Post by: ranunculus on March 14, 2009, 06:26:31 PM
Three early images from the excellent Blackpool AGS/SRGC Show held today ... More to follow from any number of forum members present.

Superb six-pan from David Hoare from Lyminge
Best in Show exhibited by Geoff Rollinson from Holmfirth : Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem'
Wonderful hepatica exhibited by Mavis Allanson from Bolton

David Hoare's having a cracking Show season. How does Geoff Rollinson do it, he must be the southern equivalent of 'Cyril the Squirrel'.

Is that Hepatica just one plant, it would take me a lifetime (in the years I used to have available, not the years I have available now) to get one to that size.

Thanks for posting Cliff the crevice!

I do not look good when I am pea green with envy - and that is what I am right now after seeing that fantastic Sax. and fab. Hepatica, maybe one of these years once I've retired too (whenever that is likely to be  ???) we'll get to see in person...

Crikey, what cracking plants, Cliff.

With a standard like that Show Secretary Lionel Clarkson will be a happy man tonight.

David H is certainly a sax-pert, isn't he?

Was it a Farrer or a Forrest this year?   Hmmm.... odd number year so its a  Forrest Medal,   under SRGC rules.  Worthy winner for Geoff R. for sure..... though I really think Mavis A's Hepatica is just exquisite ..... that's one I'd like to run off with!

No, David, it was a Farrer last year when Ian and Carole B. won with Corydalis popovii! So Forrest Medal  this year.

Breathtaking plants.  That hepatica is just great.  I am curious too, about whether it is one plant of a pan of separate plants.... whatever, it is a sight to behold.  Thanks for all the photos folks, love to see these pics from the shows I can't get to.

You start by potting up one seedling in a pot. Over the years it builds itself up to a state where a nurseryman could divide it into a hundred plants but you decide to put it on the show bench. Is this one plant or multiple plants?

Do people count the flowers on each plant?
I have never seen anything like them and probably never will, but I absolutely love seeing these pics.

Hi Cliff, a wonderful set of pictures from Blackpool show. I must say it was difficult to decide the Forrest medal winner as so many brillient plants were on the show bench, I was worried the benches would collaps with the weight of these huge saxifrages. I was also delighte that a few forumist came up and said hello in fact one or two won red tickets so well done. I post my few pitures from the show and have tried not to copy the ones from Cliff all are worth seeing again anyway,  cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Thanks for all the pictures so far.  Yet again, I failed miserably to take any as I seem to be so busy catching up there wasn't enough time!  And seeing that Two-Camera-Cliff was there took off any pressures to photograph.
Another amazing show, international flavour provided by visitors from Japan, forumists from the Netherlands and Czech Republic, plus widely travelled exhibitors from all ends of the UK  - furthest south must have been David Hoare, I'm not sure about the furthest north - Jean or Glassford I expect?  What a tremendous effort comes together on these days, from the nurturing of the plants over the years, the bringing to perfection before the show, travelling and exhibiting.  Plus all the local group members who beaver away to make the day itself so enjoyable.
Thanks to Lionel Clarkson and all his helpers, plus everyone involved, we look forward to East Lancs next Saturday.

Cliff,

As ever, a great report with super photographs of brilliant flowers. It really is a great treat to be able to see these show reports. You know, these photographic reports from the shows are far, far better than a television report would ever be. We would never see such a selection of the plants on display and we would have to endure the face of the presenter in the way all the time and listen to their ill-informed comments (it is amazing how little about gardening many of these presenters actually know).

Great report, Cliff. Greatly appreciated - I know it takes time to edit and label all these photographs and that it took quite a bit of your time to share them with us.

Rest assured, David, Sax-perts are legal and welcome anywhere! 8)

Hope  you get a moment or two to sit down before you start on your own show next week.  With the recent turnouts, you will be expecting a great display and I would think you'll get just that.  And I can't believe how many Trade Stands you have at your show....... a shopaholics dream...... not much wonder the Channel Hoppers hop to it!

Hope the day goes really well for you and your Team.... I'll be thinking of you  and of all the Stirling Gang at the Dunblane Show that day too.

May all the benches be fulsomely full of flowers and foliage!!!

