote in the Forum about finding Paris quadrifolia in the wild quite locally... Henry and Margaret showed a pot full of this quietly beautiful plant in the class  for a Scottish native plant
[attachimg=3]

There were other Paris in the show, see the Rankin's ones, already posted.
Back now to that six pan entry of Stella and David.... Ian took pix of four of the six
Polemonium pulcherrimum
[attachimg=4]

Erinus alpinus
[attachimg=5]

Primula japonica 'Postford White'
[attachimg=6]

Primula cockburniana, yellow form

You will see that the Polemonium got a Certificate of Merit. Other plants which gained a Certificate of merit were Cyril Lafong's Cypripedium parviflorum
[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

Lewisia leana alba, also from the stable of the Glenrothes Greenfinger

Cannot lay my hands on the show records at the minute, they are still under a pile of show debris, but I think Cyril also got a cert. of merit with his Cypriepdium 'Sebastian'   but no pic of that.

John Graham, (the one from Laurencekirk, partner of Lois,  not the one from Grantown)
won the Aberdeen Quaich for the best plant in Section 2 with this pot of Tiarella wherryi
[attachimg=1]

The Saxifragaceae class
[attachimg=2]

Stan da Prato from Tranent brought up a very good selection of plants to win a Bronze Medal in Section 2. This Convolulus cneorum was one of his entries
[attachimg=3]

and this Mammilaria plumosa
[attachimg=4]

as was this trough, planted with dwarf hostas

Some more people pix...
Four Angus Group chums, Robert and Ella Paton from Dundee and Alice and Fred Hunt from Invergowrie. Fred and Robert are hill-walking companions as wel as gardening friends. Fred was disappointed that he did not have more plants to bring to the show, but he has suffered from the season as many of us have. He still had some good plants on the bench, though!
[attachimg=1]

Carol Shaw and Carole Bainbridge take a break
[attachimg=2]

Cyril Lafong and John Lee from Glasgow have a chat
[attachimg=3]

It is Cyril's winning  three pan entry, in the foreground, comprising the Forrest Medal plant, Silene hookeri var bolanderi and Certificate of Merit winning Cypripedium and Lewisia
[attachimg=4]

David Shaw, Alastair McKelvie, (former  SRGC Journal Editor and Membership Secretary) and Carol Shaw, wearing the smart suede jacket she bought on her birthday... the day of the Inverness show... it suits her so well and she loves it all the more because it was a bargain!! ( Woman after my own heart in that respect!!) They are discussing a Saxifraga, by the looks of things, but there are some big lewisias alongside...

[attachimg=5]

Former local Convener, Bob Maxwell had this bright Lewisia as part of his contribution to the show

SRGC Honorary President Bette Ivey takes a stroll around the benches with another of the club's most popular members, local member, Peg Crosland ( who I hope will forgive me for whispering to you that she will be 94 next birthday) Peg's late husband, Jack, was one of the club's most accomplished growers, winning huge numbers of Forrest Medals, ( thirty or more !!??) all aided and abetted by the charming and gracious Peg. The two of them traveled all over Britain as Jack gave talks, as well as exhibiting.
Just visible behind Bette and Peg is Angela Townsley, a local committee member busy with show duties. angela's husband, Derek, very kindly brings the tables we hire for the show to and from their storage facility in one of his vans. Thanks, Derek,  we are really grateful for your help. Thanks too, to all the strong souls who work so hard to assemble and dismantle the show every year....where would we be without you? :-* :-*

No, Luc, we didn't have a good time... we had a WONDERFUL time! We always do!

Cyril Lafong again won the Esslemont Quaich, a trophy in memory of the great grower, Harold Esslemont, which is awarded in Aberden for three pans of rock plants, new, rare or difficult in cultivation.
Here is Viola dasyphylla  Edit by Maggi September 2010:it appears this plant may actually be V. columnaris.....see September 2010 IRG9 ( published online 24th Sept. 2010 for details of a naming mix-up with these species
[attachthimg=1]

Penstemon absarokensis
[attachimg=2]

Here are some notes from Cyril on the 3 plants that won the Esslemont Quaich.

Viola dasyphylla: This is one of the Andean rosulate violas in Section Andinium as it is technically known.  In nature it grow in Argentina (Neuquen province, Lake District andean zone) and volcanic regions on N. patagonia in sandy alpine fields or stony summit ridges and rocky upper slopes at 1000-2000m.  Seeds germinate very erratically.  The plant is grown in a very gritty JI mix, given full exposure in an alpine house and watered carefully around the perimeter of the pot.  An occasional liquid feed is given when the plant is in active growth.

