Any information’s of this lovely yellow Rh. campylogynum are very welcome!
I got it from a Danish AGS member, who got it from the widow of another AGS member.
Only info: from AGS seed app. 15-20 years ago.
Some may suggest it must be a hybrid, but growing several diff. clones and hundred of cw seedlings it behave and look exactly like a “true” campylogynum.
Only diff I have observed, a little more difficult to root from cuttings.

Jens - Good to have you join up. Hope you will keep us mesmerized with the your fantastic photography and plants.
Last year I think I went through the back issues of the AGS seed exchanges and only found open-pollinated campylogynum listed in a couple of years around those dates. Will do again over the holidays as I can't remember which variety was listed.

While I am very fond of the hybrid rhodo 'Merganser' which is a neat growing plant with lovely clear yellow, waxy bell flowers, I would be VERY keento have this yellow charmer ...... look at that quality foliage..... and the flower colour is superb!
I am very envious!
Mark, the campylocarpum Ghunsa you list above is a different species altogether!

oops :-[
If it is as small as the photo indicates I would willingly give in a place in a trough

Could it be from wild-collected seed? Until recently, the AGS listed such seed under
the name of each donor, which makes a search more time-consuming.
I am going through the lists of the 1980s. There was a lot of seeds from an AGS
Expedition to Sikkim in the 1984 list.
No mention of R. campylogynum in the reports of the Sikkim expedition (AGS 52:3).
There have been yellow campylogynums in the U.S.
In 1980 I bought a rooted cutting of "R.c. var myrtilloides #5 yellow" from
Caperci's nursery (Rainier Mountain Alpine Gardens) near Seattle Washington.
I don't have it now. Lyn Watts of The Greenery in Bellevue Washington, bought
Caperci's stock. He describes #5 as having small tubular yellow flowers.
A photo of Kim, Caperci's yellow hybrid of R. campylogynum x R.c. var cremastum
is on the cover of the American Rhododendron Society Journal, summer 1983 (vol 37:3).
It has salmon - pink buds that open yellow. The first mention of it in print was in
1974, so seeds from it, or from #5, could have been donated to the AGS in the 80s or 90s.
Seed of campylogynum hybrids was offered in 1980, and of campylogynum myrtilloides
several times throughout the 80s, but the AGS did not publish a list of donors
of garden seed, so it isn't possible to figure out who might have donated them.
My sleuthing is over - time for lunch. But I hope seeds of the lovely plant
that started this will be offered in one of the seedlists.

What a little beauty!
-
I see in Jens' photo that there is the slightest hint of some pink on the edges of the flowers.
Oh, dear, I am suffering serious jealousy here! :o
R. campylogynum are such great little plants in ANY colour...... as the saying goes " what's not to love?" ::)
-
Diane - One wonders how yellow would result from a cross of campylogym x campylogynum Cremastum? Bizarre. Even more bizarre is Caperci's yellow ex myrtilloides. I can see the odd white appearing but the white on the trade was a dirty white as best as I remember, it parted company rather quickly.

Jens - This might be one to self next Spring for this ravenous lot. It would be interesting to see what colour emerges.
Went through the AGS Seed Lists back to 1987 for possible suspects:
1987 - #3060 - brachyanthum v hypolepidotum
1987 - #3062 - campylogynum
1987 - #3063 - campylogynum
1987 - #3064 - campylogynum v myrtilloides
1988 - #3141 - campylogynum
1988 - #3142 - campylogynum v album
1989 - #3194 - campylogynum
1990 - #3219 - brachyanthum v hypolepidotum
1991 - #3195 - campylogynum
1992 - #3227 - campylogynum
Nothing on the ACE (AGS China Expedition List) that has since been identified. Were there not a lot of ACE unkown lepidote species collected? Anyone?
Maybe others have previous lists.
Here are 3 shots of a campylogynum called Apricot from somewhere on the internet back in 2001. Jens was this the AGS Danish Chapter photo I emailed you that sent you on the quest to find it? The Danish AGS site photos seem to have disappeared and the site may be under construction ???
johnw - brrrr......

Is this the Danish site you are looking for?

Although no Apricot campylogynum

No John
not any of these tree!
I lots that one when my HD chrascheddddd!
The one that made me take contact to the AGS member.
The Yellow one grows a little less than the wellknown "Claret" from Cox.
Here a shot of what happen when crossing two former varieties of campylogynum
(You still have a true species, as all var. now are just "plain" Rh. campylogynum)

John, looking through the field notes from ACE (only 14 years ago) about 20 Rhododendron collections were made, most but not all were identified in the field. These included two seed collections of Rhododendron campylogynum - ACE 1481 (coll Bei Ma Shan, south side of road, leaves glossy green, shrub to 30cm) and ACE 2499 (coll Cangshan Mts above television, evergreen shrub to 20cm).
WELCOME to the forum Jens.

All the ACE rhodo seed we got were bigger types.......still good, mind, but not the Campylogynum :'(
-
Diane C. - It was the Alpine Garden Society, Danish Chapter website. Got it working www.agsdanmark.dk (http://www.agsdanmark.dk)
This shot is under Fotoarchiv. and is the same cross previously mentioned by Diane W. Photo by Frank Thorsgaard, Esbjerg on the Danish site but am sure no such parentage was listed on Jens' plant. Spot the Shortia?
Rob - My guess is if the original owner was a serious rhodophile he/she would most likely have ordered cw seed. Thanks for the research. Nice shot of your pots on the site.
Is the ACE list online, the hard copy is long gone. I only have the list of species named later.

Thanks for all Your efforts.
So most likely
(campylogynum x cremastum)
= true Rh. campylogynum !
acording to the classification.

Jens - Was Frank the owner who you visited in Denmark?

John i have paper copies of the field notes. It would be a time consuming task to copy them for you but can look up anything you or anyone else needs from them.
-
Rob - I was putting away the old AGS seed lists file folder when the ACE Field notes fell out. Thanks for the offer. I also have the Japan expedition notes as well.
Lots of great bulbs here from your nursery back in the mid 1990's.
johnw - low last night -5c, -3c now. Cold tonight, most of the continent is gripped in this.

Have been incontact with Frank T. He confirmed (campylogynum x cremastum). I cant recall to have been given the name, hence my Q. Might have forgotten the name in the execitement of this little wonder!
Still looking good with some flowerbuds for 09.
In the sunny weather to day , I have accesed my campylogynums . The Yellow one look just like a tru campylogynum - but one thing puzzel me: The foliage have some of the nasty smell of brachyanthum !!!! And do have some resemblance to my 25yrs old hybrid
Tessa Dane (campylogynum x brachyanthum v. hypolepidotum). But I will stick to name (campylogynum x cremastum).

Just as we are talking about Rhododendron campylogynum, I see in the AGS bulletin, (which is just arrived, so I've only got as far as leafing through to see the pictures!!) a plant which looks to me to be just that.... though it is captioned as being Rhododendron pumilum ::) pic is on page 490
An aside...
I think I'll be reading the article on Estonia from Forumists Shelagh and Brian Smethurst first, then the one by John Richards...... wonder how other folks prioritise their reading? I suppose some folks just start at the beginning!!
My Father used to start with a final article and work forward :P On the other hand, once Ian discovers the bulletin has arrived, it could be weeks before I get near it. :(
-
Maggi,
You just might want to check page 390 first.... ;D ;)

I look at the photos first, then look for articles of interest and then, sadly, it probably wont be opened again
