Very interesting to see the differences in thse daphne.... the first one is hairy all over, leaves, flowers, the lot, while this last little gem appears to have leaves that are so fat and smooth as to be almost those of a succulent, but the buds are still furry! Thank goodness for digital photography, I would never have seen have these details otherwise!

I didnt notice the leaves and hairy buds either until I edited the photos. Both these plants are small with the upper one, with no name about the size of a finger. Just look at the seed head of the moss and the grit

Yes, I see it is a little chap! The D. petraea 'Cima Tombae' has a very sturdy trunk, hasn't it? I like the look of that, too.

Ian Mc. posted a short time ago that Robin White was retiring and Blackthorn was rarely open. Having said that he had a stand at the South West AGS in Exter-without a single Daphne. If he had some I would have bought some.

Lovely daphnes Mark! Happy you seeing them right now. My are only in small buds. We have a very pretty species closely related to D. cneorum – D. juliae (Julia’s daphne). Hope it will flower in 2-3 weeks.

Mark, which is the website with details about Blackthorn? Does Robin White have a website? I wasn't aware of one. As far as I'm aware they're only open a few days in Sept and maybe a couple of days next Spring, and that's it for nursery opening, though they may continue propagating and selling at shows.

http://www.thegardeningwebsite.co.uk/category.do is the site Mark refers too, Martin. Blackthorn do not have a website, there are just nursery details, map etc shown in the directory of this website.

Here is my one with the lost label today with almost all buds open. The scent is fantastic but only when up close

I love these Daphnes, I would like to have all of them!
Mark, your Daphne is named after the Austrian horticulturalist, who is  Fritz KUMMERT, not Kummet. :)

I have several daphnes - some are quite big shrubs but this one is retusa and in full flower just now. The scent is fantastic.

The buds on my retusas are only just starting to swell

I spoke to someone at Blackthorn today and he said he is retiring next year. He'll be selling at Pershore on July 7th. I might fly over to buy some Daphnes from him

Mark, is the Pershore event on July 7 an AGS show? Looks like Ivi's put my AGS show schedule booklet in the recycling. Might pop over and see you there if you do come over for some daphnes. Did Robin offer to take some to the show for you to collect?

he didnt say. He did say that all stock that is ready will be brought to the show.

I have admired the plants at Karan Junker's site for many years and go there regularly to sigh and wonder which plant there I wouldn't want. And now, looking at the map, I've just realised that I will be driving pretty near by - oh the temptation!!  ::) :D I know it's a ring-before-you-go nursery, which might help me resist the temptation ...

If I were ever to raise a good Daphne, I'd call it "Broon" ...................sorry. little joke for the Scots... and Martin B. who knows all about DC Thomson!

In a famous Scottish cartoon, (running for about seventy years, I think) about a family called Brown, who are, of course, in Scotland  known as "the Broons,"   there is a character called Daphne.... Daphne Broon !!

My 'Eternal Fragrance' got me a first at todays show. Jozef, yours is a huge plant but I thought it was only released to  sale about two years ago. How old is yours?

The only daphne in flower at the moment in the Rock Garden is D. alpina. I thought this was a spring flowerer but I guess after the stress of the past summer the poor thing was anxious to get into bloom! We've only just entered autumn here in Central Victoria.
cheers

Mark,
At the Czech conference will be a lecture about Daphnes by Vlastimil Braun.
Yes, my ‘Eternal Fragrance’ is two years old, but a plant in the “open”  garden grows always much quicker than in a small pot.
Eternal Fragrance” is an hybrid between D. caucasica and collina, called D. x transatlantica. Below is a picture of another transatlantica clone. The plant isn’t in full flower yet, but I am afraid it is a little bit too large for a pot.

Jozef

I forgot to come back to you. I must re read the list of lectures again.

My unknown Daphne is 'Lawrence Crocker'. The name popped in to my head one evening while lying in bed after Erodium 'David Crocker' came in to my head

Here is a close up of my 'Eternal Fragrance' and the soon to flower, hopefully, D. domini

Not a dwarf by any means a thirty something year old tangutica . I cannot think of amore fragrant daphne it can be quite overpowering. The boss is shown for scale

Also growing through the lower part of the Daphne is Lithodora oliefolium that was planted at about the same time and has now become enveloped

now that is big!

From my small collection I think 'Eternal Fragrance' is the nicest followed by 'Fritz Kummert'. A bit over powering in the garden is a combination scent of Rhododendron 'Lady Alice' and DB Iris 'Open Sky'

at the start of this thread I showed 2 photos of small daphnes growing in a small Dublin garden. I went back yesterday during judging of the Dublin AGS show. I was running around like a blue a** fly. The owner, Brendan Marnell - thanks! - has 50 small Daphnes all labelled and looking fantastic in the bright sunshine. I was taking notes but soon lost my place so the photos will have to do. I usually take a photo of a label before photographing a plant but in my excitement I forgot. Best plants were D. calcicola - I want one - and very dark dirty pink x rollsdorfii

Ian the strongest smell in the garden was a huge Rhododendron 'Lady Alice'. That's the splash of white in the background. What a great use of stones to make the walls. A narrow paths leads around the bed