Penstemon absarokensis:  This plant was only introduced in 2004 and comes from Park Co., Wyoming, N America.  It is rarely collected, probably due to the long trek needed to reach the tops of the volcanic Absaroka Mountains.  The plant was grown from seeds collected by Alan Bradshaw of 'Alplains' from the highest station on record - on steep South facing, cinder screes.  Requires a well drained compost in a deep pot, full exposure to the sun and careful watering in winter.  It has also been grown successfully on a scree bed.  The plant is completely herbaceous.

Raoulia mammilaris.  This is one of the 'vegetable sheep' that grows in New Zealans, South Island only at altitudes 1200-1800m on the drier mountains of Canterbury in stable screes.  It was grown from seeds sown 2001.  In cultivation, it requires a gritty but moisture retentive compost that is not allowed to dry out completely.  It is very susceptible to mildew especially in winter.
Sorry, no pic of the Raoulia!

Corking pictures Maggi and a most enjoyable tour of the show. Nice also to have faces of people who's names I know from the literature. Can I also say that your Arisaema picture is beautifully taken and artistically arranged.This is something I am trying to work on rather than just the straight 'Record Shot, which is what you need for ID ing but not perhaps on your wall. Would Ian be jealous if you were to be crowned 'Camera Queen' with Cliff?

Anthony,
that's the hybid Cyp. "Sebastian" which I preferred to the other one: a lot more graceful; but I'm no expert on orchids.
When I eventually download my pics I'll try to put a pic of just it on this thread....horribly out of date by then!

That is an excellent form of 'Sebastian'. Mine is tiny by comparison. Must feed it up some?

God help any country with 'royalty' like that John.....I'll settle for 'the batty buttercup bloke' any day (couldn't have put it any better myself, even with the assistance of my nearest and dearest and complimentary offspring).   :D :D :D :D :D

Actually, I've always hankered after Dame Edna's "housewife superstar" title!! (I'm often told that my modesty is one of my most endearing features! ::) :P ::) :-* )

John, thank you for your compliments...but I must pass them on to the real target of your words... it was Ian who took alll the show pix, including the lovely Arisaema shots. I was nearly arrested for encouraging  various folks to crouch in a certain position, alongside the flower and bob up and down to see the light effects in the interior!  The three-d modelling of the coloured sections of this arisaema are among the most intricate and beautiful I have seen, it is a truly remarkable plant.

I must say, it is a joy to have digital images of these flowers to enable one to better study their intricacies in magnification on the pc screen. An added delight for the gardener or artist.

Arrested, well we nearly fell over sideways trying to look inside the beastie and getting back up off my knees was seriously painful but I wouldn't call that being arrested  :P :-* ;)

Before long, though, the visitors were fewer and it was nearly time to pack up
At the entrance desk, Doug Evans looks like he's had enough, or is it just that Maggi, far right almost out of shot, is bending his ear?
near left, Rosemary Lupton, Jean Evans sorting the cash, Doug looking a bit doubtful!

I had spotted this cute little pine, with its candles, in the show hall..
[attachimg=2]

It made me think of candle-lit supper with friends...

[attachimg=3]

But that's not a great idea, you wouldn't be able to see us..

[attachimg=4]

better to cast a bit of light on the subject
[attachimg=5]

Yes, that is better.... a pleasant meal with friends to round of a lovely day...

Cheers, Everyone! Thanks to all the people who made the show such a success!

Maggie

You were asking what X Briggostemon is.  It is a hybrid between Briggsia aurantiaca and the little Ancylostemon humilis that we also showed.  This is the first year that it has flowered.

Sandy Leven's Aberdeen show report is online...see here:
http://www.srgc.org.uk/shows/aberdeen/report.html

A wee correction... Brian Hammond's display of Sedums was awarded  a GOLD medal, rather than a silver.

And wait till I see that Leven fellow... imagine showing a photo of the Judges getting their tea and scones with the jam still in the jar and using styrofoam cups? Yes, I know that's actually how it was, but there's no need to let everyone know!!

Well, the pics are finally downloaded, so working backwards, here are some additional pics from the Aberdeen Show.
Firstly the posy from Susan Band for Maggi: Tulipa sprengeri, PCIris hybrid and a blue poppy.
Then the much photographed Arisaema griffithii.
Two Australasians, well New Zealanders, specifically from David and Stella Rankin.
Cyril being presented with his award by Maggi.
Oxalis "Gwen Mc Bride"
Sedum pilosum from Brian Hammond's superb display.
Rhodo."Sarled" from Ian of the Christie kind.

Sorry if these duplicate others such as those on the Show report!
cheers
