Title: EAST CHESHIRE AGS SHOW 5th MAY 2007 AT MACCLESFIELD
Post by: ranunculus on May 05, 2007, 09:19:45 PM
Another Saturday - another Show.
This time we ventured into beautiful Cheshire for the AGS East Cheshire Show. Unfortunately the season, the Czech Conference and a second AGS event in East Anglia on the same day reduced the quantity (but certainly not the quality) of the exhibits on display.
Lots of splendid plants and a superb Farrer Medal winning Cypripedium gisela from a relatively new exhibitor; Linda Pickering from Market Weighton who also scooped several other awards. Many congratulations to Linda from all in the show fraternity.
Congratulations to the Show Secretary; Liz Maddock and her team on another excellent event.
Only a limited number of photos today I'm afraid....many plants have already featured in previous show reports this season and a strange combination of direct sunlight on some plants and generally poor lighting in the hall resulted in a number of less than perfect images. Please enjoy.
We'll start with a superb bluebell wood in the vicinity of the show venue in Macclesfield: -

Cliff,

You will have to be given the title of 'Official Reporter'.

Another great photographic treat.

Many thanks, Paddy

Nice looking plants and good photos too Cliff. We would have liked to have been there but your pictures will have to do as a substitute. Will get to another show soon, maybe with something to show?

Many thanks Paddy and Mick....it's a pleasure to share some of the beauty that we were fortunate enough to see at Macclesfield.

Ah, East Cheshire! The only AGS show I ever attended, except for the big Conference show. Both events in 1981. I'm long overdue. Funnily enough, I have a photo of Pinguicula grandiflora at that EC show too.

Cliff, again my thanks for your efforts to share the show with us here.
I laughed when I saw your caption to the photos, "the Show Stance" since I had been thinking how many crossed arms we were seeing..... not very friendly body language, is it? One can only hope they were having more fun than it appears! Can't imagine that Vic Aspland wasn't enjoying the day... it's in his nature to be cheery !

I am pleased to see some good examples of ericaceae on the show benches......for some time these plants seemed to have fallen out of favour... I hope that they are headed for a general resurgence of interest.... Eric rules, okay! 8)

I think if I been able to show any of these wonderful plants, I'd be grinning, with my arms folded, like a Cheshire Cat. ;D Superb. :)

Maggi, so many plants, so many we want to pick up and touch! Arms folded is the only way to avoid problems at shows.

I am pleased to see so many outstanding photographed rare plants.
Thank you.

Thanks for the report, Cliff, but I must take issue with Linda Pickering being a 'new exhibitor'. She has been growing and showing for many years, and has been a great and generous friend to me for as long! Unfortunately, since a stroke, her son has had to take her plants to the shows for her - so this is a crowning acheivement to a long alpine career. Congratulations, Linda!

How wonderful that Linda is persuing her growing and exhibiting even after illness, I hope it is proving  therapeutic for her...it is good for us to see her plants, that's for sure! I have never had the pleasure to meet the lady, Anne, but I hope you will pass our best wishes to her and tell her that we have enjoyed her success from afar.

Many thanks for your pics, Cliff.
That Allium shelkovnikovii is a new one to me; I'll have to look out for it on the seedlists!
A few Ranunculus pics were taken on the garden visits in Prague, usually with a muttered "This will be for Cliff"! So look forward to seeing those soon!
cheers
