So sorry to hear about Bette. She was always so welcoming when Susan and I attended the discussion weekends.

I offer you a poem by Norman MacCaig. Only the gender has been changed for the maist couthie girl who's gone.

She went through a company like a lamplighter –
see the dull minds, one after another,
begin to glow, to shed
a beneficent light.

She went through a company like
a knifegrinder – see the dull minds
scattering sparks of themselves,
becoming razory, becoming useful.

She went through a company
as herself. But now she’s one
of the multitudinous company of the dead
where are no individuals.

The beneficent lights dim
but don’t vanish. The razory edges
dull, but still cut. She’s gone: but you can see
her tracks still, in the snow of the world.

So sorry to hear about Bette's passing. Brian and I always enjoyed some banter with her at Discussion Weekends or at Shows.

Bette’s death leaves a huge hole in the SRGC. Her advice on Club matters was given after much deliberation and careful thought. She guided our council deliberations gently but firmly. Several presidents consulted her on important matters. Socially she was vibrant and encouraging. Our club was fortunate to have had Bette as Honorary President.
We all have our fond memories of our friendship with Bette and her infectious smile. She and Bill encouraged me to give my first talk to an SRGC meeting....in Ayr, in a high school. Half way through my talk in a stuffy room one elderly lady fainted and had to be carried out and laid down on a bench in the science lab. Someone stayed with her while Bette and Bill got everyone else seated and with the lights out I was instructed to “carry on!”
I will miss her.

The following tribute just received from Pat Watson:

"I have known Bette for over 50 years, since she and Bill revived the Ayrshire Group.  In fact, if it hadn't been for Bette and Bill, there would be no Ayrshire Group.  Over the years I enjoyed many garden visits, events and mountain holidays in her company, and consider her to have given her alll to the SRGC.  She was always supportive, generous with her knowledge, and a lovely friend.  I will miss her."
