Title: 2008 YES!!! The "I'm so happy" thread
Post by: Martin Baxendale on November 05, 2008, 03:52:03 PM
As an antidote to the Moan, Moan, Moan thread, I thought we could also do with a thread for people to share and applaud good news and stuff that might generally cheer everyone up a bit. Let everyone know if something great has happened, congratulate someone on an achievement, etc. Maybe share a good joke you've heard. Yes I know this thread won't get used as much as the moaning thread, but it's here if you do need it.

I'll kick off with a big "Yay!" for the new President Elect of the United States of America. He's got a tough job on his hands clearing up after the incumbent. And as we prepare to say goodbye and good riddance to George W, one of my favourite Bushisms: "The trouble with the French is they don't have a word for 'entrepreneur' "

Paddy, that bloke (?) is jumping to conclusions somewhat. It could have been a McCain supporter wanting it for his garden? At least now the old codger can get back to running his 'oven chip' company in peace.

Cheyney mooched into a meeting in the oval office and remarked to Bush "Three Brazilians were killed in Iraq this morning." Bush collapsed onto his desk, quivering and shaking, turning white as a sheet.

After a time he seemed to pull himself together, raised his head and said to Cheyney "Remind me, just how many IS a brazillion?"

Nope, I don't think anyone misunderestimated him!

Obama backwards is "amabo" which is "I will love". That gives you amabo Obama.

Love that new word, Anthony ... 'misunderestimated' ... I think I married her!

...and did you notice that the words; 'amabo obama' could read; 'I'm a boob am I', if spoken with a Glasgow accent?   :)

Not my opinion, just an observation.

And as we prepare to say goodbye and good riddance to George W, one of my favourite Bushisms: "The trouble with the French is they don't have a word for 'entrepreneur' "

In a year's time we will be playing sad laments for Bush and his (un)intended homour as we endure the alien PC speak of O'Bama ("..disabled and non-disabled Americans..we are and always will be the United States of America"). As Virginia Woolf once said, "Humour is the first of the gifts to perish in a foreign tongue".

Today in the UK is a big fundraising day for the Children in Need charity whose mascot is a bear - to support them I've organised my work colleagues to bring in home made cakes to sell, and run a competition to match the right owner to the picture of their bear. So, for those of you who can't be here, a picture of some of the cakes . ;D ;D

It may prosaicly be about mere logs, but it may be about bringing in a decorated tree for the winter solstice for the added warmth of communion and fellowship - who knows.... the thoughts make me happy.

It's perishing here, as usual... the idea of the warmth giving logs is deeply attractive!
Fo some reason, I read Frazer's post and burst into song.... God King Wenceslas...... don't panic, folks, it's passed now..... silence reigns again  ;D

Sorry, Cliff, I was chewing a toffee at the time... it made my words come out strangely!

There's nothing about having a pot of smother one's worms that would make anyone happy, Lesley  :-X ;D

Nothing to do with plants, but I'm so happy I don't have dirty water from our bathroom flooding through the back wall into the void under our floorboards any more!

A so-called expert failed to come back after realizing on the first day that it wasn't just a simple drain rodding exercise, proving unable to decide exactly what the trouble was and discovering that it might actually involve some work; so I've just spent the last three days lifting floorboards, chiselling through concrete and stone, shoving my arms down holes and up drains, repeatedly getting stuck and using up my entire vocabulary of expletives, to find and fix the leak.

Now I just have to wait for the electric people to come and put insulating sheaths on the overhead power lines by the side wall so I can get a ladder up and fix the hole in the roof. Only been waiting a month now. First they failed to turn up on the agreed day, then arrived unexpectedly when I wasn't here and went away again even though I'd told them where I wanted the sheaths and it was bloody obvious. Now I've been promised a visit on Friday. We'll see. Maybe I'm on a winning streak this week.

Ever had anything to do with pregnant cows Martin? ;D

I'm so happy too. We've had some rain - not enough but more is forecast for later today - we didn't lose the first test against the Windies, and the day outside is mild and still and humid, the air filled with the scent of roses and honeysuckle which is odd as I have only a couple of roses, neither very scented but there are a hundred or more in the garden across the road.

Oh yes, sorry 'bout that one. Perhaps the security concerns should have been given greater weight and the tour cancelled.

I'll join Lesley in the happy about rain comments.... we had 72mm here last Friday/Saturday.  The 24 hours to 9am on Saturday was 63mm, the largest 24 hour event in the 2 1/2 years since my computer harddrive last died and I lost the records before that.  Has made virtually no difference to the dam levels for our water supply though.... the ground just drank it up as it was good slow rain the whole time.  Nice to actually see water seeping out of the ground in places at the moment around the city, something it has been a very long time since we've seen.  Here's hoping that the bit of rain they're forecasting tomorrow does actually eventuate, as it would be great followup.

last Thursday I ordered by post three American hollies, Ilex verticillata from Junkers nursery in Somerset and this morning they arrived. They specialise in trees and shrubs.

Beautiful plants wonderfully packed and excellent service. An example to others in these days of continuous complaints about service.

Now all I need do is grow them and get them covered in berries.

An excellent nursery, with excellent service, I deal with them all a lot.

You have to go on a waiting list for some of them.

Well, I know, I was surprised too..... most of us are managing a roast chicken at this time of year........ ::)

Actually, we too have noticed a marked reduction in the spam mail meantime..... for the last ten days or so it has been much less.....overzealous filter still managing to scoop up some wanted mail, though, while letting the odd piece of spam through, but penny numbers as opposed to the usual amounts.

I've noticed a great reduction in the number of spams from pseudobanks.  Maybe they've gone under too?