"Alpine Flower Show returns to Whitworth....  FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE RIVERSIDE... After a break of twenty years, Whitworth will once again play host to a national horticultural event when the Alpine Garden Society stage a Spring Alpine Flower Show at the beautiful Riverside venue on Saturday 21 March 2009. This prestigious event is, in fact, simply returning to its roots, as the old Whitworth Civic Hall provided a superb setting for the very first East Lancashire National Alpine Flower Show staged way back in May 1991. This magnificent event proved such a success that subsequent annual shows were staged at the hall until the organisers were forced to find alternative venues across the county. The intervening years saw moves from Middleton to Bacup via Bolton and Tottington, but now the Society (the largest of its kind in the world) is to renew fond acquaintances with the township of Whitworth by staging an enormous alpine event once again. The show, which should attract exhibitors, judges, nurserymen and enthusiasts from the length and breadth of the country, will feature over one hundred and thirty individual classes ranging from rare alpine gems to bulbs, conifers, ferns and mini-gardens. Unusual plants from across the globe will vie for your attention with the stalls of nurserymen selling the very cream of alpine and rock garden plants, while the nation's leading exhibitors will be competing for a number of highly prestigious trophies. The shows held in the 1990s attracted remarkable attendances, and the organisers hope that many Whitworth folk will have long memories and will be tempted back by the promise of a huge raffle, superb tombola, free parking, seed, book and plant sales and excellent refreshments. Whitworth couple Cliff and Sue Booker from Tonacliffe founded the East Lancashire Local Group of the A.G.S. way back in December 1986, and while the group (which holds regular monthly meetings at the Civic Hall in Ramsbottom, near Bury) continues to thrive, new members are actively welcomed and encouraged. Group Chairman Cliff Booker can be contacted on 01706 356385. Please note the date of this hugely attractive show in your diaries (Saturday 21 March 2009, 11.30am to 4pm) and enjoy seeing the floral magic of the mountains transported to the foothills of the Pennines."

Thanks for posting the pictures from Blackpool.  We used to go to the Morecambe show and enjoyed it immensely.  We also attended the first two shows at Blackpool but the extra distance was just too much to comfortably travel in a day.  It was a round trip of 420 miles.  Although not the same as being there, I can still enjoy the plants on my large monitor.
I am looking forward to Hexham and hearing the "Geordie" accent again.

Really delighted to see those positive comments from those attending on Saturday. As one of Lionels team I'm right chuffed! It was (I think) one of the best shows since we moved to Blackpool. And, even better, there were lots of members of the public there this year too. Admissions on the door seemed to be up anyway, and the plant sales seemed very busy. The lovely weather helped too (though there was a freezing wind howling through the atrium where our plant stall was set up!).

There was one casualty amongst Lionels team - my poor Susan has lost her voice! She already had a bad cold but all the talking on the day has left her completely silent. Its a bit unnerving actually....

We'll certainly be at Hexham, though Susan has been investigating the route to East Lancs  :)

Is that Hepatica just one plant, it would take me a lifetime (in the years I used to have available, not the years I have available now) to get one to that size.

Information from the exhibitor herself ... Mavis confirms that the beautiful hepatica is, in fact, just one plant. Remarkable.

All the show organisers, as ever, deserve a show of appreciation. It must be very stressful but at every show we have been to we have not encountered any problems and been assisted in every way.
Finally to all the people out there who are hesitant about showing, dip your toe in the water and have a go. You don't have to be able to put great entries in six pan classes (yet?)
Have a go you might like it.

Mick, I'm most pleased you chose a good Islay malt to adorn your trophy

Well done Mick, on two counts. Firstly on your very first trophy, and secondly (and most importantly!) your impeccable taste as far as Malt Whisky is concerned.

Congratulations on your well-earned award, Mandy and Mick!  I had hoped to be in position to take some 'presentation of awards' images, but yet another conversation prevented me getting into a suitable place before the awards began, so, unfortunately, I missed your award Mick - and my position proved totally wrong for the other presentations as well, but I will post the results in case some are of interest?

David Hoare dashing up to collect his well-deserved award
Forrest Medal award to Geoff Rollinson presented by Ian Christie with Show Secretary Lionel Clarkson on the stage
Brian Smethurst collecting his (and Shelagh's) award
Well-deserved Gold Award for Syd Cumbus
Syd's super display of photographs
A delighted Syd Cumbus
Six pan exhibit
A final image of Mavis Allanson's wonderful hepatica (taken with t'other camera, Diane)   :)

What a terrific day you had, Mick and Mandy too,of course.   Many congratulations on your success... how exciting to win that lovely trophy .... I am delighted to raise a toast to you here! Well done, and good luck for more successes in the future....... we have been lucky to see your progress from your first tentative entries to this level of accomplishment in a short time... what better example cold there be to anyone out there who is tempted but a bit anxious ?
Mick's right, join in, have some fun and learn a lot in the process.... it's pretty painless... apart from the early morning on show days! 8)

Very interesting report and an insight as to how the judging is conducted. Something I was curious about, as a newcomer to shows, as its done behind closed doors
