Title: Allium atroviolaceum Boiss
Post by: Brian Ellis on June 22, 2008, 12:32:46 PM
Hello folks,
I'm looking for bulb/bulbil/seeds of Allium atroviolaceum, having googled like mad I don't seem to be getting anywhere.  Does anyone have an idea of where I can obtain it please?

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

Your RHS Plant Finder (in print and on line) lists a couple of places at least (Essex and Cambridgeshire I think) that carry A. atroviolaceum.

Try this site www.mnogoletnik.narod.ru but I'm afraid it's in Russian. A. atroviolaceum is available there and the seller is reliable, who knows species from the Caucasus well.

Brian, if you find it difficult, some tips. On the home page of the site click the first big blue lettered line with 2008 for the seed catalogue, the third line of the same type for the bulb catalogue. if you click one of the short blue lines with words Луки Кавказа you'll see pix of alliums from the Caucasus

... but having judged today at the Royal Norfolk Show I find that my companion judge, Richard Hobbs, will let me have some bulbs.  Thank you to all who took the trouble to answer this thread or PM me. ;)

A show.... on a Wednesday? :o  Fancy that! Was the weather good... it's been raining pretty much all day here in Aberdeen  :(

Yes Maggie, on Wednesday and on Thursday too.  Held in conjunction with the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association, it's what used to be called our Rose Show, and some fine ones were on display too.  The weather was generally very warm which was good for the crowds which turned out for the opening day... may have been something to do with Prince Harry carrying on the tradition of a Royal appearing on the first day!  The only drawback as far as we were concerned was having to be there by 7 am to start judging :o
